Chapter 9 - Learning Spells 1

A week had passed since Memphis' crazy Awakening ceremony. Of course Ralph too had undergone his Awakening ceremony and when he met Memphis he was ready to brag about it.

"Memphis, could you believe that I awoke the Lightning element? And I have a gold Affinity for it too! I even awoke an Innate ability and an Innate body! I'm awesome right?" Memphis shook his head at his friend's antics. He didn't want to pop Ralph's balloon of happiness. He would probably have a seizure if he heard that he awoke four elements, had gold Affinity for all of them and awoke all innate characteristics on top of that!

The Lerain Mansion was very huge and had a lot of open space for training and dueling. There were five different spaces, all for training and duelling. One was underground while the other four were to the North, south east and west parts of the mansion. Currently, Memphis was with his three Uncles, Talis, Philip and Donlan with his aunt Maureen tagging along. They had decided to take some time off from their activities and teach Memphis spells.

Memphis stood opposite his uncle Donlan who had the Fire element. "Okay Memphis, listen carefully. Spellcasting is the art of forming mana into different forms and bringing it out into the open. It depends on three things; Mana, element and concentration. Watch carefully,"

Uncle Donlan opened his palm and a blazing flame covered it. He formed it into a fist and smashed it into the ground. A crater was formed where the punch landed. Memphis' eyes went wide in shock. "This spell could probably explode someone's head!" he thought.

"Today, we are going to teach you spells for Fire and Light then we will bring experts to teach you the rest. Now condense your mana and reach out to your Fire element. It is right inside you, focus and bring it out!"

Memphis furrowed his brows and tried to manipulate the mana in his body. The mana was evading his control and seemed unruly. He tried everything to bring it out; coaxing it, forcing it, willing it, but nothing seemed to work. Uncle Donlan offered advice again, "Go with the flow of your mana. Don't fight against it. Slowly allow the mana to move up into your palms. If it seems to stray, try to form it into a spiral form to make it loop back."

Memphis did as he said and to his surprise, the mana was flowing in the direction he wanted it to go. He lifted his palm and let the mana accumulate there. He began to condense it like how his uncle was saying. Suddenly, a flame burst out of his palm, shocking Memphis.

"Impressive! That is a good start!" applauded Donlan. Memphis was surprised that the flame in his palm was not hurting him. "Uncle, why is the flame not hurting me?" Memphis asked.

"Good question. The flame was formed out of your mana so naturally it won't hurt you. Put the fire away and let's do it again," said Uncle Donlan.

Memphis trained in controlling his mana flow until he was proficient enough to bring it out in its raw form or with the Fire element. "Splendid! you're a fast learner. Let's move on to spells now that you can control your mana and form it to your will," clapped Uncle Duncan.

"Now watch carefully. I'm going to teach you three Fire spells which you will learn to cast. Fireballs are form noobs and rookies I will teach you spells which are far stronger so pay attention and let me show you real fire spells. The three spells are Fiery fist, Immolation and Fiery explosion."

Uncle Donlan made his hands into fists and suddenly, Flames covered them, blazing with intensity. "Fiery Fist!" He roared, slamming his Fire fist into the chest of a nearby training dummy. The dummy's chest caved in on impact and the chest area was burnt into ashes. "Powerful!" Memphis exclaimed. His uncle grinned.

"You will like the next one even better. Immolation!" he cried, raising his palm. Fire left his palm and flew with speed, crashing another training dummy. This time, the flames begun to burn dummy upon contact and did not stop till it was totally burnt into ashes.

"Beautiful!" exclaimed Memphis. His uncle grinned but aunt Maureen clicked her tongue and muttered, "Showoff."

Then his uncle demonstrated the Flame explosion to him. A fireball formed in his uncle's hand and when he hurled it at the training dummy, it exploded in it's face, blowing its head away.

For the rest of the day, Memphis practiced those three Flame spells till he was sure he could easily cast it. He stood facing three dummies. Raising his palm, he shouted, "Immolation!" Fire streamed out of his palm like a laser and hit the first dummy, burning it till there was nothing left. Not pausing, he cast the next spell. "Flame explosion!" A fireball was hurled at the dummy and it exploded the moment it touched the dummy, blowing its head and chest part to oblivion. Finally, Memphis rushed up to the last dummy and cast his last spell. "Fiery fist!" he yelled, leaping high in the air and slamming his flame fist into the dummy, blasting it away with only its lower half intact. "Splendid!" The three uncles clapped in applause.

"Isn't it surprising? He took a few hours to learn something which took us a week to learn. I won't be surprised if he masters it within a short time," said Maureen Lerain.

"Practice what you've been thought and get a good rest. Tomorrow your aunty will continue with you. I will send Arudiz with some books for you which will help you understand more about magic and mana," said Uncle Donlan. He gave Memphis a pat on the back and Memphis run off. "Why did you teach him Intermediate and advanced spells?" Philip asked Donlan.

"I want to stimulate his potential and force him to grow. He has a bright future ahead of him so we must not pamper him like how other nobles do to their kids. He is the hope of our family and I want him to improve. He must be able to create his own fire spells from what he has learnt today and the book I'll give to Arudiz to hand over to him," said Donlan. The others nodded in agreement. Sure, Memphis was a prodigy but he needed to be motivated to learn and become stronger.

*Knock Knock*

"Who is that?" asked Memphis.

"It's Arudiz, young master Memphis. I've brought the book Lord Donlad requested to be given you," he replied. Memphis opened the door and saw Arudiz holding a book in his hands calmly. He handed it to Memphis. "Enjoy the rest of your day, young master." Arudiz left Memphis and headed off to carry out the rest of his duties.

Memphis was excited as he cradled the heavy book in his hands. He opened it excitedly and started to study deep into the night before he slept with a contented smile on his face.
