Chapter 118 - Stepping Up The Game (Arc 3)

As Feng Yongrui was deep in thought, he suddenly felt the bed vibrating underneath him. Feng Yongrui sat up in panic.

What was this? An earthquake? Was there supposed to be an earthquake in the Phantom Realm?

Feng Yongrui sat up and remained as still as he could. The vibrations seemed to stop, and Feng Yongrui gave a sigh of relief.

However, before he could move again, Feng Yongrui felt the air around him fluctuate, as if ripples were being made on the surface of clear water. Feng Yongrui heard a small buzz and a void appeared in front of him.

A piece of paper appeared, falling unto Feng Yongrui's bed. Feng Yongrui reflexively dodged the falling paper and watched as the void in front of him disappeared. The vibrations and buzzing noises also stopped.

Feng Yongrui was silent for a few seconds before he picked up the paper that had landed on his bed. Feng Yongrui looked at the paper closely. This handwriting... wasn't it from his Boss?!

After the System told him to refer the protagonist as "Boss", Feng Yongrui had grown accustomed to calling Chen Tengfei as such. Of course, Feng Yongrui would only call him "Boss" privately. In his letters, Feng Yongrui would always call him the "Master".

Feng Yongrui quickly read the contents of the letter. His Boss had praised him, saying he had done a good job. The contents of the letter also praised his writing skills, making Feng Yongrui slightly embarrassed.

His Boss also said that his observations and daily reports were entertaining to read. The next part of the letter was more serious.

First, the Boss warned Feng Yongrui that since he had sworn his loyalty to him, Feng Yongrui should not think of betraying him. There were a few stern warnings, telling Feng Yongrui not to be swayed by temptation, not to give himself away, and to stay alert.

Feng Yongrui wanted to laugh out loud. According to the Boss' words, recently he had found a mole amongst his spies. Was that why the Boss was warning him repeatedly?

After the warning Feng Yongrui, the Boss became more serious and told Feng Yongrui that the fight between the third prince and the fifth princess was not his doing.

The Boss also said that these past few months, Feng Yongrui had done a good job concealing himself in Xu Chao's mansion, but it was time to step up the game and spy on Xu Chao himself.

The Boss told Feng Yongrui to find out Xu Chao's daily routine and schedule as well as his likes and dislikes.

When Feng Yongrui finished reading the letter, he fell into deep thought. The Boss said that... the fight between the third prince and fifth princess wasn't his doing?!

"This is a problem," Feng Yongrui muttered. "If Boss isn't the one behind it, then aren't we in trouble? Doesn't this mean things aren't going smoothly like in the original timeline?"

The System fell silent for a while. "But... Host, I did not receive any notifications from the higher ups about this," it said. "If the higher ups didn't say anything, that means we shouldn't worry about this..."

Feng Yongrui nodded his head. "I know... but still... I can't help feeling a bit worried..."

Feng Yongrui looked at the letter again. His Boss wanted him to spy on Xu Chao and find out his schedule, likes and dislikes...

"I'll have to think about how to do it," Feng Yongrui said.

"Host, will you investigate the fight between the third prince and fifth princess?" the System asked.

"I'm also confused about that," Feng Yongrui said. "Boss didn't give any instructions on whether I should investigate it or not... He only said that he wasn't the one behind that incident."

"What if your Boss is lying, Host? Perhaps he just doesn't want you to know," the System suggested.

Feng Yongrui: "..."

"Are you saying the protagonist doesn't trust me?" Feng Yongrui lifted an eyebrow.

The System sighed. "Well, is he obliged to trust you? No. Maybe the fight between those two was really something that Chen Tengfei did, but he just didn't want to tell you... You shouldn't worry too much about this..."

Feng Yongrui rolled his eyes. "Are you badmouthing my Boss right now? Are you saying he's a paranoid person who doesn't trust anyone??"

The System scoffed. "Host, don't tell me that after a few days of becoming his spy, you're already dedicated to him and willing to lay your life down for him??"

