Chapter 96 - The Virus

At the same time as Narik's zombie invasion, another, similar but very different invasion was to take place, the necromancer hadn't been given much details on it in the events that he was somehow captured, he only know that another invasion would begin at around the same time as his.

Unlike Horn-Shatterer, the culprit behind the invasion was from the inside, a traitor of Laparadi...

"Knock... Knock..." said a quiet and shaky voice as the same as it's owner knocked on a simple wooden door.

The weak knocking almost opened the the door, breaking in would be as easy as stealing a candy from the hands of an armless child but not for the knocker, perhaps if she didn't forget to eat and sleep she would be able to kick it open.

A few voices came from inside of the small house, a young female voice spoke up first and then two other, older voices, footsteps approached the door and the one that had knocked suddenly felt like taking off running.

She felt so nervous, she feared she might mess up the only thing she really had to do but she steeled her resolved, tightening her grip on the thing she was hiding behind her back and put on a crooked smile, which looked perfectly natural plastered onto her pale and thin face.

The young woman who opened the door was quite surprised by the strangers clothing, she was wearing some sort grey coat that went all the way down to her ankles with a high collar, it was completely buttoned and the blonde woman in front of her was standing straight, shaking in place and sweating like no tomorrow and kept both her hands behind her back.

"Can... Can I help you?" hesitantly asked the young woman.

"Nnhhgg, yes, yes! You can help me..." blurted out the sickly-looking woman, suddenly glaring straight at the young woman and gritting her teeth, her face turning into an ugly expression as she stabbed whatever she had been holding right into the girl's throat, pushing out the red liquid inside with surprising force.

The liquid was thick at first but quickly felt like water as it seeped though the girl's skin, into her blood and bones, travelling through every organ rapidly, as the blonde woman just lightly pushed her away and closing back the door after retrieving her syringue.

Then, she actually took off running, making some bizarre sounds, some sort of eldritch mix of laughing, crying and shouting.

The victim of her assault convulsed on the ground as her sclera turned from the normal white to complete dark and her skin color turned impossibly pale in just a few moments, as though all the blood had been drained from her body.

The girl's parents, who had been busy doing something quickly came over to see what the loud thud they heard was and instead of finding a fallen objects or their daughters convulsing on the ground, they foud her standing up, her head flailed down as though her neck wasn't supporting anything anymore.

One look in the eyes was perfectly enough for anyone to understand that she couldn't be considered human anymore, it was simply instinctive but that reaction came second to worry for those two and instead of acting upon danger, they simply stood there as they tried to say something.

Before they could make a sound however, their daughter's throat and chest suddenly expanded like a balloon filled up with air, on the verge of exploding, bones shattered like twigs, skin and muscles ruptured under the pressure, blood spilled out before a loud sound blew all of it away.

The whole house a taken apart by the intense sound boom, sending bits of it flying away while the eardrums of the two nearest people were utterly pierced, bleeding from their ears but also nose and eyes, they fell to the ground, soon convulsing too and rising up again.

Although, the changes to their bodies were much more noticeable as they morphed into what could only be seen as monsters, growing claws and fangs, their limbs extending and shifting in shape, tearing and breaking all that was in the way.

The girl's clothes had been torn off but so had been her skin, leaving her abnormally shaped lungs fully in sight, her barely holding in head fell off but without killing her, she just kept on moving slowly around, her lungs filling up with air.

This had been chosen because it was technically in a village but still at a distance and completely hidden from view.

The three monsters went in search of new preys, two completely deaf and another with basically no senses left, despite this, all three quickly went in the direction of the village, as if still remembering it after their transformation.

Zombie invasions weren't unheard of, necromancers had already tried that in the past but never to such an extent and with bizarre monsters sprouting up on the opposite side to where the zombies were rampaging, Mylhart had to make a choice.

It was clear for him that he wouldn't be even halting any without a majority of the forces at his disposition, if had to do something, he would have to go all in and hope to wipe it out before moving on to the next problem.

Having the help of those three otherworlders would have been useful but they had vanished a while back, lesser sins sometimes showed up, some black knights that weren't affiliated to any knight establishement also appeared, it was utter chaos and all of those parties didn't seem interested in fighting each other.

The general of the interior would have to rely on mercenaries and adventurers for assistance and not just from Laparadi, he could send requests to adventurers without compromising the status of neutrality of Laparadi since adventurers and such were technically independent but it seemed like most of them weren't interested.

It was as though Heilig, Mawlique and Gloire had been comploting together down to even the adventurers to not intervene, this was hard to imagine, even if Mawlique had calmed down in the recent years after their failed war against Gloire, it was doubtful to imagine Mawlique allying on even the smallest of things.

Gloire and Heilig, that sounded more plausible...

The general didn't believe some of the attacks had to do with any of those countries, it was unconventional and a bit ridiculous to employ such destructive means.

"Would Willia have something to deal with undeads?" wondered Mylhart.

Thinking about the possibilities, he reminisced about adventurers he had met in his younger years, before being formally ascended to the position of general of the interior, they would certainly be capable enough to deal with one of the threats by themselves but he had no idea where to find them, so it was but a fluke.

Thinking about it, he also vividly remembered the tricks employed by one of those two men.

"Mmmh..." Mylhart rubbed his chin as he thought of something, sometimes, the solution to utter chaos, was even more chaos.

Now, whether or not that would work was so dubious Mylhart didn't even consider asking the king about it and chose to go on about it without informing anyone.

Who knows, maybe he wouldn't have to incite chaos any further.
