Three years have passed on the farm, life was great, my 13th birthday just passed and Emma's was coming up, and just like that, on a quiet night when not even the crickets made any noise, I was thinking about what present should I get her.
'The best choice would be a book, right? Or maybe a whole series, but... where would I find it?'
I went downstairs and got the maps we had, we only had a map of the country and some maps of the cities nearby that the adults were in the process of raiding.
As I was looking through them, I finally found what I was looking for, as I was looking through Austin I found a place that had a dozen libraries close to each other, the only problem was that it was in the middle of the city.
Although Emma's birthday was in just one week so I don't have time to scavenge stores for the small chance to find a presentable book, so, I had to go there.
Austin was only half an hour away so if I took the motorcycle I could get back by tomorrow evening.
"Alright, I don't have time any time to waste." I wrote a small note that I left on the table saying that I was going out for a while and that I'll be back soon then I got a backpack and packed some water before getting my new metal bat and trusty knife.
I got on the motorcycle, wearing a helmet, of course, and just got on the road.
"Damn, this is exciting, I finally get to go out on the bike. Seriously, Jones, what's the point of teaching me how to ride if you ain't gonna let me!"
As I was having some fun a bright light flashed on the visor of my helmet, I managed to stay calm and managed to stop the bike to see what almost killed me.
Looking up at the sky, I saw a comet pass by the earth as "big" pieces of ice melted in the atmosphere, it was truly a spectacle to behold.
I got my helmet off to see the comet better but I failed to notice the few zombies sneaking up on me, I didn't hear them because of the motorcycle and just as I saw them in the corner of my eyes it was already too late.
One of the smart ones jumped on me and I didn't have time to react, I was falling to the ground, but I wasn't going out without a fight, before I hit the cold, hard concrete I grabbed the zombie by the neck and rotated my body so that it's head got smashed on the floor instead.
This one was incapacitated, but 5 normal ones were already on top of me, and more were coming. I was desperately reaching for my knife while wiggling my body so that it would be harder for them to bite me, right when I reached the knife, one of them but my shoulder making my hand fall limp.
I was about to give up, the adrenaline was diminuating the pain but it still hurt like hell, more than seven zombies were scratching and biting my body. Since the remaining people were immune to the virus they would just bite into us until we die, these fucked wouldn't even eat us, trust me, I saw it happen once, but that is not important now.
The pain was taking over, I was laying on my back and looking at the sky, there was a very bright piece of ice that was towering over the others. But it's light was getting dimmer and dimmer, and once the light finally disappeared, so did the pain I was feeling.
For a few seconds, I was disconnected from my body, I could see it on the ground, getting ripped to pieces, blood flying everywhere, but I didn't care, you could call it an out-of-body experience, but I would call it death.
But before long, I was sucked back into my body where a splitting headache that hurt thousands of times more than getting ripped apart hit me like a truck, I started screaming out of pain not even thinking about why the zombies seemed to ignore me or even why I could move my body.
Soon enough I passed out on the side of the road only to wake up the next day...?
"Ugghhh... Fuck... H-how the f-fuck am I still alive?" I looked at my body and I was almost completely naked, the only clothing left intact was drenched in blood just like my body, I inspected it for a while and I was left perplexed as to why and how I had no injuries.
"What the fuck... Seriously, I'm freaking out... It must have had something to do with the comet right? Didn't those guys say that a comet caused all of this and that it would come back?" I got up from the ground and took the water out of my bag to wash myself a little while making sure I had enough left.
"Those people said that it would come back in months after it started, why was it so late? Maybe they just got the calculations wrong, eitherway, what the fuck happened?"
I looked around for my things while trying to figure this thing up, the backpack was intact and I found my knife and my bat nearby, but those were t the only things that were nearby.
"Zombies!" With my bat in hand I started getting close to it, but something was off, it seemed to be unable to react to my movement, or at least it hardly perceived it. For example when I would go to it's right the zombie would take two or three seconds to react.
I thought that maybe this one was defective and got rid of it but the next ones all did the same thing.
"Did... did I get superpowers? Yes, yes, yes! I'm invincible!"
I killed some more zombies on the road just for revenge and to test my power a little before I got back on the motorcycle. I decided to go back home since I wasn't that far and to show off my powers to Emma.
I took another route home to a local library since I couldn't get to Austin for something special. The library was untouched by the hands of time and as I shifted trough the books I found a special edition book that she would probably like and also got some books for me.
The ride home was uneventful since the zombies would react to my presence only after I passed them and before I even realized, I was back home, where a gory sight met me.
