Chapter 7 - Preparations

Brick put on dark overalls which went over his clothing then added a pair of gloves after he had locked the door behind himself. "Time to get to work. More disgusting jobs for me.. yay.."

The sarcasm in his voice was very strong as he began digging out the crystal nucleus out of the heads of the zombies then placed them in a small jar to the side.

After moving the bodies to the side and bringing the carpet full of the puppy corpses nearby, he started to cut into the bodies around the stomach areas and began to pull out the internal organs. "Endure.. must endure."

There were many times that he almost vomited again but it seemed as if he had built up a tiny bit more endurance compared to earlier.

The carpet was stained with black blood and internal organs which had been removed but then it was being wiped onto the overalls which covered Brick's body. "Ha.. this trick is useful but it would only really work on ordinary or less dangerous zombies. For now it will help me survive."

The strong smell of death and decaying flesh was coming from his body and he had a black lower face covering that covered his mouth and nose while the hood of the overalls were covering the neck and head of him.

He walked over towards the door and opened up the other doors within his house while placing his phone in one room and setting the alarm in another.

The door was opened while Brick stood behind it holding a sharpened wooden pole in one hand and an axe in the other while the dagger was attached to his waist.

He remained still after he threw a couple of metal spoons, forks and knives across the room which caused a couple of zombies to enter his home.

Brick made sure to be on guard in case his plan had failed to work but luck and the novels information had been on his side, the zombies entered and seemed to be unable to detect him.

They were much more interested in locating the source of the noises when there were more sounds which started within each of the rooms.

Two wandered into one room while two others split up to enter another while Brick silently closed the front door. 'Time to get to work.'

While the zombies were distracted and drawn away, Brick was able to closed the doors behind them before they could notice his presence because of the noises created by the alarms that had been set off.

Taking a little time to mentally prepare himself, Brick placed a lower wooden coffee table by the door and pushed the door open.

The axe was kept nearby within reach while he held the wooden staff ready to thrust it forward, a slight tap of the door hitting the wall as it was opened had alerted the zombie. "Hrrr."

Just as it was about to step forward, Brick thrust towards the head which landed on the lower half and missed the brain. 'I need to get used to attacking them when they have such stiff movements while jerking or swaying at times. It can be quite annoying.'

The zombie was triggered upon being attacked and started seeing Brick as an enemy or a threat to its life so it followed its natural instincts to attack.

It stepped forward and tripped over the small coffee table which exposed the back of the head to Brick so he did not waste the opportunity.

The tip of the staff was inserted into the skull and pushed in deeper until it stopped moving.

Brick made certain it was dead by stabbing it once more then moved it near the other pile of corpses. 'I wonder how the others are faring?'

He was not sure how everyone else in the novel world was coping with the zombie outbreak but he was certain that the more experienced female lead was probably busy with having similar experiences.

The main difference was that the female lead was more battle hardened and experienced while he was still new to everything.

He had the original body owners fighting experience and instincts which helped to overcome his inexperience but there was still the mental battle and other calculations he had to take into account too when dealing with the zombies.

Even with his disguise to hide him from the zombies senses, if he moved too quickly or made loud noises, he would become a target for the zombies so the tactics he used were not completely foolproof.

When he opened up the next door, the thrust was much more precise which entered through the eye socket and caused a quick death to it before the lower coffee table could be put to use.

From his experience he did feel more comfortable attacking from a ranged position since it was much safer but he was well aware of the need to build up close range combat experience in the future.

There would be times where he could be trapped or overrun by zombies and the only way to escape was to fight his way out so using a spear type weapon was not too reliable.

When in tight spaces or inside a building, there was less room to swing or thrust larger weapons around so they could lead to accidents more than they would be helpful in certain environments.

Out in the open, the spear was the best weapon to use since it allowed better reach and distance from the zombies but in more closed spaces it was better to rely on a smaller blade or axe/hatchet.

There were many that wrote novels which Brick had read which often went for larger machete/jungle knives and swords but they would have had to experience some setbacks in certain environments when swinging them about.

The final door opened and the spear tip was pierced into the first head but had become stuck so Brick was forced to release it and back off.

The staff was waving around with the movements and got in the way of the other zombie.

As the injured zombie fell over the low coffee table, the other end of the wooden staff made contact with the ground and wall.

The force which was created by the fall and the positioning of the wooden staff had caused it to be pushed deeper until it popped out of the other side of the head.

The head slowly slid down the wooden staff while the other zombie tried to push past it.

Brick had already retreated and gotten ahold of his axe and removed the knife from his waist.

The zombie fell over which allowed the back to be in a vulnerable position but Brick did not jump in right away as he got within range of the crawling zombie.

The knife pierced the hand and nailed it to the ground which was followed by another being pulled out from nearby which pinned the hands down.

Brick approached the zombie and then removed the bubblewrap which was bitten by the zombie once it found a target to bite.

The bubblewrap was wrapped and tied which was followed by some duct tape being applied around the mouth as he stood on the back of the zombie.

The axe in his hand was raised up and then came down onto the shoulder areas as he started hacking at them.

Once the arms had been removed, he moved onto cutting at the lower jaw until he felt it was safe to remove the protection.

After some time had passed, the lower jaw and teeth were removed which left a harmless zombie.

A collar was placed on its neck along with an extendable lead which was in Brick's hand which he had attached to the radiator.

He then went back to moving and harvesting the bodies, after reapplying some fresher zombie blood and organs, he opened the door holding the lead and gave a slight tug onto it which made the zombie follow.

While watching the movements, he slowly started to mimic them in an attempt to disguise himself among the dead.

Once a lesser zombie had lost its means of attacking or eating, they became more docile and could be used in such ways to help a person disguise among them.

The two most used methods for those that went scouting, gathering or often went from place to place were the two methods he was using.

Having a zombie by them helped to create an extra obstacle and target for any that shot first and asked questions later but it also helped to learn the habits of the zombies and their movements.

While moving among the hoards of zombies or trying to get through them, it was a good idea to keep a zombie of their own close by so they could create an extra countermeasure or help to further mask the human smell on their bodies.

Those that used such tactics would be put in danger because of people firing arrows or shooting bullets at zombies while heavy rainfall and other unpredictable situations could cause the smell to be washed away or attention to be drawn to them.

Not everyone was able to remain silent and act according to orders when taking on the dangers so it was expected that one person could cause the collapse of an entire group when they were using such methods to escape or make their way through an obstruction.

Using such a method of survival, Brick left his home for the first time since the zombie apocalypse had begun.
