Chapter 70 - Onward

Brick was able to get away before the road had been filled with much more zombies so he was a little relieved upon entering the parking lot.

That relief was washed away as he peered back towards the road which was beginning to gain more obstructions on it. 'This… all that hard work gone to waste! Shall I just go back and kill who was behind this? Nah.. too risky. That is just like playing with fire right now.'

He wanted revenge but his rational side won over in the end.

Brick knew that letting his emotions get the best of himself was never going to end well.

He already managed to hold himself back from firing his gun towards the upper floors where he had seen some figures appearing briefly as they dropped different things down. 'Just get back at them later if they are still alive long enough for me to cross paths with me again.'

Brick knew that staying around and not coming up with a plan would only cause further problems down the line so he moved forward as he lead others up to the higher floors walking cautiously up the ramps.

Each time he passed one or the cars that he knew others were inside of, he tapped on the window to signal for them to follow up higher.

The reason was so all the cars could be brought together and be able to move together while sorting out who intended to leave and stick around.

It was better to organise such things from the top floor where he had to meet up with Homer who had been waiting.

The first engine of a car started as it began to move up to the next floor and then it was followed by more that were picked up along the way.

Just the noise created by the cars starting up and driving could be enough to attract the zombies especially if they were gathering very close in a larger number so Brick felt very rushed for time as he increased his pace.

Luckily the upper floors of the parking lot were not as crowded with zombies as the lower floors due to the newer zombies entering not making their way up that high so the journey started to become much smoother.

As Brick looked over towards the street below, he saw the crowd of zombies gathering in a much larger number which was worrying for him.

He noticed that the attempts from the people inside the hotel had stopped once Brick and others had gotten to safety.

Another thing he noticed was that there were more zombies that gathered near the entrance and main hall of the ground floor of the hotel.

Since the noise mainly came from that direction to draw them in, most of the zombies had gathered on that side of the room while others filtered out in different directions.

Some others had moved back towards the back of the hotel again due to there being a much larger crowd of zombies who had continued to bump into cars and make more disturbances.

It caused Brick to be a little relieved that his plan had helped to lessen the burden some more while another thought crossed his mind. 'Hmm.. now that I think about it, did they remember to lock and barricade that door?'

There was some concern for the innocent people inside that could fall victim to the zombies that were attracted towards the hotel while he did have some fantasies pop up in his mind from time to time about the zombies going after those that had tried to mess with him.

Unfortunately reality and his knowledge gained from novels often proved that it was usually the innocents that were always the ones so suffer first before the villains ever got some kind of karma coming their way.

Despite their bad deeds and how much they tried to cause problems everywhere, they never suffered any losses until the time came when the protagonist of the story came across them.

Such characters were usually built up to make the protagonist look good and to let them play hero a little or to simply get some satisfying revenge and face slapping scenes.

Brick continued to think to himself. 'Hmm.. no doubt about it. It is that guy who was behind it all. Barnes family was it? I will remember it! But.. there is one thing I cannot help but wonder now.

WHO THE HELL IS NOW THE PROTAGONIST!? This world should have had Lucy as the protagonist on her journey to power and to take revenge. Now those events should slowly be playing out but now my involvement will only spark more change.

Am I the protagonist now or still a side character in this world? What about Tanya? Is she still set for ruin and a path of a villain or is she this world's protagonist? Or maybe it is one of those I have helped out?

He couldn't help but question such things and who the world revolved around since it was a world of a novel he was in.

Brick was still unsure how much of an impact he could have on the future of the story and if it would be him to successfully live long enough to be worthy of a protagonist's status in the world.

He was lacking in confidence in himself since anything could happen along the way but he did have enough knowledge to assist him to have a good chance to be more successful.

One of main concerns was that he had to deal with the position as a side character and bodyguard to Tanya which he could not just leave behind to go off and do as he pleased.

It was something that would hold him back one day and would restrict his movements and actions if he did not handle certain events well enough.

He put those thoughts aside and sighed. 'It would be best to focus on survival for now.'

He jumped inside the next closest car that had responded to the sets of keys he collected as he sat on the passenger seat. "Onward!"

The car started and joined with the other cars heading to the top floor until the destination had been reached.

He stepped outside and walked towards a familiar car before tapping on the window. "Open up."
