Chapter 4 - The Long Road Pt.3

We were back on the road, the sky was clear but the cold wind of October was taking it's toll on us.

As we we're passing a field on the highway we got to a bridge that was passing over another road but something bad was happening down below.

"Holy shit... What's going on down there?" He stopped the bike and we got close to the railings to get a better look.

From what I could see there were some people on top of a big RV that was surrounded by zombies, even my kid brain could tell there was no escape, we didn't have any way to help them.

"So this is where all the zombies went, makes sense why the city was so empty. Well, to bad for those guys, let's go."

"Can't we do anything to help them?"

"We can't, but even if we could I wouldn't take the risk, they could be criminals or pedos, and why would we risk our life for them. Maybe being in the army for so long really makes you cold..." He sighted while I stayed silent.

We got back on the road, it was a smooth ride because all the cars were on the side of the road but even when there were still cars on the road we easily got past them. There were some strange sightings like a mutant as tall as 3 normal zombies was just standing in the middle of a horde like he was their leader and some other strange zombies doing the same thing in other groups.

We drove for a couple more hours before we had to stop for gas again, we found one in our path and after filling our tank and eating, Jones took his phone out to see where we were.

The internet was still working, though barely, so we found out that we were close to entering Tennessee, we weren't even at the halfway point of the route, witch is understandable since we only drove for 7 hours. After confirming our location Jones called his son to see what was going on there.

"Hey, Robert. How are you doing, son?"

#Dad? I'm fine, where are you?#

"I'm almost in Tennessee, I'm still a way off. I think it'll take at least one more day. Did you check if the generator still works? I don't know how much longer the electricity will last."

#Yes, it works fine. We started fortifying the fence and Kenny started doing supply runs at the stores in town.#

"Good, take care. Oh, I almost forgot, who else is there?"

#Well it's just me, my wife, Kenny and his wife, and grandpa. He says he's been feeling well, even going out to take care of some zombies with his shotgun.#

"That's good to hear but tell him not to overexert himself so he doesn't get sick."

#I'll try, but you know how he is. Alright, dad, it was great talking to you.#

"Yeah, bye." He ended the call. "Alright, kid. Let's get going." I nodded.

We drove for half an hour until we saw the welcome to Tenesse. We drove for a couple more hours until we found a place to stay the night in a small town.

Not much happened that night so in the morning we continued our course and in a couple hours we saw the welcome to Arkansas sign but we sure as hell were not going there.

At the checkout of the state there was an enormous horde with three mutants sitting on top of the building looking at us. We were still two hundred meters away.

Between the three mutants one of them really stood out. It was a 10 meters tall humanoid with no skin, you could see his bulging muscles even from this distance while the other ones weren't very different from the mutants we saw so far.

The big one slowly lifted his arm and a pointed his finger at us. Immediately after his two sidekicks started running towards us followed by the army of zombies behind them.

Jones wasted no time and turned the bike around, we had maybe 20 seconds until they reached us. He was quick and in Les than 10 seconds we were off in the opposite direction. After a couple miles of going as fast as we could Jones found a way around that place trough Mississippi, so we took a road south and went straight until we got to Mississippi then we turned west towards Arkansas again.

We soon got to Greenville and before we crossed the Mississippi river we stopped to survey it since it would be a prime bandit outpost. We concluded that it was safe and traversed it.

After a while it started getting dark so we stopped at a hotel on the side of the road. We got a room with two beds that was away from the road and we left our bags there. We were looking around since there was still time before we had to go to sleep. Behind the building we found a parking lot where we left the bike and went to a store next door. I got some candy that I put in my bag and Jones just got a few packets of cigarettes. We weren't really talking at this point, we were both tired and just wanted to rest.

There wasn't anything else around so we went to our room to sleep, the sooner we left, the better. We still didn't know if that horde was still following us. On our way in we barricaded the front door and the door to our room them we went to sleep.

-12 A.M.-

"Wake up, they are coming." I heard a woman speak in my ear. I jolted awake and looked around but no one was in the room except Jones which was sleeping.

I got out of bed to go wake him up but the floorboard creaked and he woke up.

"What's up?" He asked.

"I heard someone speaking."

"We should have checked the other ro..." *Thud*

A loud thud was heard from outside.

*Bang*

"Get your things, we need to leave."

I didn't have much to take, only my backpack. We soon left the room and were in the hall where we had a clear view of the front door which was only standing because of the furniture we put in front of it but trough them we could se arms, lots of them.

Jones dragged me back in the room and opened the window, he got out first and helped me out too.

We got out right in the parking lot so the bike was close, we got on and right as the engine turned on the door finally gave out.

We got out on the street trough the side of the hotel and as I looked back I saw the same skinless giant just standing there in the front of the hotel but this time it just looked at us for a brief second before turning his head back to the hotel and smiling menacingly.

*WITCH! COME OUT!!!* It roared.

"Hah! Do you think I'm that stupid, I'll just stay here where you can't reach me. Come and get me you stupid dog."

*ARHHH!!!! I WILL DESTROY THIS BUILDING! DIE!*

The monster got blinded by rage and started punching and smashing at the building then I lost visual because we were so far already.

I got my eyes back on the road and a hundred meters in front of us a girl that looked about my age stepped on the road and was waving at us. Jones was taken by surprise and barely managed to stop in time.

"Hello, do you think you could take me with you? My mom stayed behind to fight that monster..." She was in tears, knowing that she will be alone in this world shortly.

"Your mom? So the monster wasn't after us? Wait she can even fight that?" Jones asked.

"... She... can't, at least right now, she was exhausted from making the two of us invisible and flying since yesterday..."

"That is insane, are you talking about magic? I don't believe it."

"Are you the girl that spoke in my ear earlyer?" I asked, she had the same voice so I assumed that is the case and she nodded in approval. "What's your name?"

"I am Emma. We have to leave already so that monster doesn't smell me, please take me with you."

"...Alright... alright. Jack, make some space for the lady."

I moved backwards a little and after she got on we resumed our course.
