Chapter 11 - Bright side

Kingdom of Thera

Opening her eyes, Diana found her self in an unfamiliar room, the room was spacious and the walls were whites and the curtains were golden yellow. The bed in which she laid was wide that it could contain up to three grownups and it had a white bedspread and the quilt which was used to cover her had a yellow golden colour, there was a wardrobe in one corner.

"You're finally awake". Said a familiar voice, which startled her and when she turn to the direction of the voice, she saw Jason, he sat on a chair which was beside the bed she laid.

How come she didn't notice that he sat beside her when examining the room she was in?.

"Y-your highness". Diana said as she sat up but her voice came out like a croak which made her realize how dried her throat was and also how tasty for water she felt.

"Please I need water". She said this time around.

Jason nodded and stood up before disappearing from the room and appearing seconds later with a glass of water.

"Here". He said as he handed over the cup of water to Diana, who drank it like someone who hadn't drank water in a long time."Thank you". She said as soon as she finished drinking the water.

There was a peaceful silence for a short while before Diana decided to ask the question bothering her. "Where am I, your highness?". She asked curiously.

"You're in one of the guest room in the castle, Diana". Jason replied.

In the castle...when and how did she get here?. Diana thought as she tried to recall how but she couldn't.

Seeing the look on Diana's face Jason decided to elaborate. "You went unconscious from lossing so much blood from the stab wound Felicia inflicted on you during the duel, so I took you here and asked the royal physician to heal your wounds".

Diana felt so much guilt and shame overcome her as she remembered the duel, she had lost and was defeated by a half-blood sorcerer. A full-blooded sorcerer getting defeated by a half-blood sorcerer, how ironic.

"Your highness", she began. "I'm so sorry for failing you during the duel, I got defeated—"

"It's alright, Diana". Jason cut her off.

"No is not!". She exclaimed. "I got defeated by Felicia which means you would marry her and I know you don't want that". She said as guilt stabbed her once more.

Jason sighed as he ran his fingers through his hair, before giving her a tired look which made Diana suddenly notice he had dark circles around his eyes.

Wait, could it be possible that he watch over her during the time she had been unconscious?.

"How long had I been unconscious?". Diana suddenly asked.

Jason let out a tired sigh before answering, "for three days".

Diana eyes almost bulged out of it's socket, did he just say three days?, She masked her surprise before asking, "your highness, Am I wrong in guessing that you stayed beside me during the time I was unconscious?".

"No". Came his reply.

Diana gasped in shock, she suspected this, no wonder he looked this tired. "But why?, Why did you stay beside me during the time I was unconscious when you could have just asked the physician to check on me from time to time?". She just couldn't understand, why did he do it?.

"I placed you in the state you were Diana, it's because of me you got hurt, which means I am responsible for you and should watch over you until you recover". Jason replied trying to make her see reason.

Diana shook her head in disagreement. "No, you're wrong, you're not responsible for me prince Jason, and it's not your fault I got injured".

"As it is not your fault that you were defeated in the duel". He countered.

Tears gathered in her eyes, why was he so kind that he won't let her take the blame?. Why did he watch over her even after she got defeated in the duel?, The guilt came again. Diana sighed. Prince Jason was such a good man that Felicia didn't deserve to marry him, in fact she herself doesn't deserve to marry someone as kind hearted as he was.

"I know you think it's not my fault that I got defeated in the duel", she began calmly,"but did you for once think of the gravity of this situation?, for crying out loud prince Jason, it is marriage we are talking about here and this is not a child's play, it's 'till death do us part' which means you are going to spend the rest of your life with a woman you don't love and remember that according to the customs and traditions of Thera it is forbidden to have a divorce". Her voice rose at saying her last statement.

"I understand your concern Diana, but there's nothing I can do to change the situation, I have given my words to marry Felicia if she wins the duel and I cannot go back on my words as I am a man of my words". He said seriously. "But you don't have to worry so much Diana, as there are also bright sides in this situation". He added with a smile.

Bright sides?, How could there be any bright side in a situation like this?. "What are the bright sides?". She asked curiously.

"Well for starters, with this marriage I would be come king". He replied.

Diana rolled her eyes at his words. "Seriously, That was what you called a bright side in this situation?, You realize you would still become king if you marry another woman right?". A part of Diana felt a little guilty, for ruining what he saw as a bright side in marrying Felicia, but another part of her felt she did the right thing for telling him the truth.

"Patience, Diana I'm not done". He replied." You realize that once Felicia becomes Queen, she would no longer be the assistant head of royal guard, which means... you're going to get your position of the assistant head of royal guard back, is that not what you always wanted?". He questioned with a raised brow.

Diana didn't know what else to say as he was right in saying she wanted her position back, because she did.

She sighed in defeat, " well you're right". She muttered in despondency.
