Chapter 17 - Shadows of Companionship

Myra

From the beginning it was always my mom and i. we didn't have problems but one thing about her. She was a neglectful little cunt. Whenever she goes on dates she always leaves me alone in the house and this was when I was 6. She almost got arrested for it but being the quick thinker she is she smarted the police and slips right through their fingers.

She started dating this guy called Barry he was her prince charming.

Ugh, pathetic right how could you be so sure that you'll start dating for like six months? A decade went by and they were officially married. I was happy for her.

As much as I used to hate Barry he has a cool son called Scott who is one year older than me and has been the older brother I ever had.

I used to live in Brooklyn New York when my father was alive. He died when I was 2 years old in a freak accident.

Today was my 16th birthday and I was supposed to go to dinner with my friends Ruth and Liam but unfortunately, because there was a wild wolf-dog roaming the streets so we had to stay inside.

My mother is working late at the hospital. I hope she's okay because I'd hate it if something happened to her or even worse I'd lose my mind.

I found myself pacing restlessly in my room. The sounds of distant police sirens and the occasional howls of the roaming wolf created an eerie atmosphere.

As I stared out of my bedroom window, someone entered my room. "Hey, Myra, I know you're bummed about the dinner, but safety first, right?" he said, trying to lighten the mood.

I sighed, "I know, Scott. It's just... I was looking forward to celebrating my birthday with Ruth and Liam."

Scott nodded understandingly. "Tell you what, we can still have a small celebration here. Just the family. Dad's preparing something in the kitchen, and I helped him set up a little surprise for you."

I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. Scott ushered me downstairs, and as we entered the living room, the lights flickered on to reveal a room adorned with balloons, streamers, and a table filled with my favorite snacks. The sweet aroma of a freshly baked cake wafted from the kitchen.

Barry appeared with a grin. "Happy Sweet 16, Myra! We might not have Ruth and Liam, but we can still make it memorable."

I couldn't help but smile. It was a thoughtful gesture, and I appreciated the effort they had put into making my birthday special, despite the unexpected circumstances.

I got up to wash the dishes when my doorbell rang. "Who could that be?" Barry asked and I shrugged before jogging to the front door. As I opened the door a gun was pointed in my face out of fright I screamed out for help. "I'm sorry so young lady!!!" Officer Samuel showed his badge and I calmed down. I move away to let him in and see Scott with a knife. "It's just Officer Samuel," I said embarrassed. "Oh okay. What's up?" he hides the knife.

"Well you already heard about the wild dog." just then I hear footsteps coming from above. "Did you hear that?" I asked quietly and they stopped talking to hear it for themselves.

"I'm going upstairs." Samuel mouthed and we nodded. I stood by the front door just in case we had to run out you'll never know. "As a grown-ass man, I must admit I'm scared shitless." Scott laughs nervously. I held his hand so he would chill out.

7 minutes later I hear a gunshot and a barking coming from outside. I looked out my window and saw a German shepherd on my porch. It claws at the door So I let it in maybe it would help the cop I don't know.

"Yes, Usain bite the motherfuc- what the fuck!!!?!?!?" I heard this blood-curdling scream that made me too cowardly to investigate. Two more shots were fired and it got completely silent.

"I think we should look-" Scott moved and I yanked on his wrist so hard I think I dislocated something. "Don't fucking move Scott." I pleaded and we stayed glued to one another.

Suddenly my cell phone rings. Oh god, why now? I tip-toed towards it and answered with a whisper. "Why are you whispering?" Ruth asked amused. How do I tell her that there's an intruder and a police officer having a shoot out in the upstairs of my home?

Scott and I cautiously ascended the stairs, uncertainty hanging in the air. The lifeless body of the German shepherd greeted us on the landing, a casualty of the chaotic events.

As we ventured further, they discovered Officer Samuel sitting on the floor, his gaze fixed on some unseen horror. His face bore the marks of terror, and it sent shivers down my spine. The room whispered of an encounter with something that had shaken the usually composed officer.

I approached cautiously, my eyes scanning the surroundings. "Officer Samuel, what happened here?" I inquired softly, sensing the gravity of the situation.

His vacant stare slowly shifted towards us, haunted eyes locking onto mine. "It was no ordinary dog. There's something else out there," he muttered, voice trembling with fear.

