Chapter 8 - Surrounded

At the entrance where Brick had previously gained entry to the household, the gate was slightly open and there were a couple of zombies lingering nearby.

Some were outside while the remains were wandering around the insides, they moved slowly in one direction randomly while a small amount moved as a group.

The hoarse groans and moans that came from their mouths would be heard by anyone close by.

One zombie was near the gate which blocked the way into the security office, it slowly wandered and passed by two other wandering figures.

One was wrapped up from head to toe while the other showed many signs of decay while its jaw and arms had been removed.

They passed by the zombie then when they were out of its range of its poor sight, something was pressed against the back of the neck of the zombie. "Bzzzt."

The zombie started to spasm a little before falling down, a knife entered the back of the skull which quickly caused it to no longer show any signs of moving.

Certain voltages of electricity were useful against humans and zombies to cause shock damage to the muscles while a shock near the spine or brain would be more deadly.

When disguised, Brick was able to get close enough and attack from behind.

The sound of the body falling down did not create a lot of noise to draw the attention of the others in the area.

Brick came to the security post and pressed on the handle which had been locked.

A look of annoyance was on his face as he went back over towards the body and started to search through the clothing.

The jingling of keys attracted a nearby zombie so he hurriedly inserted the key into the door and pushed the zombie that he had with him inside.

A zombie that was inside was alerted right away and was dressed in a similar security uniform. "Hrr."

The zombie that was pushed fell right into the other zombie which made them both fall to the ground which allowed Brick the time needed to enter and close the door behind himself.

He ran over towards his zombie and pushed his foot down onto it to keep its body weight onto the other zombie before leaning over to stab towards the face of the zombie.

A couple of stabs was all it took before it stopped moving then the rest of the room was completely safe for him.

There was some banging at the door from the zombie outside but the windows were barred and the door was very secure. "Hmm..rrr."

Bang, crash, bang.

Brick started to look over the live security footage while playing with the controls.

A flick of a switch had caused the gate to move which closed it securely.

The zombie was secured to the nearby pipes in the room while Brick continued to play around with the controls.

Several things were removed from his bag one after another then the chair was thrown towards the glass which shattered it after a couple of hits.

Brick held a device which was connected to the control panel and pressed a button while holding it up to his mouth. "Testing.. testing.. calling any living survivors on the outer area of the Reed residence. If you are not already safe inside, get to somewhere safe and hide for the time being. If you are not confident in your abilities to survive and avoid being bitten then do not add to the chaos."

The moment he started speaking, the device that was up on a pole had started to spread what he had said loudly in the area.

It created a chain reaction as the zombies inside the walls and outside headed towards the security post.

A face was pushed up against the bars of the window which were on the door of the security post as a zombie was trying to get to Brick.

The knife in his hand was positioned nearby and then pushed through the gap in the bars into the skull of zombie.

Once removed, it dropped down outside the door and more zombies were gathering near the door and the window.

The window was the area which had a small opening to pass some things through like identity cards or documents so a couple of zombies hands were able to fit through the larger gap.

The overall strength of the zombies were not much but when there was a large amount of them, they could cause windows or doors to become less of an obstruction unless they were very secure and strong.

The security post was designed to be very sturdy to prevent anyone from gaining entry to it unless they were a member of the security personnel.

Once locked, it would become a small fortress and there were shutters inside which helped protect those inside from gunfire from outside.

By the time that others had been alerted to the danger to those inside, those inside would be able to survive safely unless they had been shot without warning before the shutters went up.

While the security for the gate was very high, there were still some flaws to the security which allowed people to enter and exit freely when they climbed the walls in certain blind spots so the security of the Reed residence was not perfect.

If they were a high ranked family from the capital which had many enemies or competitors then there would be a need for a tighter security but the Reed family were not qualified to get involved with the political struggles of the capital.

A wealthy and influential family in one city could be seen as a peasant in the eyes of those from the capital where the buildings and rent prices along with other things were enormous.

Anyone that wished to enter the capital would not last long because the competition there was much fiercer and ruthless, most would be swallowed up by those already in power or would be bankrupted very quickly which would leave them retreating from the capital with less than they had than when they came.

The more unlucky ones became pawns for others or died mysteriously so no sane person would go there unless they could not control their greed for power, money and fame.

The hands were stretching inside of the security post while trying to grab onto Brick but he stood there silently which caused them to lose interest.

Just as there was an opening, the axe was swung down towards the closest arm and continued chopping until it was no longer attached.

