Chapter 11 - Battle of Welking Bridge.

"Tell the right flank to begin moving according to the plan." Count Gregor ordered a rider besides him while also watching the mercenary army on the opposide bank of the river slowy starts to charge towards their position.

Afterwards the rider rode towards the right flank and began to tell heralds to order the right flank to move according to the count's order.

Minutes passed and now the entire right flank in the count's army could be seen slowly moving and expanding towards the right.

As the right flank got farther and farther away from the center, a small gap could be seen forming between the right flank and the center.

Not only that, as the right flank stretched and expanded towards the right, their line gets thinner and thinner at each passing minutes.

The mercenaries left flank meanwhile who had already began to cross the river, saw this and was immediately puzzled by this move, slowing the momentum of their charge.

Afterwards, the lieutenants and aides immediately scrambled to report this situation towards their commander, Tyler.

"Boss, the enemy's right flank are moving towards the right, it seems they're planning on hitting our left flank in a flanking maneuver!" an aide loudly reported as he pointed towards the visible count army's right flank, who is now slightly far away from their army's center, not only that, a visible medium gap could now be seen in between them.

Tyler then glanced towards his left flank and his enemy's right before nodding his head.

"Okay, divert our entire left flank towards the right flank of our enemy, after ours will smash them, order them to immediately strike towards the now vulnerable right flank of our enemy's center." Tyler immediately ordered.

The lieutenants and aides saw this and was immediately relieved to see that reason has finally came back in Tyler's senses.

And just like that, heralds were sent, and the mercenaries left flank began to turn their direction towards their enemy's right flank.

Meanwhile, the count saw the mercenaries left flank had already began to divert all of their full attention towards them, finally seeing a small gap in the enemy's army slowly starting to form as their left flank began to separate from their center.

'It seems the plan is now working.' The count thought to himself with a smile before setting his sights towards the center of his army led by Baron Patrick.

Meanwhile, the count's center and left flank could be seen massing themselves together in tight clumps in order to try and stop the now charging mercenaries towards them.

Especially the center of the count's army who is now on the verge of colliding with elements from the enemy's center who had now began to cross the bridge.

"Brace for impact!" Baron Patrick while on horseback, ordered the very nervous levy spearmen at the very front column of the entire center formation.

With wooden shields up, and their spears lowered and pointed towards the charging mercenaries infantry and cavalries, a shieldwall was now formed at the very front of the center and right flank formations of the count's army.

And between the shields, nervous and scared expressions covered the faces of the soldiers who were formerly simple peasants who knew nothing about the art of war that were drafted and conscripted to fight the wars of their lieges and overlords.

And among those faces were a familiar one, a man who volunteered to march with the count's army to protect his family and his simple village.

As the mercenaries flooded the river below the bridge, a few hundred light cavalry from the mercenary army has finally crossed the bridge, they were then immediately followed by the thousands of heavy infantry lagging behind them.

'The bastard's army is tiring themselves out.' Baron Patrick thought to himself as he spotted a few heavy infantry clad in heavy armor from the mercenary army began to slow their pace down.

He even spotted some who unluckily slipped on the river's current, unable to get up due to their heavy armor and drowned in the process.

But nevertheless, they still continued their charge, albeit with a now slowed pace.

Meanwhile, on count Gregor's left flank, thousands of bowmen and crossbowmen from the enemies right flank have already crossed the river and is now preparing to unleash their volleys upon count Gregor's left flank.

They were also supported by the thousands of heavy infantry who lined themselves at the very front of the ranged units in order to protect them, also in addition with the tens of thousands of heavy infantry lagging behind the ranged units.

"What should we do, my lord?" an aide besides baron Ian asked as he observed the rapidly advancing mercenaries in front of them.

"Shields up! we hold this area according to the plan." Baron Ian quickly responded.

And just like that, the entire center and left flank of the count's army are now locked in a solid shield wall, ready to receive the heavy charge of the mercenaries at any moment.

Minutes passed and the first volleys were finally unleashed towards the count's left flank.

As the arrows and bolts fell upon the levies currently in the shield wall formation, screams and shouts immediately resounded in the entire flank as those who were unlucky enough were pierced through the small gaps of the shield wall, this event also marked the start of the entire battle as a whole.

As arrows and bolts rained upon the shield wall formation, panic quickly spread through the entire ranks.

"We're gonna die!" a levy soldier said as an arrow pierced through his shield, also piercing the arm that was holding the shield in the process.

"I can't take this anymore!" another levy soldier broke down and accidently lowered his shield because of the panic, which led to multiple arrows founding their way towards him and killing him.

As arrows rained upon the levies non stop, the heavy mercenaries countinued their advance towards their position.

Baron Ian quickly noticed this and immediately turned to face the few hundred light cavalry men with him who are also seen trying their best to dodge the raining arrows by manuevering their horses around, causing confusion and deaths in the process.

"Listen up!" Baron Ian suddenly screamed, catching the attention of the light cavalrymen towards him.

"My lord, we must retre-" a rider tried to suggest but he was suddenly cut off as an arrow bolt slammed into his chest, knocking him off from his horse.

Nevertheless, baron Ian ignored it and started to speak, despite the raining of arrows around him.

"If we don't stop those archers, this volley's not going to end!" Baron Ian screamed, pointing towards the line of mercenary archers on the river, supported by another line of heavy infantry, while the rest of them now floods towards them.

"How?" a frightened rider quickly asked.

"How? we charge towards them and scatter them in the process." baron Ian answered, a now crazed expression forming on his face.

The few hundred riders were suddenly taken aback by his words, but nevertheless they all nodded their heads, albeit with slight reluctance.

"Don't think about yourself, think about how the entire plan will fail if we get decimated right here and now, and I believe you're already aware of the consequences if we were to be defeated, not only will our cities be free for the taking, so is our villages and fields will now be left open to their aggresion." Baron Ian explained as he rode his horse forward.

He was then followed by the few hundred light cavalry as they slowly gallop towards the bank of the river.

Raising his sword high in the air for everyone to see, he waited for the entire light cavalry to gather up behind him before finally giving the order to charge.

The heavy infantry mercenaries who are almost on the verge of crossing the river towards the other side, saw this and was immediately alarmed.

"They're going to charge!" A mercenary lieutenant screamed in alarm as he and a few hundred mercenaries who are now near towards the opposite bank of the river tried to form a line with their shields up.

"They're forming up!" an aide besides baron Ian yelled in panic as he pointed towards a line of heavy infantry mercenaries currently in the process of forming a shield wall.

Wasting no time, baron Ian finally gave the order to charge.

"CHARGE! MEN OF RABIA!" after this order was given, approximately 440 light cavalrymen descended upon the river bank and charged towards the mass of mercenaries who are trying to cross the river.

"Aaghh!" Screams from the charging horsemen resounded among their ranks as they close in towards the shield wall the mercenaries had made.

Added by the heavy weight of their armor and putting some of their effort and energy balancing in the raging current of the river, the light cavalries quickly smashed through their ranks, cutting the mercenaries down like butter.

"Die, you bastards!" Baron Ian yelled as he sliced a mercenary in front of him in two, who is clearly seen running away from the clash.
