He smiled and brought a slice of sandwich to his mouth, bit into it, and chewed, all the while watching me. It was only after he was done with that bite had he answered me.
“You see, word gets round. Although I must say, I have had my fair share of snooping. ‘Who is she?’ I’ve asked. Who is the fair maiden that has found a way to my brother? And by the looks of it have changed him so drastically? For as it stands, he doesn’t find you to be like the others, that much is clear to see with the way he speaks to you.”
“I didn’t know I was privileged,” I said quietly, looking away from him.
“Maybe privileged isn’t the word. Maybe you’re just different. Special. That’s not a bad thing, Elinor. As I said, I did my fair share of snooping. It all made me want to ask questions, I suppose.”
