Chapter 16 - Read

Ariella pov

"Read the paragraph." His demanding voice had me jump alittle. A tear fell from my eye as I realized I messed up.

"Okay." I whispered. I needed to wipe my tears but I was too nervous. Before I could ponder on what to do the book was taken out my hands.

I quickly wiped my eyes and looked over to the high king looking at my book. "Where did you start?" He asked in a little less hostile voice. I knew I was understanding it wrong but I still tried my best. Actually none of it made sense but I wouldn't voice my opinion. It was like a book of riddles and if he created this I definitely didn't want to offend him.

I slowly stepped over and looked down at the book. My senses were assaulted by him instantly. His fresh spice smell was taking over my mind and my leg brushing up against him had my pulse quickening.

I knew everyone was looking at me, so I tried to clear my mind of him but every time he moved just alittle his thigh brushed up against mine. Warmth spread through my leg and it took every bit of self control I had to fight the urge to lean more into him.

"Ummm. Right here." I whispered as I pointed to the start of the first paragraph. He disregarded my presence and looked at it for a second before he was turning the book towards me.

"Here read it." He ordered me. His voice wasnt nice but I still couldn't help but glance at his face. He was looking at me with a sense of disinterest. I didn't mean the frown to form but it did. He was the high king and I bet I was wasting his time.

A clearing of a throat had me jumping. Why did I keep staring at him? I snatched the book and turned away fast. My hair hit my face and I had to move it while holding my book with one hand.

I hurried up and found my place in the book and tried my best not to think about the presence that was next to me.

"The law requires you to keep the secrets deep. The law refuses you to keep a copy of this map, the map that shows the realm that holds all portals that lead beyond this universe you see. Never tell a living soul where this map truly leads." I read the first passage and finished with a cringe.

I looked at the map that was a whole bunch of lines and number and than the multiple warnings to never show or tell a soul.

"What kind of map is this and why do you say don't read this out loud before every passage?" I asked as I looked over at King Alexander who was now looking at the class instead of paying attention to me. Did I do something wrong?

"Well I wasn't the one who wrote the book. My closest Ally was. I think it would be best if we ask him." King Alexander said as he snapped his fingers.

Within an instance the same God from the first day was teleporting in. "You needed me?" Zavier The God of the future asked as he looked around the class.

"Yes Ms. Ariella is wondering why you worded the book the way you did." King Alexander stated. Zavier looked at me and then my book with a weird Expression on his face. Why did he seem curious?

"Well this was back when you would imprison anyone who didn't remember a law. As I recall you made it illegal to read any of the laws you created out loud because of that reason alone." Zavier explained.

I paled from his explanation. They imprisoned anyone who didn't remember a law. "That law is still active to. Speaking the laws out loud is okay but if the king asks someone to recite a law and you try to help them out, that will get you imprisoned." Zavier explained causing me to pale more.

"I don't understand any of the laws." I blurted. I took a step back as I realized I just made a outburst in front of the king and I admitted to not understanding the laws.

King Alexander chuckled low and deep. His smile had my fear going away without a goodbye. "That's what this class is for." He said as he stood tall and took the few steps to get to me.

"As long as you work to learn and understand my laws, you'll be fine." He said as he grabbed my chin and lifted my face up towards him.

My heart started to race with how close we were. His fingers touching me had a comforting feeling consume me. It was like it was only us.

"Don't read that book outloud outside of this class unless you are working on it with a fellow classmate. Don't make me have to punish you for breaking the law." King Alexander said as he rubbed my cheek with his finger.

"I ummm I won't." I stuttered. King Alexander rubbed my cheek with his soft fingers one last time before he was dropping my face and walking away. It took alot to cover up the disappointment.

"Why, ummm, why do you have dozens of maps in this book?" I rushed out before I forgot to ask.

King Alexander stopped at his desk and eyed me with eyes that were as black as night. He was angry. Was I over stepping?

"So I can catch the untrustworthy." King Alexander said as he sat down at his desk. He didn't look up at me again, so I hurried up and went to my seat.

"Maybe you should ask him to help you understand instead of insulting his work." Alax said as he pulled up a chair.

Insulting his work? Did I just insult the king. "I wouldn't be surprised if you ended up missing when I came to your room." Blake joked. Both of them laughed like it was the funniest thing in the world. All while I was panicking.

One look at king Alexander told me that it could happen. He was going through the book with so much aggression, that I was suprised he didn't rip any pages out.