"It's not like that. I just think that since he's the protagonist and I'm his friend, why would he lie to me?" Feng Yongrui retorted.

"Look, I get what you mean," Feng Yongrui sighed. "But I still want to investigate this matter, okay? Don't worry, System. I won't go too far. If things get too dangerous, I'll stop investigating, okay?"

The System sighed as well. "Fine, Host. I still think your Boss is hiding something from you, though," the System added.

Feng Yongrui nodded his head. "Okay, I know. I'll be careful."

Feng Yongrui put the Boss' letter inside the hidden compartment and laid on the bed, thinking about his next steps for tomorrow.

There were three things he had to do. The first one was to find out Xu Chao's daily routine and schedule. The second was to find out Xu Chao's like and dislikes, and the last one (which was the least important, because his Boss didn't officially tell him to do it) was to investigate the truth behind the third prince and fifth princess' fight.

To find out about Xu Chao's schedule, Feng Yongrui decided that he would either ask Big Brother or spy on Xu Chao himself. Feng Yongrui checked the skills that he still had. He had the Invisibility Skill (amateur level) and the Shapeshifting Skill (professional level).

"Host, I would not suggest you to use the Invisibility Skill," the System suddenly spoke.

"Eh? Why?" Feng Yongrui asked, confused.

"Host, your Invisibility Skill is only in the amateur level, whereas the guards in Xu Chao's mansion are highly skilled. Don't you think they will be able to find you easily?" the System said.

Feng Yongrui nodded his head. "That makes sense... But... are you trying to make me buy the professional level of the Invisibility Skill?" Feng Yongrui asked, squinting his eyes.

"A-ahem, of course not, Host... It's merely a suggestion. A suggestion..."

Feng Yongrui clicked his tongue and looked at the ceiling above him. He would try to get information from Big Brother first and see if he could find anything...

The next day, Feng Yongrui woke up and went downstairs to have breakfast as usual. He looked at Big Brother's expression and sighed in relief. Big Brother looked like he was in a good mood today.

Feng Yongrui ate his food and casually asked, "Big Brother, what will you do first today? Will you be serving the Master?"

Big Brother stuffed a huge piece of meat inside his mouth and shook his head.

"Today it's not my turn to prepare his bath. Today is the third day of the week, so the Master will not sleep in the mansion," Big Brother said.

Feng Yongrui's eyes widened and he struggled to keep himself calm.

"The Master will not sleep in the mansion?" Feng Yongrui asked.

"Ah... I wasn't supposed to mention it," Big Brother said, clicking his tongue.

"Well, it isn't exactly vital information or something," Big Brother added. "On the third day of every week the Master won't stay in the mansion. I don't know where he goes, but it doesn't matter, right?"

Big Brother gave a sly wink. "When the Master's not around, we can have fun and drink as much as we want," he whispered.

Feng Yongrui gave an awkward smile. Well... that wasn't exactly the reason he wanted to know this...

"Also, didn't you know?" Big Brother added. "I'm only in charge of preparing the bath for the Master on the last day of the week. On the other days I only clean his room, along with the other guys..."

"Eh? Little Fool, why are you suddenly asking about this?" Big Brother asked.

Feng Yongrui gulped nervously and pretended to look fine. "Haha... I was just asking because I was curious," Feng Yongrui said, smiling uneasily. "After all, your job sounds more fun than mine..."

"You know, every day I just take care of the Phantom Stallions. There's nothing new. But for you, Big Bro, you get to meet other people and see this and that..."

Feng Yongrui relaxed and continued talking.

"That's right. I've always wondered about this Big Bro. What's it like to clean up the Master's room? Is it true that everything inside is made of gold??" Feng Yongrui feigned ignorance and looked at Big Brother with gleaming eyes. Big Brother broke into a guffaw.

"Pffft... Did you really thing that was the case? Hahaha... You really are a Fool... Just because people make up rumors doesn't mean it's true!"