Scott exchanged a worried glance with me. Whatever had transpired had left Samuel on the edge, grappling with an unimaginable reality.

A heavy silence enveloped the room, broken only by the distant sounds of the city outside. The unexpected turn of events had left an indelible mark on my 16th birthday celebration, plunging them into a mysterious and unsettling night.

Scott carefully helped Officer Samuel downstairs, their steps echoing in the unsettling aftermath of the mysterious events. I remained upstairs, determined to unravel the secrets that lingered in the air.

As I delved deeper into the room, searching for clues, an unexpected intrusion shattered the fragile calm. A colossal pale vampire bat crashed through the window with a force that sent glass fragments scattering across the room. My heart raced, but a peculiar calmness emanated from this creature's eyes.

Frozen in terror, I met its gaze. A silent understanding passed between us, an unspoken connection that prevented it from hurting me. At that moment, I glimpsed a strange tranquility within the monstrous creature.

Just as Scott rushed into the room, it withdrew from me, as if compelled by an unseen force. It made a swift attempt to retreat, its massive wings creating a gust of wind. Before disappearing into the night, it cast one last glance at me, leaving an indelible mark on my senses.

The room fell into an eerie silence, broken only by the distant city sounds. Scott and I exchanged bewildered looks, grappling with the inexplicable events that had unfolded before us.

As it vanished into the shadows, Scott and I were left in the aftermath of the surreal encounter. The shattered window and the lingering traces of the strange left us grappling with the reality of a world they had yet to fully understand.

Scott's eyes widened as he surveyed the broken glass and the remnants of the shattered window. "What in the world just happened?" he exclaimed, his voice a mix of shock and disbelief.

I was still processing the encounter and shook my head slightly. "I... I don't know. But I did see its eyes It was like it could understand me."

Scott frowned, trying to make sense of the situation. "What was that? And why did it crash through our window?"

Before I could respond, Officer Samuel, having regained his composure, approached cautiously. "Is everyone okay here?" he asked, glancing at the broken window.

"We're fine," Scott replied, eyeing Samuel with suspicion. "But what the hell was that thing? And don't tell me it's just a wild animal."

Third person pov

Ruth walks with earphones in, nodding her head to the rhythm of her favorite song. She takes occasional sips from her coffee cup, engrossed in her world.

---

QUINN, the werewolf, crouches in the shadows, eyes focused on Ruth as she approaches. He readies himself for an attack, muscles tensed and senses heightened.

---

Suddenly, Ruth glances into a store window, her attention caught by a beautiful display. She decides to check it out, slowing her pace.

---

The CIA SCIENTISTS, concealed nearby, seize the opportunity. They swiftly and silently surround Quinn, armed with advanced technology.

---

As Ruth admires the display, she hears a strange noise but brushes it off, attributing it to the city's usual nighttime sounds.

---

The scientists move with precision, using a specialized device to emit a blinding flash of light. Quinn, caught off guard, roars in frustration as he's temporarily blinded.

---

Ruth turns her head, momentarily distracted by the commotion, but her gaze quickly returns to the display, the incident fading from her attention.

---

The scientists efficiently secure Quinn with advanced restraints, their actions choreographed with military precision. The blinding light device now points toward Ruth.

---

The scientists flash the device toward Ruth, erasing any memory of the supernatural encounter. She blinks and looks around, a brief confusion crossing her face, but she shrugs it off.

---

As the scientists vanish into the night with Quinn in tow, Ruth continues her stroll, completely unaware of the extraordinary events that transpired just moments ago.

Janet

Luke's gaze shifts between all of us, a hint of unease apparent. "What about you, Janet? Do you feel any symptoms of the virus?"

I shake my head. "No, at least I don't think so. It's just this lip wound..." I brush my fingers across my wounded lip. "No other symptoms, yet."

Luke's face softens with concern. "Keep an eye out for any changes. I'm going to go get you some silver as a precaution. We can't take any risks."

"I will. Don't worry," I assure him. "Hopefully they'll have Quinn under control by then, and this bite wound will be insignificant."

Luke's eyes narrow, clearly doubtful. "How can you be so sure? This is a really dangerous situation. You could have contracted the virus already, and we wouldn't know until you turn."

"I'll be fine!" I insist, feeling frustrated, but Luke's expression remains skeptical. And Justin and Kayla nod in agreement.

