Chapter 8 - The Clash between Poseidon and Athena

Everyone has heard of the Powerful Poseidon, the god of the seas and his niece Athena-the goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare, and some people might have heard about how the relationship between them was not....Easy and poor Medusa eventually became one of the victims of the quarrels between the two. However, the animosity between Poseidon and Athena are not the work of chance.

In ancient Greece there was a region now known as Attica, There Cecrops reigned, he was a being who was born of his own land. He had a serpent's tail and a man's trunk and under his rule the city of Cecrops flourished. This city was surrounded by the seas, fishing was essential in the society as much of the people's food was gotten from the sea and due to its dependence on the sea, the cult of Poseidon was strong in the region. The god of the seas wanted a city that would glorify him and for this reason he went to Secropia and he promised the people of the city to consecrate the city to the lord of the seas and they would have the ocean as their backyard and that they would overtake all other people while they are on the seas and so he told them to change the name of the city to Poseidonia and they would receive his blessings and then the god hit the ground in which he stood with his trident and a fountain of salt-water began to gush forth, he told them that it was his gift to them and that before they depart for the sea, they should kneel before the fountain and it would tell them if it is safe to sail.

Suddenly, a strong flash interrupted Poseidon and in the middle of the light there appeared the silhouette of a female figure. It was Athena, the goddess also wanted to be the patroness of the city and then she addressed the crowd who already surprised by Poseidon's visit, and they were now perplexed by such a majestic deity. She also addressed the citizens of Attica and told them that if they chose her as the protector of the city then beauty and wisdom would bear fruit in the city and the arts and sciences would develop like nowhere else in the world then the goddess also struck her spear to the ground and a beautiful olive tree was born in the hole and she told them that it was her gift to them because she knew how arid the earth around them was and so the fruits of the olive tree could be their food and they could also use its oil to ward of the darkness and warm their homes. The people were amazed by the gift, but Cecrops in order to prevent Poseidon from becoming infuriated due to the fact that he was overlooked, he thought that the people of the city should decide what god to honor. The men lived and spent their days in the sea and so they voted for Poseidon, the women on the other hand who lived from the land believed that the gifts of Athena were superior and since there were more women in the city than men, Athena won.

Poseidon was furious and did not accept the decision of the crowd and so he decided that the only way to decide was for them to fight. Poseidon being one of the most powerful gods, he believed that Athena was no match for him, but the brave goddess had no fear and prepared for the clash. The battle between the gods began and they measured forces and then out of nowhere, the dispute between the both of them was interrupted by a mighty thunderbolt from the sky and Zeus told them that their dispute would be discussed at the council of the gods of Olympus and the fate of the city would be decided.

On Mount Olympus, the gods meant to settle the dispute between Poseidon and Athena. Zeus was the head of the meeting, and he allowed the other gods to decide on the subject, All the male gods voted for Poseidon and all the goddesses voted for Athena. As chairman of the board, Zeus abstained from voting and so Athena won by the difference of only one and so the ancient city of secropia came to be known as Athens and in honor of the goddess a beautiful temple was built on top of the acropolis, however, Poseidon's fury made life difficult for the Athenians, they were no longer welcome at sea, and the concerned population had to go to the oracle at Delphi. The Pythia told them that Poseidon's fury would only be diminished if Athena's women were punished and so to reconcile with Poseidon, a decree was made, and all the Athenian women lost the right to vote and to seal the peace between Poseidon and Athena, a beautiful temple was built in honor of Poseidon at cape Soonyan and so the god was magnanimous and forgave the people of Athena which allowed the people to keep the gift given by the god and so in Greece, a city emerged that would stand out from the rest and It took thousands of years for Athenian women to recover their right to vote.
