Chapter 30 - His pawn

The shock in her eyes vanished and she frowned. "She tried to kill me. I do not care if Cyrus kills her or not." She spoke sternly.

She didn't know Isabella until she arrived at the castle nor did she know the relationship between Isabella and Cyrus. It wasn't her fault, she didn't tell Isabella to act so stupid by poisoning her in front of Cyrus and saying absurd words.

"I understand that you are angry that she tried to kill you but..."

"But she is your sister." Sage interrupted and shook her head in disbelief. "Tell her to stay away from me. I have bigger things to do and think about." Sage added with a sigh and Mirabella's face lit up.

"Thank you my queen!" Charlotte, who was standing outside the room, thanked Sage.

She had eventually listened to Sage and Mirabella's conversation.

Sage sat on the bed, her arms wrapped around her body.

'I hope he listens to me.' She said in her thoughts.

Charlotte finally left the room.

Mirabella looked at Sage with interest, noting that she was paler than usual and losing weight.

"Apart from the poison.. are you.."

"I am alright." Sage interrupted and stared at her softly.

Mirabella nodded even though she knew that it was a lie. She wanted to smile but held herself.

"It is still surprising to me that Cyrus suddenly got married to the last fire mage in existence." Mirabella let out an exasperated sigh. "It is not easy to fool me."

"I am not sure anyone is fooling you. You are not supposed to put your words that way." Sage commented, her lips set into a thin line.

"Indeed," Mirabella sighed deeply. "But no one is telling me anything." She voiced.

"That is because you are not supposed to place your nose into something you do not have to know." Sage retorted.

She was obviously not liking Mirabella's words and had grown wary of her because she looked exactly like Isabella who had tried to kill her.

They were identical twins after all.

Mirabella was taken aback by Sage's words. "You are indeed a quite match for Cyrus, but you are not curious of him like I expected." She smiled.

"I do not want to know anything about him." Sage mumbled and laid on the bed covering her body with a blanket.

"But he screams mystery and of course, danger." Mirabella implied with a giggle.

Sage scoffed.

What was Mirabella up to?

"Go away please," Sage groaned at Mirabella and covered herself with a blanket.

"Do you not want to know why there are not much people in the castle? Like elders? Advisers..?" Mirabella suddenly asked.

Sage couldn't deny that she wanted to know but she couldn't help but question why Mirabella wanted her to know.

"I told you to go away, did I not?" Sage questioned groaning loudly.

"He killed them all." Mirabella revealed with a giggle.

Sage slowly removed the blanket off her face and stared at Mirabella in shock.

"What?" Sage quaked.

Mirabella smiled. "Anyone who goes close to Cyrus has a mission and that mission is to kill him." She revealed.

Sage's heart was flooded with various emotions. She wanted to wince but instead frowned at Mirabella, who was smiling strangely and staring at her.

"But you, Duchess Charlotte, Duke Sergio, Isabella.. I guess, and many others are still with him or do you have a mission to kill him?" Sage wondered smiling dryly.

"You know I am referring to you dear Sage." Mirabella breathed.

Sage tsked and placed herself in a sitting position.

"Of course I do." Sage teased.

Mirabella nodded.

"By the way, you are perfectly fine now but I have no idea why you are unusually pale." Mirabella shared stiffly. She was obviously annoyed by Sage who was starting to behave a little like Cyrus.

"Thank you." Sage feigned a smile.

Mirabella nodded once again. She had nothing more to say to Sage at that moment.

She turned away, opened the door and walked out of the room closing the door softly behind her.

Sage squealed rubbing her face.

Mirabella's questions and words made her realize deeply that her life was tumbling. Fear enveloped her.

"Secondly, You are just a pawn for Esteban and it is very sad." Cyrus's voice echoed in her head.

The Firerian dragons despised Cyrus because the eternal winter was rapidly killing them. They wanted to get rid of him to end the winter.

Tears filled Sage's eyes as her head ached badly.

She felt stupid, used and enraged.

She was a pawn and had fallen into a big trap.

"No! No! No!" She cried out and bursted into tears.

She had to go back to Credia! Her home was in danger!

She jumped out of bed and ran to the wardrobe to get a coat and mittens, but the moment she touched the handle, darkness swallowed her.

At the balcony, Cyrus was seated on the railing wearing a relaxed expression, staring at the colorful sky that spelled out twilight. He had been there for a while listening in on Mirabella and Sage's conversation.

When Sage realised she was a pawn, he nearly burst out laughing. The fire dragons had planned to get rid Sage in order to make it easier for them to conquer Credia and abduct as many mages as possible to help them conquer him. Their letter was not capable to persuade her, so he decided to send his own, which would benefit the mages, the Firerian dragons, and himself, but mostly himself.

The Firerian dragons would easily conquer Credia, he had the fire mage at his fingertips to obtain her fire core, and the mages had finally married off their princess... Cyrus wasn't sure if his plans benefited the mages, but he didn't care.

The Firerian dragons' letter was useless; they never meant what they said, which meant Sage had been Cyrus' pawn from the start, and this was only the beginning.

"A beautiful pawn." Cyrus laughed sinisterly.
