Chapter 17 - 17 - Gratitude

Just after David started chasing the intruder.

Sarah looked anxious as she quickly grabbed her phone and called the police.

(Police, what's your emergency?)

"There is an intruder in my house." Sarah told the dispatcher while moving to stand just outside the door to be able to perk down the hallway and fidgeting in distress wanting to get closer because it was hard to see down the hallway but didn't want to get in the way.

(What's your address?)

Sarah then provided her address.

(How many? What does he look like? Is he armed?) Then the dispatcher asked her a bunch of other questions and Sarah answered as best she could.

The dispatcher then told her they were on their way there

"Please hurry, my daughter was taken hostage." Sarah saw the commotion and knew her daughter was in deep trouble so she begged the dispatcher to tell them to hurry.

She suddenly saw her daughter run past her father as he handed her the bat and ran into Sarah's embrace with tears in her eyes. Sarah hugged her tightly back, grabbed the bat, told the dispatcher that her daughter had broken free, and her husband was wrestling with the intruder.

"I got him!"

Sarah heard her husband yelling that he got the intruder.

"My husband has the intruder pinned and he took the knife away from him." Sarah told the dispatcher.

(The police are outside now.)

The dispatcher informed Sarah and soon they heard the police come in as Sarah and Angelica walked out of the bedroom.

"Police!!" An officer yelled as he opened the door.

As soon as he flashed his light inside he saw David pinning the intruder's knife in hand.

"Keep him pinned but throw the knife to the side!" The officer ordered.

David tossed the knife to the side,

so he hurried to help along with a couple of other officers, and together they managed to flip the intruder around and cuff his hands behind his back as Sarah got closer while turning a light on.

"Is everyone ok? are there any more people in the house?" After the intruder was cuffed the officer asked them.

"My daughter was cut on her throat," David said urgently.

"EMT! It's clear, you can come in." The officer yelled outside and a paramedic came in and took a look at Angelica who came with her mother.

"It's not a deep cut she'll be fine with a bandage." The couple sighed in relief after hearing the diagnosis.

The police asked the couple some more questions and then left with the intruder.

The family hugged each other in relief, then walked to the living room to sit down together.

After basking in each other's company, happy to be okay, they eventually all calmed down and Angelica fell asleep on Sarah's lap, so the couple started talking.

"How did you know that someone was inside?" Sarah questions he husband in confusion. David is usually a heavy sleeper she can't believe he woke first before her.

"I was slapped..." David said.

"What do you mean you were slapped? Who could slap you?"

"I have an inkling that 'It' did and then told me 'Angelica, Danger'. " David explained.

"You mean... Jack?" Sarah said in realization.

"Yeah... 'It'." David incredulously said.

"His name is Jack, remember?" Sarah smacked his arm in admonishment with a stern look.

"Sorry, you're right. Jack not 'it'." David corrected himself while rolling his eyes.

"That's not it though. Now that I think back, something else happened back when Angelica was a hostage." David remembered the intruder

who started acting weird.

"I think Jack did something to him that made him release Angelica." David explained to his wife while remembering the struggle the intruder started from nowhere.

"So that's what happened, I was wondering how Angelica suddenly ran to me." Sarah paled just remembering it.

"Looks like we owe him an apology and thanks." David said remembering how they wanted to get rid of him.

"How do we do that? Another seance?" Sarah questioned him.

"I'll ask Rodriguez for advice."

David said, thinking his friend might know more about spirits and how they can thank Jack.

Jack sat with them and chuckled while he listened to the conversation, He just thought that if they forgave him for using them to level up then that is a good enough apology.

The conversation eventually died down.

"We should go to bed, with Jack watching over us we can sleep without worry." David jokingly said as he stood, picked Angelica up from his wife's lap, and then walked to the master bedroom with Sarah following behind him.

Jack who is left alone decided to check his Status.

'Not bad.'

He then thought about what he was thinking about before the interruption. He can sit and lie on the couch just fine but can also phase through things.

Jack thoughtfully held his chin. but then realized it was simple. he wanted to phase and so he did. he wanted to lie down but not affect the living world and so he did. but once he wants to affect the living world but doesn't will his energy then it defaults to phasing.

That's why he can walk on the ground without phasing, he subconsciously doesn't want to fall through but also doesn't want to affect it.

Jack's head started hurting thinking about it, so he stopped and decided to close his eyes and rest until morning.

....

A few hours later, the family was up and eating breakfast.

"How are you feeling sweetheart?" David asked his daughter worryingly.

"I'm okay, daddy." Angelica sweetly smiled at her father.

"That's good." He visibly relaxed upon hearing her.

Today is Sunday so they can relax all day before he and Angelica have work and school tomorrow.

Soon the family finished breakfast and started talking about what they should do today.

"Should we go out to somewhere fun, maybe an amusement park, and relax after last night's incident?" David suggested.

"Yes, yes, Please mommy!" Angelica begged her mother.

"Of course, let's do that, should we leave the television on for Jack so he's not bored here alone?"

Jack who was just lazing around heard her and almost thought he saw an angel descend.

'You sweet, beautiful women. you just stole my heart.' Jack looked at the angel in front of him and thought.

"Uhh sure as long as I don't get blamed for it being on." David joked.

"Who's Jack mommy?" Angelica questioned.

"Jack is your guardian spirit sweetheart, he protected you last night." Sarah made up an explanation.

"Cool! Where is he?" Angelica looked around but didn't see anyone.

"He's hiding to protect you."

"I want to see him." Angelica pouted.

Jack heard her and willed an orb to fly around her for a little before disappearing in front of her face.

"Ooooh, you're Jack!! so cute!" Angelica saw the orb fly around her and then vanish before her eyes excitedly.

The couple saw this interaction and although they were still spooked by the sudden appearance they quickly got over and smiled when they saw how happy their daughter was.

The family then packed up some stuff, left the television on, and then prepared to leave but before they left they all bid Jack goodbye.

Jack felt conflicted. Although it felt good to be acknowledged after being a spirit for so long as he checked his experience he realized the downsides as well.
