Uche smiled when Nick left.
"What?" I asked him.
"Nothing. It's just funny cos his mum wants him to babysit you, Nick doesn't want that."
"I don't need babysitting, I can take care of myself." I said.
"Tell his mum that." He smiled, his hands weren't in his pocket today, he still wore the shirt he had changed into.
Did my aunt really think that I needed that much help? I know I couldn't cook but I could make scrambled eggs, if the were eggs in that kitchen earlier this afternoon, I would have made some eggs.
"Can you carry two?" He asked holding up one of the bags.
"Yes, do I look like I can't?" I asked and took it from him and even though it was surprisingly heavier that it seems when he was holding it.
I looked inside it, it was canned food and ingredients, explained why they where heavy. I carried it, hugging one of the bags and holding the other with my two hands. I already said yes, now I had to carry it. I didn't want him to think I was like those girls who couldn't carry heavy stuff.
I was almost at the door when one of the nylons tore open and all it's contents fell on the ground.
Shit.
I dropped the other nylon on the porch and kneeled to start picking up the fallen things. Uche came to where I knelt and started picking some of the tins for me.
He picked up the torn nylon bag and try to make it possible to still put things in it. After putting the things he had picked, he held the bag open, so I could put mine.
"It won't fall out?" I had to ask him, it was already embarrassing that I let it happen, I didn't want it repeated.
"It won't." He shook his head. I put the cans inside it and he handed the bag over to me. He also picked up the good bag I kept there and gave it to me.
"What happened?" Nick asked standing at the door.
Uche didn't say anything and I didn't feel like explaining that I just embarrassed myself, so I didn't anything either.
Nick continued towards the car, but when he left he closed the door. I sighed knowing I couldn't open the door with my two hands occupied.
I made to look at Uche to help out but he was already at it, he opened the door and held it so I could go in. Carrying bags from the car was harder to do today for some reason.
"How are you Uche?" My aunt asked loudly from the kitchen. She could see him, because the kitchen didn't have any blockage from the living room.
The living room was as part of the kitchen as the dinning table was, it was just separated by spaces one could pass through and wall designs that indicated that they were separate rooms, I wondered if Uche's house was the same.
"I'm good aunt." He replied.
"And your dad? I don't see him often, lately."
"He's good too."
"Tell him I asked about him, maybe we could come over for dinner sometime. One of these weekends maybe." My aunt said and he just nodded.
I kept the bags on the dinning table, where I saw Nick had kept the ones he carried. I didn't know what my aunt was cooking but It smelt really nice. I took a cup and got water from the water dispenser.
When I was about to drop the cup back on the table, I saw that Uche was still standing there; at the door. Was he waiting for me? Nick came back with three bags again, dropped it and left. Uche didn't go out with him, he was waiting for me.I went to the door, he was smiling.
"What?" I asked.
"You are tired, just from carrying two of the bags?" He talked while still smiling.
"Nooo, I was thirsty before now." I replied, laughing.
"I think Nick's done with all the bags." He said when I wanted to walk past him at the door to go outside.
Nick was walking towards us now with the last set of bags. I moved out of the way for him to pass through.
"Thanks for helping Julie!" Nick said in a tone which sounded pretty sarcastic.
"You are welcome." Uche laughed when I gave a sarcastic reply but it turned into a smile when Nick dropped the bags and looked at him.
"Right, you don't need babysitting?" Uche said.
"Today's different, okay, I used to help my mum at her job, she worked at this supermarket and she delivered goods to people, I used to carry all of that for her."
"Okay okay." He was smiling all the while." But it's cute though."
"What is? Not being able to carry stuff?"
"No, being clumsy while you carry stuff."
"No, it's not, it's weak." I said my mind to him.
"You are staying for dinner right?" My aunt asked Uche from the kitchen.
"Uhm....yeah." Uche nodded.
"Quit talking to her and please come help me set the table man." Nick said placing the tablecloths on the table in front of the chairs.
"You are cute, there, I said it." Uche said and walked past me to go help Nick.
I stood there, at that spot for a good while. What did he just say? He just called me cute! I was screaming happily but inside my mind, no one could hear it, just me, I wanted to explode.
Sure, I have been called cute by other boys, lots of other boys actually, but this was different. I felt something in my stomach, it was like I wanted to throw up but it felt good. I don't know why, maybe it was because I didn't sense that perversion in his words when he said it.
I looked at the dinning table, Uche wasn't even doing anything there, he was just standing by Nick and talking with him, while Nick set the table himself. It was almost like Nick just wanted him to stop talking to me.
