Chapter 44 - Defeated

Trina's eyes fluttered open as she tried to make sense of her surroundings. Her vision was blurry at first, but as it came into focus, a wave of nausea overtook her. The devastation before her was overwhelming. Blood was splattered everywhere, and the trails all seemed to lead back to her. Panic rose as her mind failed to recall what had happened—or even who she was. Was she responsible for this carnage? How could she have done this, and why?

She looked down at herself. Her clothes were torn and stained with blood, burnt in several places as though she had walked through fire. All around her, lifeless animals were strewn across the ground, their mangled bodies creating a horrifying scene. She felt weak, her body trembling as she struggled to stand. But as she took her first step, an inexplicable force slammed her into a tree several meters away.

How did I get here? Her thoughts raced as she realized she was now nearly 200 meters from where she had stood just moments before. I was just there… How did I move this far in a second?

Before she could comprehend what was happening, a screeching noise pierced her ears. The sound was unbearable, an unnatural shriek that rattled her mind. She tried to locate its source, but her vision began to warp. One moment, everything seemed normal; the next, time slowed to a crawl. Her perception fluctuated between clear vision and something unnatural—a distorted view tinted with red and blue hues.

What is happening to me? Desperation clawed at her chest. All she wanted was for this nightmare to end. She took cautious steps, trying not to trigger whatever bizarre speed her body seemed capable of. When she moved toward a patch of sunlight, her senses began to settle. The sunlight seemed to calm her, regulating her heightened awareness.

Looking around, she spotted a fruit tree in the distance. Hunger gnawed at her, and the sight of food filled her with a faint hope. She moved toward it, taking deliberate steps under the scorching sun to avoid any shade. When she reached the tree, she hesitated. The idea of standing in the shade again filled her with dread, but she had no choice. Steeling herself, she stepped under the branches.

Her senses heightened again, but this time, it felt different—manageable, as though she was beginning to regain some control. It's like I've done this before… but I don't remember. She took a deep breath of relief, thankful the chaos had subsided. She ate her fill from the tree's bounty and allowed herself to rest beneath its shade.

As night fell, Trina realized she had no place to sleep. Before she could think of setting up camp, a sudden and overwhelming thirst overtook her. Frantic, she searched for water, stumbling through the dark. She spotted a stream in the distance and hurried toward it, but just before she reached the water, her strength left her, and she collapsed.

When Trina awoke, morning had come—but the sight before her was as horrific as before. Dead animals littered the ground, and her body was drenched in blood once more. She staggered to her feet, her mind reeling with self-loathing and confusion. What kind of monster was she? Despair settled deep in her chest as she walked to the river to wash the blood from her skin.

I can't go to a town, she thought bitterly. If I did this to animals… I can't risk hurting people too. The thought terrified her. Determined to isolate herself, she resolved to find the most uninhabitable place she could—somewhere she could live alone and do no further harm.

After hours of walking, Trina came face to face with a wall of thick black mist. It loomed ahead, dark and foreboding, but she welcomed its desolation. Without hesitation, she stepped into the mist. As she walked through, a strange reddish-purple hue surrounded her, though she couldn't understand why. On the other side of the mist, the land opened into an endless desert devoid of life. It was exactly what she had been searching for.

Trina trudged through the barren expanse, exhaustion pulling at her limbs. Her steps were slow, each movement a struggle. Suddenly, the ground began to tremble. She froze, sensing something massive approaching beneath the sand. Giving up, she dropped to her knees, ready to accept whatever fate awaited her.

The earth exploded around her as a massive wyrm burst from the ground, its monstrous form casting a shadow over her. Before she could react, her body moved on its own. Her instincts took over, pushing her to survive. She darted away at an incredible speed, faster than the wyrm could follow, though not at the full velocity she had experienced before. The sunlight seemed to limit her abilities, but even at reduced speed, she easily outran the creature.

When Trina finally stopped running, she realized she had crossed into a new area. The desert was gone, replaced by an unfamiliar landscape. Before her stood a massive gate. Dread settled in her stomach as she realized what this meant—she had reached a settlement. No… I can't go near people. Not like this.

Her body, however, could take no more. She crumpled to the ground, exhaustion pulling her into unconsciousness.
