Chapter 13 - Thirteen

"Or you just wanted to show off?" He winked jokingly and I smiled.

"Wait... showoff? No." I disagreed, still smiling.

"So you really wrote to test yourself?"

"Yeah, if you are bad at math, you would wanna test yourself." I said looking down at the ground as I walked, I didn't like that math wasn't a good subject for me.

"I get." I looked at him when he said that and he was smiling again.

"So did you know?"

"About what?"

"The test."

"Oh, yeah I did, I was the one who told everyone."

"Really? How did you know?" I looked at him to get his reaction as he answered.

"I figured, wasn't sure though, but he always gives his impromptu tests on the first or last Friday of every month." He said making air quotes as he mentioned 'Impromptu.'

I thought he looked pretty smart, he was smart, I just hoped he wasn't too smart to hang out with me.

"How did you tell everyone and when?"

"Last night...well this morning, around one, I'm not sure." Then he paused. "Why aren't you active in our class group?"

"No one is active there, just parents and teachers, did you send it there? won't Mr Ralph see it?" I asked seriously concerned.

He laughed at my question, which I didn't find funny in any way. He stopped when he noticed I wasn't laughing too.

"Not that group, the students only group, I sent it there."

"There's a student only group?"

"Yes, just our classmates. Wait, have you been added to the group?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"..."

"I would ask Kim to add you." He said, stopping my words.

"He's the admin?"

"He started the group." Uche simply explained.

"Oh." I said. "I don't want to be added then." He looked at me with a why face.

"You don't want to be added? The group is really fun."

"I don't have a reason, or maybe it's because you just told me Kim runs the group."

"What? You don't like Kim?"

"I didn't say that." I didn't like Kim but I wasn't going to say it, not to his friend whom I liked; a lot.

"Come on, tell me."

"Well, I don't want to have to give him my number, he needs it to add me right?"

"Yeah he does and you don't need to be the one to give it to him, he can ask Nick for it."

"Nick wouldn't dare give anyone my number without my knowledge."

He laughed again.

"You do know Kim's not just anyone right?"

"Exactly, he's too popular here, I don't even know why he is this popular."

"So that's why you don't like him?" He smiled, he seemed to be okay with me not liking his friend and I was glad about that.

"You are pretty popular too." I shrugged letting him know that was not my reason to dislike Kim. "You could ask him to make you an admin too, then you can add me, I would give you my number." I said hoping he would take out his phone right now to take my phone number.

"I already have your number." He said to my surprise.

"You do?" I watched him readjust the arm of his bag which he hung on his right shoulder as I walked by his left now.

"I texted you, you didn't reply." He said again without a readable expression.

We were now at our block, I could remember the flower bushes planted uniformly in front of every house.

"When did you text? I didn't get it." I asked, trying to remember getting a text.

"last night." He looked at me while talking."You can check later." He must have observed how confused I was about his text right now to say that.

I couldn't believe I got a text from him and didn't know. I have been looking for ways to get to be with him or talk with him, without looking like a clinger of some sort and I missed his direct message. Was that why he seemed a little hesitant to talk to me this morning?

"Sorry I didn't reply." I thought I should say, now I knew he probably thought I didn't want to talk to him.

"No, it's my fault, what was i thinking?" He chuckled." I took your number from Nick's phone and sent you a dm, I should have just asked you for it." He stopped, we had gotten to my aunt's house.

"You shouldn't apologize for not replying a message from an unknown number, so yeah, my fault." He put his hands in his pockets now that we weren't walking anymore. We just stood in front of the house.

"So ask me for it now." I said in a low voice, biting my lower lips to beat my nervousness.

"What?"

"You can ask for my number now, officially." I repeated myself, louder this time. He smiled.

"Uhm, Can I have your number?" He asked, his eyes on my lips.

I stopped biting my lip, to get his attention back from looking at it, knowing how red it would have become. I swallowed, hoping my breathing wasn't as loud as I could hear them.

"What was that? Is that how you ask girls for their number? Oh I forgot, you don't ask them, you just steal their numbers and text them." I joked and he scratched the back of his neck, smiling.

"Let's be clear, I've only done that with you " He had a short laugh which I thought sounded quite sheepish.

"Why? Is it because I have a cousin you can steal my number from?"

"I guess."

"So what if I were to be like, a random person, non-related to Nick?"

"I would ask you for it."

"Then why didn't you?"

"...." He went quiet for a while."I thought you wouldn't give it to me."

"Why on earth wouldn't I? I mean you are big in our school, like Nick."

"I don't know, you don't talk to anyone in class, except Casey and Nick....."

"And you." I added and he looked at me."I talk to you too."

"Just today, we don't even talk in school?"

"Well, you are either with Nick or some other friend, sooo...." I said tucking my hands in my jeans' back pocket, I needed to do something with my hands since I couldn't bite my lips.
