My throat went dry when Elena's phone stopped ringing. The voice machine said that they couldn't reach the number.
That nagging feeling at the back of my mind began to take an ugly shape as I drove as fast as I could. I didn't care about the corners or the streets filled with pedestrians.
All I cared about was the woman with burgundy hair and honey-coloured eyes who had wormed her way into my life without her knowing.
As soon as her house came into view, I began to breathe again. Only a few seconds, I told myself and wished that I would find her there.
I parked my car on the roadside before jumping out of it. I barely recalled locking it before racing to the small white gate. I noticed her car standing in the driveway, and relief budded in my chest. I raced up the stairs and knocked on the door, but to my surprise, it was open.
I pushed it and entered the house, only to lose whatever little relief I felt. The whole place was ruined as if a hurricane had hit it.