He continued to chop at anything that managed to get through which caused a lot of the black blood and flesh to spread around near the window.

Since the arms were no longer a threat to him, Brick came to the door which had gathered many zombies and stabbed through the smaller openings in the small barred window on it.

With the experiences he was having, his overall accuracy started growing each time he attacked the zombies which allowed more successful killing blows.

His mental resistance to the blood and violence was no longer an issue, although he was not a cold blooded killer, it was enough to help him take on ordinary zombies without his fear causing him problems.

The zombies outside the door started to pile up while the others walked over them and started to push against the door more but it did nothing to the defences that were in place.

The noises of groaning and moaning were growing louder over time as the crowd attracted more towards the area which caused the security post to be surrounded from the inside and outside of the walls.

There was an additional noise from within which came from the phone Brick brought with him and set aside as it played the original owner's playlist on repeat to continue to draw the nearby zombies closer.

After a long time of holding the hoard of zombies off from the door, Brick sat with a tired look on his face and then began to remove his gloves while applying some wet wipes to his hands.

He took another drink to replenish his energy and to give him the feeling of being bursting with energy once again then put the small remaining amount in the bottle to the side. "Ha.. this really is tiring work. Good thing I came prepared, if I was anyone else then they would have been stuck in here with no escape. One moment of carelessness would lead to them being dragged close enough to be bitten or starving inside would be another result of being trapped here with little supplies."

While looking over the screens, he noticed that the amount of zombies inside had become much less and there were only a couple wandering around while there were still a larger group gathered outside the main window.

With the axe and knife, a new round of hacking and stabbing took care of the zombies which had gathered outside which formed a large pile of corpses.

While swinging and stabbing, there was a rush of energy surging around the body of Brick which made him become lost in the moment where he was killing the zombies one after another while avoiding any hands which came through to grab him.

Once the pile became very large and the number of zombies had reduced, there were less approaching close to the window unless he tapped on the bars or made noise. "This should be more than enough to keep others away."

There existed some rules of survival which humans had to follow if they wanted to keep their base from being attacked suddenly or if they intended to stop somewhere to rest or sleep.

It was that a large amount of humans could not remain together in one place for too long unless they were able to protect themselves and had countermeasures in place.

Larger zombie hoards or higher level zombies would be more sensitive to where humans were staying especially when they were sweating or bleeding so women on their menstruation cycle were one of the many things that allowed the zombies to be attracted to a certain area.

The best way to help a camp or temporary place being discovered and surrounded was to use the bodies of the dead zombies to mask the scent of the camp and those inside.

Someone would have to completely clear out the zombies in a new area before sleeping while moving the corpses to the outside of the room and it was the same for the Reed residence.

The zombies piled up outside served to protect the residence a little better by covering the entrance or wall areas with the thick smell of zombies.

The disadvantages were obvious since the corpses being exposed would only cause further spread of disease so it could only be used as a temporary measure and the fresher zombies would have to be put in their place after the old ones had been destroyed.

Those that had developed their defensive structures and traps no longer had a need for such tactics later in the novel but in the early stages, it helped to protect larger communities from the chances of being targeted by a zombie wave.

Brick took one final look towards the screens and his eyes fell on the outside of the security post. "Good.. now to get to harvesting."

The greed began to show in his eyes as he looked towards the zombie corpses piled up and he stepped towards the door then opened it slowly.

"Hrrrnnmmm."

Among the pile of corpses, a zombie was injured and still alive but the weight of the other corpses held it in place.

The knife in Brick's hand accurately stabbed into the head which ended its life and then continued to be inserted into the skulls of each of them.

Once he was certain that there were no living zombies among the pile and all had been killed, he climbed over the pile and started to pull onto the zombie at the top of the pile which followed by a the chopping off of the heads of each of them.

The heads were neatly placed to the side while the bodies were moved near the gate. "I wonder how those on the inner walls are coping? I wonder if there are any still living in the outer area… I hope they heard my announcement earlier if there are some left."

The sounds of the bones being cracked continued as Brick added to the pile of heads which was then thrown inside of the security post.

"Herrr."

There was another zombie which had appeared and was approaching but Brick had kept looking around himself so he spotting it approaching before it could get close.

A strong kick landed on its chest which knocked it down and caused the ribs to be damaged and cave in a little.

The body fell back and was helpless as Brick came nearby and stomped onto the skull several times until the zombie no longer moved.

The skull and face was completely destroyed and crushed under his boot which allowed him an easier time to cut into it and get to the crystal nucleus.
