Chapter 32 - Chapter 32

She felt heavy in the head, but she was fine then. She came down for dinner and he greeted her and with the remark, 'You got us worried over there!'. She tilted her head in affirmation to which he asked, 'You are doing alright, Rosalie?' She reassured him as she sat down. The maid brought soup for her, Johnathan took her spoon and filled it with soup. He moved it towards her mouth to be fed. She sealed her lips as Angie was in the dining with them. He stopped mid-way realizing his blunder and turned red. Angie said, 'Oh my dear, George Earl! This young love is making me yearn for your companionship! As I am as alone as the cold night sky . . ..!'. 'Angie . . ..!' Rosalie said irritatingly and Angie placed a hand over her eyes. Rosalie tried to grise the spoon from John who held it firmly. 'I will feed you! And that is it!' he responded to her attempt. 'Alright!' she opened her mouth and take spoonful's as he fed her gradually.

She smiled warmly and he responded to her with the same gentle smile. He leaned in for a kiss on the forehead while again happened in a total delighted moment without any deliberate attempt. Both of them blushed and after dinner they went to the garden in the estate manor. He took her in the white rose garden that her mother planted, and he restored. He leaned in on that cold night as the twinkling stars witnessed them both, he asked her the question which she eagerly awaited, 'Will you Rosalie, make me the most fortunate person by being my partner, till I breath my last?'. She replied to him with haste, 'Johnathan, now that I will be the most fortunate woman! And I will accompany you till the rest of your life! I will say yes, a thousand times if you will ask it to me a thousand times!'. He took her hand in his and secured the ring in her mid-finger. He took her face in her hands and kissed her face, cheeks, nose and forehead. He was a gentleman, and he could wait till marriage. He embraced her for a good minute. He held her face again in disbelief and just gazed into her eyes with all the love that he could offer. Then at that moment his eyes appeared to be her universe that encompassed his endless love for her. Both of them were the happiest beings that could ever be found on earth that day.

Oliver returned home where Catherine waited for him. 'Owe I an explanation!' she thought to himself and articulated with malice, 'That is what I would not be doing that ever!'. His mistress Charlette who accompanied him a week earlier and got injured by Catherine badly told him that. He desired lucy to be there that weekend, but his father cut her association off completely from Oliver. He sends her off to mainland to stay with her aunt and find a good husband there, likely an unmarried person. He was aggressive and manipulative and when he stepped in his home. People watched that happening and listening to their loud arguments to which most of them came with a complain to keep down. It ended up in Catherine who got severely criticized and hurt by Oliver. He asked her about her male friends visits and how she dances with them intimately to which he never objects that was the point of argument. He convinced her of being a uncommitted woman who cannot just keep a man's interest steady.

Catherine was now certain that she is at fault and told him, 'I should not have done that but instead you started being intimate with other women! Was that fair?'. He was not in the mood and mindset to argue further with her. So, he held her by the hair and slapped her twice. He told her, 'Think about what you are saying to me? Who gave to that right you miserable woman! What good you will be without me, you awful woman! Nobody would desire to look at you after you will be a divorced!'. She had her face bruised but she was so irrational after he assaulted her. She thought that who would marry me, 'I am just as good as dirt after I get divorce from him!'. That was his plan to dominate her and then keep the house which he transferred as a wedding gift to her in the family. He was not afraid now as he knew that she was not the same Catherine as earlier, the independent and confident one.

He continued meeting the women he desired and even walked freely in front of Mrs. Holdcroft to whom Catherine speak not a word about what she bears. It was only a matter of a single day when Eliot, Nora and Richard went to her home for a reassurance that she was doing well. Nora knocked at the door and asked the maid about Catherine. She informed them, 'They have gone to visit England and wouldn't be back till two weeks!'. But in reality, Catherine peeked through her bedroom window from behind the curtain. She looked at them leaving. She was relieved that they wouldn't see her like this she had bruises over her face and arms.

She told herself, 'I will meet them as soon as the marks lighten because she wouldn't be silent about them like I am!'. Nora turned back to sit in the car as Eliot told her, 'Why the maid is lying to us? I do not think she went anywhere! She is just avoiding us!'. She told him, 'Yes, we must check on her! I know she is inside, and she doesn't want to see us but I must check on her!'. They tried again and this time they barged in. Catherine, who was in her room, hurried and put some powder on her face to hide the injuries. She did it with fine and as Nora approached her and asked her, 'How are you holding up?' to which she replied I am doing well, thank you! Mom, send you here to check on me?'.

Nora answered her, 'Yes, she did! But we had to visit you as we and Eliot missed you! We needed make sure you were alright!'. Catherine gestured in reassurance and Nora added, 'You look fine and that is enough for us! Why were you hiding from us? And has he visited you that cheat!'. Catherine nodded in affirmation and told her, 'He came, and we just decided not get separate and he promised me to change for good this time!'. Nora kept an eye-contact to make sure she was not lying. And she couldn't tell this time whether she was lying or not. Catherine turned numb and insensitive, her expression was not warm and gentle as it used to be. It concerned Nora but she didn't comment on it, she told her, 'Let's have lunch together in the dinning!'. She held her arm, Catherine sensed pain with her hold as it touched the bruise, and she abruptly held her hand and untightened it. 'What happened? Do you not want to join us?' asked Nora.

'Just let me freshen a bit and I will join you! The maid will help you with the dinning!' she told Nora. 'Alright be done there quick!' she remarked. Nora felt awkward the way she unclenched her hand from her arm as she muttered a little. 'It is possible, but he wouldn't dare doing that!' she thought to herself. She went in the dinning and arranged the cutlery with some assistance from maid and a little help from the boys. They didn't continue the lunch till Catherine joined them. She tried her best to hide the bruise but in the light of the day Nora could notice the bluish grey and even brown spots near her lips and her forehead. Eliot noticed them as well, and could help but ask, 'Oliver must be enjoying the time of his life, being violent to your comeback in argument!'.

'That is not the matter at all! I just fell and hurt myself!' she told him. 'I didn't say that he hurt you anyway, but you have confirmed that he did!' Eliot remarked to her answer. He, Nora, and even Richard was now certain about the deliberate abuse. It was obvious and she couldn't just avoid them at all. 'It is vain to avoid this, Catherine! It is just absolutely unendurable!' she told her, but she did response and remained silent. Oliver came home and was overjoyed to have company of her friend after a long time. 'Great! Cathie, you have your friends over! What are you feeding to her against me now?' he remarked. Cathie told him, 'Nothing dear, they are here for just lunch!'. Oliver interrupted and ignored what she said, 'No that is not the case! I know these nosy people they remain restless unless they cause a mayhem!'.
