Synopsis
Suddenly, I felt an ice-cold hand touch my chin, gently pulling my face upwards. I was met with a pair of sparkling eyes that posed dark red irises. His eyes were both breathtaking and frightening. My eyes trailed over this man's tall figure, allowing me to notice skin as pale as the winter snow and silky long black hair. He stood out in a wine-red tailcoat that boasted gold trimmings, a visible white shirt with ruffles at the neck poking out underneath and black breeches that emphasized his long, muscular legs. This man was unlike anyone I had ever seen before. No noble I have come across had ever looked quite as astonishing or carried an aura as powerful as this man. I wanted to look away, but I simply could not break away from his hypnotic gaze. I felt uneasy but somehow safe. This story tells the tale of the early life of Phoenix Arrington, a woman born in the 19th century. She was born to a white father that fished, a black mother that worked as a maid and she had three older sisters. They were of peasant status and it did not help that there were barely any other half-breeds on the western side of the village. She and her family were seen as pariahs all because of their race but they did not let it get to them. However, one day at the market when a woman voices her opinions about her, Phoenix realizes how hurtful it could be. That is when she meets the interesting young Lord Bellamy. Phoenix will come to learn about who she truly is and her connection with the family of the Duke and Duchess of Arundel. Things will drastically change but will they be for better or worse?

Chapter 1 - Prologue

"I won't let anyone die!" Kyga yelled, ripping the vein on her wrist with sharp teeth. She quickly held her wrist over the lips of each of the four strangers, one at a time. With each movement, thick blood dripped into their mouths and their barely conscious bodies slowly began to shiver. A young boy among the strangers, that looked to be twelve spoke in a desperate whisper "My...sis.....ter she's still....". Unable to finish his sentence, he mustered up all his strength to raise his index finger and point to the large fire that was within a mile of them.

Kyga picked up on what the young boy was forcing his body to portray even though he was near the brink of death. His sister was still in the castle and Kyga knew that she had to save the girl. She could not let any of them die. Kyga dashed to the castle within seconds, tearing apart the wooden doors that stood tall in the entryway. She had gotten the others out through the back exit and windows, but now there was no time. The fire was getting impatient, roaring like the strongest lion of the pride. She had to find that little girl even if it meant jumping through the fire to do so. Kyga ran up the flaming stairs to check the bedrooms. She kicked every single one open within milliseconds but found no girl. Running back downstairs, she checked every area possible along the way and finally she spotted a young girl with raven hair in the corner of the living area.

Her tiny body was covered in burns and her once pretty white dress scuffed and torn. She hurriedly picked up the child and fed her some blood. The child looked to be breathing but, the fire had gotten stronger, far too strong. It began consuming nearly every inch of the castle. There was no way both of them would make it out. Kyga knew what she had to do for this girl. This innocent child had barely lived her life and Kyga would do everything in her power to make sure she would survive.

Kyga ripped a section of her blue dress and wrapped the child carefully in it. She ran, avoiding the falling pieces of what once was the castle and kissed the child on her forehead. "You and your family shall live on forever with my gift" Kyga spoke, placing a turquoise amulet that once adorned her neck around the child's neck. With only seconds left before the castle would succumb completely, she threw the child through a clear path of the castle.

The child gently fell right beside her brother, who smiled in contentment. The look of a smile then changed into a quick frown as he wondered why the kind woman was not back as yet. He forced his head to look towards the castle that had started to crumble into large pieces. "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!" he screamed. His painful scream came out as a whisper thanks to being deprived of oxygen in the fire.

She shouldn't die after saving them all. He would feel guilty for the rest of his life knowing she gave his life just to save him. Tears began to fall from his eyes as he knew there was no way she was going to survive that fire. He was from a noble family and was used to being pampered and protected. However, this woman was too great to die in place of him and his family. An hour passed as he watched the castle burn to the ground, leaving nothing but ashes. He expended all his energy silently crying until he blacked out.
