Chapter 197 - Nothing In The Way

With the conversion of the virtuous hero, virtually the last hero that was willing to stand against the sins, for as much as it mattered, the progress against the god of control went swiftly.

More and more people worshipped or at least, chose to believe in a luminescent, big woman with a huge ego, whose size was only short of the whole world.

Pride was physically there and unlike the gods, restrained by an unknown force could exert her full power for everyone to see, she was simply more present and despite the fact that the gods existed and that everyone knew this, she just felt more real than them.

With all of the additional holy energy given to her by the people, the holy energy was soon turned into divine energy, theorically making her a goddess but she was too good to just ascend and do the same thing as her predecessors.

She was better than this, instead, she refused the ascension and just broke into the higher sky.

From there, the pitiful deities, weakened from most of their followers completely forgetting about them would try to plead with Pride but it was no use, there was no second spot as a divinity in Pride's mind.

All were crushed and had there energy siphoned from them, whatever god or goddess they were, whatever their domain was over, there was no exception to the rule.

"Soon, I will be the sole god of this whole, wide world, I will be worshipped like I derserve to-" she was trying to have a monologue but was interrupted by the sound of someone digging through some of the late deities stuff and someone slurping loudly.

"Excuse me, but can you not see I am trying to be cool and all?" spoke Pride as she turned to see Greed legs swinging upside down as she had dove inside of some chest like a cat and Gluttony slurping divine guts like spaghetti while sitting inside of some gods eviscerated stomach.

The two of them looked absolutely ridiculous.

They both answered back but with one with her head inside of a pile of valuables and another not stopping to eat, it all sounded like nonsense.

"How did you even get in here?" muttered Pride, already knowing that she wouldn't be getting a legible answer any time soon.

Instead, she looked ahead, where Wrath was at, Pride couldn't actually see her but only sense her, she was way ahead of them, probably having a heated discussion with the god of control or something.

"Ah! To think I used to a priestess for this guy, I wonder what he looks like" she wondered as he started walking again, heading for the next divinity she was going to slaughter with her bare hands.

"So, any last words? Pride will be able to kill your meagre self with ease, so why not admit your lies and deceit with your own voice? Your followers used to think that admitting one's own wrongdoings was the way to heaven, before they converted that is" spoke Wrath as she looked down on the shapeless god of control.

"..." he didn't respond at all, seemingly thinking about something else.

"Say, Michelle, was that 'Pride' of yours, the one that caused that enormous wave of power down on the mortal plane? I thought it was an ascending mortal but I didn't actually any ascension and apparently, Pride only arrived recently, much after this" calmly, the god of control didn't seem to pay attention to his inevitable doom.

"What kind of question is that? I don't know what you are talking about anyways, no wave of power washed over the mortal plane at all, at least nothing that a blind bat like you could possibly notice" Wrath was perplexed, the god of control was acting quite reserved and curious, completely different from the last time.

He had been defiant and confident in his feeble powers and authority and yet, he hadn't broken into a monologue about either of those yet.

"You see Michelle, when I was truly at the top of the gods, I was able to gaze into what was beyond our world, I saw the cosmos, other worlds with their own galaxies and peculiarities, I saw the beings that populated this space that separated all worlds, each of them were terrifying, the eldritch from outside and those you can find here have nothing in common, they are true gods" he sounded serene, as if he had made peace with something.

"I gazed into the darkness of the cosmos, feeling like something was staring back at me, there I saw what I believe was the true 'god' of everything, something I could not possibly describe with all of the words available, slumbering peacefully"

"This was Azathoth, many have seen his name mentioned somewhere, the knowledge of the edritch gods was simply present despite them having never personally visited this world and so I knew, who I was looking at and that my place was much beneath his, I was so much more inferior to the one they called the blind idiot"

"Quickly, I came to forget all of this and focused on maintaining my position at the top of this world, forcing myself to believe that I was one without equal, so as to not lose myself but recently, when that wave of power struck, I became thinking about it obsessively" the ever changing shape of the control god slumped down.

"Then, I remembered what I had seen after Azathoth, something much more concerning, something that caused me to almost go mad instantly, all this time, I hadn't truly been looking at those eldritch beings, there was a sort of intermediate that prevented me from succumbing to insanity" Wrath didn't know how to react as the god of control seemed visibly shaken as he talked to her, for the first time in years, she felt like he had gone back to who he had once been, a god that actually seemed capable of having created the world.

It had all been a lie of course but it was quite the notalgic sight.

"What did you see?" she asked and after a moment, the god of control looked back up.

"I saw three beings, all had something in common that I couldn't pinpoint..." he started explaining.

"First, I saw a giant beast, unlike the eldritch gods who didn't care about me or this world, I felt the intense destructive lust it had for the world, it had no face but it stared at me, as if waiting for an opportunity, a reason to attack but in the end, it didn't do anything"

"Secondly, I noticed a certain eldritch god, much like the other, it didn't seem to care but it acknowledged my presence"

"And then, a large inferno, shaped like ball, the orange flames squirmed all around and immediately, I knew that I had made a grave mistake, the inferno, it was heresy personified, its existence was simply blasphemous and it noticed me, immediately, without hesitation, it set the world ablaze, the orange flames greatly damaged the connections of the gods to the mortal planes, many divinities were burnt to shreds or turned into monster as the flame nested inside of their eyes"

"I somehow came out alive and unturned but the damage was too great, I tried to act as if I was unharmed but you, who had already started doubting me, caught onto it and not long after you had waged war against me"

"After you were gone, I had not much left and I clung to the expectations of my believers but now that they are no more worshippers, I feel like I can think clearly again"

Wrath didn't know what to say, she was jus shocked, she didn't expect things to be this way at all.

"Thank you Michelle" he said before beginning to walk away, toward where Pride was.

"My wings of war" he added softly before disappearing as he exited his domain.