"So what's the plan until Quinn is contained?" Justin asks, glancing around at Kayla.

"We can't leave the house," Kayla warns. "We need to stay contained since one of us is infected. We have enough supplies to wait it out for up to two days."

"Let's hope Quinn is under control by then," Luke replies. We exchange a grimace, the gravity of the situation apparent.

Breaking news: Animal control teams have been on the scene of a tense standoff with a wild dog that has been rampaging through the streets. The dog, believed to be a stray, has been harassing passers-by and showing a disregard for human safety. Fortunately, animal control officers have been able to capture the animal and take it into custody. They were able to subdue the animal with a tranquilizer dart and transport it to a nearby animal shelter. No injuries have been reported during the incident, and officials are urging the public to stay away from the area until the situation has been fully resolved.

"It's probably the members of the holy order that captured him for a cure," I say. Luke looks confused.

"Yeah, They are like the secret CIA in Vatican City, and even the CIA doesn't know about them."

Kayla adds as she explains to Luke. "One of our friends, Gabriel works for the holy order. He has told us a lot about them, including that they are working on a cure."

Luke was starting to look worried. "So you're saying they're not after Quinn because they want to hurt him, but because they need him to make a cure?"

Kayla nods.

As we discuss the situation, Justin's phone rings. He glances at the caller ID and says it's Simon. A mix of relief and tension washes over me. He answers the call, putting it on speaker so everyone can hear.

"Hey, guys," Simon's voice crackles through the phone. "I saw the news about Quinn. Is everyone okay?"

"We're fine," I reply. "But we need to know if it was the Holy Order who captured him. We're worried."

There's a brief pause, and then Simon hesitates before responding, "No, it wasn't us. Maria, our scientist, would've briefed me about it if it was. I'm not sure who did it, but it wasn't the Holy Order."

I exchange puzzled glances with the others. If it wasn't the Holy Order, then who could have captured Quinn? The situation is getting more complicated by the minute.

"Simon, if it wasn't your agency, then who else could be involved?" Justin asks, his voice filled with concern.

"I don't know," Simon admits. "But I'll do some digging and find out what's going on. Just stay put and stay safe."

As the call ends, uncertainty hangs in the air. The mysterious circumstances surrounding Quinn's capture deepen, and we're left wondering who might have taken him and for what purpose.

Sebastian

After a long night of my permanent freedom for the first time, I felt sleepy. As I was about to dose off someone knocked on my bedroom door. I groan and ask who it is. "it's Aiden your bestie." He sang and I couldn't help but smile. I get up and let him in. He hugged me like I was gone for a year. "I was worried sick about you Sebby."

I snicker and pull away looking at him with an arched brow. "Thanks and love the nickname. Tonight was stressful for the wild dog. Glad no one got hurt or at least not that I know of." I say sitting on my bed. He copied my movement as well. "So... Hmm what do with your new family while quarantined for several hours oh and where's your mother? Usually, I'd see her in the kitchen making something but she isn't there."

I froze and thought of a valid lie because I couldn't tell him about her real reason for not being here.

I take a moment to compose myself, realizing that revealing the truth about Gheata might complicate things with Aiden. With a casual smile, I respond, "Oh, she went out for some personal matters. You know how it is, unexpected stuff."

Aiden looks a bit concerned. "Is everything okay with her?"

"Yeah, yeah, just some family issues to sort out. She'll be back soon," I assure Aiden, downplaying the severity of the situation. "But enough about that, let's make the most of the night. What do you feel like doing? Movie night, video games, or maybe raiding the kitchen for snacks?"

Aiden grins, his enthusiasm returning. "Movie night! We can save the video games for another time. What's in your movie collection?"

"Horror?" I say like I was asking a question.

Aiden's eyes light up with excitement. "Perfect! Horror it is then. Any specific movie you're in the mood for?"

I grab a few horror classics and some newer releases. "How about a mix? We can start with an old-school favorite and work our way to something more recent."

"Sounds like a plan," Aiden agrees, settling in for the movie marathon. As the night unfolds, we immerse ourselves in the chilling tales on the screen, temporarily escaping the supernatural mysteries that lurk in the shadows of our lives. The camaraderie with Aiden provides a welcome respite, allowing me to forget, if only for a while, the complexities of my newfound existence.
