Chapter 82 - Good Assist

There were some areas that Brick already been aware of that were proceeding as they were supposed to while there were some areas that were outside of his predictions.

Despite the ongoing events happening further away, he remained focussed on the current task at hand.

The cars navigated through the roads that had changed a little ever since the time they had been passed through.

Some roads had abandoned cars or ominous signs of there being a recent death or accident nearby.

The detours took those driving off in other directions at times so the journey took longer than planned.

The zombies were not always the biggest threat at times since desperation often made others take cruel paths in order to survive.

It would not be strange for there to be some people looking to use whatever opportunities presented before them to try to escape to another place they believed to be safer even if it meant pulling others from their cars and putting others in danger.

Looting stores became something that was normal during such times but there were always those that took more drastic actions as they chose to take advantage of others.

Despite the growing chaotic world, there were some places that had managed to maintain some semblance of law and order.

Unfortunately those places had yet to handle their own problems and had yet to develop or adapt enough to the current world.

Rescue efforts were still something they were unable to put any plans towards.

Anyone with enough power was much too busy trying to maintain their current standing and looking out for the people that were in their inner circle or held enough power to help the current situation.

Politicians were busy making grabs for power and achievements at the cost of more lives while others were trying to pull those down who were proving to be unhelpful towards the preservation of humankind.

The military was a place with a strict hierarchy and where orders were absolute so they were often at the mercy of those in higher positions to carry out rescue missions and collection missions.

Some tasks were to retrieve high priority targets, secure supplies, maintain order and to help to secure a safe place of operations.

Most cities that had a military presence went along with orders risking their lives despite their recent losses but not everyone was the same.

Some areas had already begun to declare martial law resulting in the military seizing control over the surroundings area along with the citizens and taking power from others believing it was something they needed to do in order to reduce the deaths that were stacking up.

So many places were overrun with zombies or were experiencing great difficulties yet there was one place that seemed to not look too bad.

Several cars drove in a line down a road that had few zombies wandering around.

The walls around the area were quite high so they were able to keep zombies out but it was not the same for humans.

It looked like it would be safe to hold up in during the outbreak but Brick who was sitting in the front car looked towards the walls thoughtfully. 'This is no good.. this place is no good in the long term.'

As the cars were approaching closer to the blockade he set up, Brick waited for the car to come to a halt before stepping outside.

The car door pushed open causing a nearby zombie that approached to be pushed back. "Uuuh."

The zombie was only the size of a small child so it was knocked down from the blunt force with ease allowing Brick to get to it before it recovered from the fall.

His foot pressed down on its side pushing it onto its front exposing the back of its head.

Brick then reached down to grab a handful of its hair to pull the head back a little before stabbing a knife into its eye socket. "This is getting too easy.. but it is still not good enough."

He had taken on several zombies in close quarters already so he was being more careful not to make mistakes while finishing them off as quickly and efficiently as possible.

There were always times when he scolded himself for placing his hands of feet somewhere unnecessary that could be within the reach of the zombies hands.

A bite was something to avoid but so was a scratch or anything else that broke the skin allowing the virus to get into the body.

All it took was one zombie thrashing around during its final moments for there to be a small infected scratch to take place.

There may have been less of a chance of being infected since he had begun to evolve but the risk was always there.

Zombies would evolve and were currently evolving increasing the overall threat to humans to the point that evolved zombies would have a much stronger virus that could infect humans who had yet to develop their own evolved abilities to stage one.

Those who evolved gaining a small power gained a small immunity to ordinary zombies but that did not make them invulnerable.

They still underwent a high fever and the usual symptoms on a smaller scale that they could survive.

The amount of the virus of that level had a big impact on the severity of their symptoms too.

If they were bitten and scratched enough to be highly infected with the virus beyond their resistance then they were certain to turn into a zombie too.

If bitten or scratched by a higher level evolved zombie than their own power then their chances of surviving were practically none existent.

There would be some people that would think they were completely immune after surviving a bite but then one day they would encounter a larger group of zombies or a higher level zombie causing their death and becoming a zombie themselves.

Brick knew that and also knew that he still needed to increase his experience and get used to his body well enough to handle such threats.

Even if he had his barrier powers, there would be a limit to how much he could do if he just stayed on the back lines.

If he was pushed to the back to provide support to others then he would soon lose any kind of place for himself.

It was not that supports were useless but that many groups tended to neglect those with less destructive powers.

People usually would follow those that were strong and inspired them to move forward.

His abilities were the type that most would see as something that needed their protection to hide in the back while others do the difficult work.

It would not be long before he would be seen as no longer being needed by some even if he was doing many things in the background to save many lives.

In order not to fall into such a situation, Brick had already decided not to neglect his fighting experience while trying to make a balance between close range combat and the use of his barriers.

Just as he finished killing the small zombie, the top of the car opened up allowing for someone to climb through.

Tanya had her upper body sticking out of the top of the car as she pulled out the new bow and placed an arrow on it.

She pulled the string before letting the arrow fly towards another zombie that was approaching causing the arrow to pierce through its neck. "Tsk.."

Another one was drawn a moment later with not that much of a delay before the arrow pierced through the side of the head of the zombie that had fallen over with an arrow in its neck.

A small spread out group of zombies moved forward as Brick readied his axe in one hand and a knife in the other. "Good assist."
