Chapter 21 - Cornelis 20

TW// Racism

Cornelis left the castle through the forest, avoiding the village. She already felt uncomfortable when servants and guards were staring at her, despite knowing her. People in the village didn't. They all judged. They always did, ever since she could remember.

They stared at her dark skin, tattoos covering her body, her accent, her long black nail and black lips and her eyes - golden shiny, like serpent's eyes. Everyone always kept a good distance away from her.

That's because they know what you are.

They hate you.

They know you're a witch.

They fear you.

Cornelis lowered her hood and pushed the voices away. Despite the cold, she walked barefoot through the forest. She liked the feel of solid ground through her skin. Cornelis felt more connected to the place like that.

She looked over her shoulder, the castle now a great distance away from her. When Ivan asked her if she could temporarily change the appearance of a girl, she didn't question it. Even though she had never tried to change someone's appearance, she tried. Cornelis did manage to modify the girls eye colour and her face shape.

She was scared.

She was terrified of you.

It was true. The girl was trembling, frozen on the chair in front of Cornelis. Most people thought of magic as something that didn't exist and only as something that was written in stories. Cornelis tried to ignore the girls fear. As soon as she was finished, she left the castle before Ivan, or anyone could talk to her. She needed to get outside. The magic she had used drained her of powers.

Initially, Cornelis had come to the castle in hope that they had found Tivon. She needed him. Quickly. She was running out of time.

The stars are almost in the position.

You need him.

He's the only one who can help you.

The voices grew louder in her head. I know I need him. I just don't know why yet. How could she find him if even the royal army couldn't? Why did Elias kidnap him in the first place?

She closed her eyes as the voices grew louder and louder with each second. The wound on her shoulder started to hurt, as one would start twisting a knife through it.

It was your doing.

You are the one to blame.

"I know!" She screamed out loud. "Y ponz yr'x s hodqr. Uy xuondqiak'ya aayap bonpy. Uy xuondqiak'ya kyxirayotyk." Cornelis hissed angrily.

The voices stayed quiet at that. She opened her eyes. Cornelis found herself on the shore by the sea. She reached her hand to the wound and fell on her knees. She hugged her arm around her body, suddenly feeling cold.

Why was everybody leaving her? First her parents that she hardly knew about. Then her witch sisters. Most of them were killed and more had betrayed her, left her for dead. She knew that Sabur loved her, and he still misled her. She was a fool to trust him, but him leaving… It still hurt. And then the loss of her sister.

She would never forgive herself for that.

It was your foolishness that brought her there.

It was always your fault.

Ruor'x zu ona payak uys ron atypib uys aog.

Ona payak Tivon.

The voices were shouting, screaming over each other till Cornelis couldn't tell them apart. She covered her ears, as if that would help her from not hearing them.

"Stop, please!" The ground beneath her started shaking, rocks floating up into the sky, tattoos on her skin glowing.

It's your fault!

"I did that to protect her!" Screamed Cornelis. Her eyes were glowing bright when she opened them. Rocks that had been floating in the air shoot away from her. Cornelis was breathing heavily. Tears gathered in her eyes as she fell into the water beneath her.

"I just wanted to protect her." She sobbed through the tears. Her hands were trembling underneath the water.

And then she felt it. Cornelis hastily looked up at the horizon. Tivon. There was no mistake in it. She felt him. Of course, she could feel him, she had made sure she could, two years ago. Panic seized her in seconds.

She felt Tivon.

He fell into the water.

Tivon was drowning.
