Chapter 10 - Memories

"What are you talking about?"Lady Serena looked at her granddaughter with slightly widened eyes.

It was unbelievable for the old lady to hear Amira talking about love. Amira was afraid of falling in love because of what happened to her father.

Amira watched how lonely her father looked because of the lose of his wife as she was growing up. Although Mr. Adonis pretended to be okay, someone could detect the emptiness in his hazel-brown eyes whenever he talked about his wife.

"Don't pretend that you don't know what I'm talking about grandma," Amira said jokingly as the corner of her lips curved into a mischievous smile.

"Don't be paranoid, young lady."Lady Serena looked at Amira with a serious face although her voice said oppositely.

"And since when did you become a love expert?"Lady Serena asked her granddaughter daughter with raised eyebrow, a small playing on her lips.

Amira swallowed hard when she heard her grandma's response. Lady Serena chuckled when Amira stayed silent, probably speechless.

Lady Serena opened the wooden gate and stepped aside to allow Amira to walk into the place they call home.

"I missed this place so much."Amira closed her eyes slightly and breathed in the flower-scented fresh air  which made her feel relaxed instantly.

Lady Serena looked at Amira and a smile settled on her face. She couldn't believe that Amira had grown from a little girl into a young miss.

"Stop being dramatic young lady."Amira creased her eyebrows when she heard her grandma's words.

"You need to normalise being away from your home."She paused and a small sigh escaped her lips.

A deep frown settled on Amira's features because she didn't know what the old lady was talking about.

Amira twisted the metallic doorknob and the door clicked open. She collapsed on the wooden couch as soon as she entered the house and heaved a sigh of exhaustion.

"What if you win the bride-choosing competition? You'll be required to leave your family so that you can go to live in the castle."Lady Serena reminded Amira and sat on the couch next to her.

Amira had already thought about everything that her grandma said. However, she didn't pay that much attention to the matter because she wanted to concentrate on winning.

She turned around to her grandma and grabbed her hands gently then she gave them a slight squeeze.

"I'm aware of that grandma."She said with a small voice."Can we stop thinking about it and celebrate the little achievement of today?"The corner of her lips raised into a smile. She looked at her grand with pleading eyes.

Amira didn't want to think about sharing a home with those wicked royals because she felt nausea whenever she gave it a thought.

"I'm just trying to prepare you mentally dear."Lady Serena informed Amira who nodded her head in understanding.

"We're one step towards my father's justice grandma."A wide smile settled on Amira's face as she spoke those words.

"I thought that I wasn't among the qualified contestants when the judge called out contestant number forty-nine."She said in frustration.

"I was so afraid grandma."A heavy sigh escaped her lips when she gave it a thought."My fragile heart pounded wildly inside my chest."Amira placed her right hand on her chest dramatically.

Lady Serena stared at her granddaughter in amazement because she was stunned by how she was explaining. Her facial expressions changed with every gesture and word that Amira said.

"For a moment."Amira paused and took in deep breaths, "I thought that my heart was going to explode into a million tiny pieces."She rolled her eyes playfully and the old lady chuckled.

"You were worried for nothing dear."Lady Serena brushed the dark locks from Amira's face and tucked them behind her ear.

"I already knew you would make it!"The old lady twisted her lips shrugged her shoulders slightly.

Amira's heart melted into a puddle when she heard her grandma's words. She was happy that her grandma believed in her when she didn't entirely believe in herself.

That was what she needed, someone to assure her that she can do it! That she's better than all the contestants and that she will stand out among all of them.

"Thank you for believing in me grandma,  it means the whole world to me."Amira became emotional as she said those words and Lady Serena pulled her granddaughter into a tight hug.

"I believed in you since you were a small girl because you're a fighter."Lady Serena pinched her granddaughter's cheeks playfully.

"You fought for survival when your mother died after she gave birth to you."Grandma paused and sucked in a tight air when the tormenting memories clouded her mind.

She will never forget the scene.Lady Serena watched her daughter-in-law breath her last breath after giving birth to Amira. It was heart wrecking.

"Your mother died when you were ten minutes old."

Amira pressed her lips into a tight thin line. She wished she could have a chance so she could see her mother because she has heard many stories about her.

"You need to freshen up dear,go to your room and get changed as I prepare a warm bath for you."

Lady Serena said with a smile on her face and Amira nodded. She brush off the topic about Amira's mother when she realised that the poor girl was sad.

________

A sweet aroma clouded Amira's nostrils as she descended the wooden stairs.  She was now feeling energetic and fresh because of the herbal that her grandma had mixed in the bath water.

"What's in those pots grandma?it smells delicious."Amira said with a smile on her face, pointing at the small pots that was covered neatly.

"I cooked your favourite dishes."Lady Serena said, Amira walked to her grandma and pulled her into a side hug and planted a kiss on her hair.

"You didn't have to do all this grandma. You could have waited for me so that I could help you out."Amira grumbled.

"I don't want you to stress yourself too much grandma."She said with a frown on her face."It was just a small surprise for you dear."Lady Serena said.

"Thank you."Amira smiled at her grandma."Promise me that next time you'll allow me to help you out so that you won't be exhausted."She looked at the old lady who nodded in understanding.

______

"Mushroom soup tastes delicious."Amira complimented and scooped another spoonful of the soup.

"Knock knock."

When Amira was about to direct the metallic spoon towards her lips, they heard someone knocking on the door.
