Chereads / WHAT IF I BECOME THE ENEMY / Chapter 4 - Determination

Chapter 4 - Determination

"What's wrong?" The man in front of Cyril looked at him seriously, judging for who knows what.

"I saw you captain in my memories, said: People like you are not needed in this place!" Cyril told.

He could see the man who had just entered, who was a few steps away from him gasp, startled, and quickly controlled himself. He closed his eyes and coughed slightly, signaling that Cyril shouldn't have said that.

Yet, Cyril did not want to deceive himself by being nice. He remembered in the introductory chapter about Cyril, that he almost died several times when he was a new knight. But, there was no explanation of the events that caused Cyril to almost die.

"I will leave now!" Maria bowed and excused herself to leave.

The man with the black cloak and the emblematic brooch that showed nothing waited until the door closed behind him and Maria's footsteps were completely gone. "Looks like you remember!" The man's face looked serious and stiff.

In Cyril's eyes it seemed condescending and annoying.

"Well, only up to that point do I remember. I don't remember how I got drunk and then choked to death." Cyril deliberately waved his hand in an annoying manner.

The look of disgust in the eyes of the robed man in front of him flashed again. "Just like I said before, you don't belong in this army!" he said.

"Why?"

"Because you're a commoner! This army is going to protect the royal family, do you think it's appropriate for you to show your disgusting face and attitude to the members of the royal family?"

Cyril almost forgot why he liked the character in the novel he was reading, why he became upset when his favorite character died, because the man who had the same name as him also had a difficult life like him. The difference is, Cyril in the novel world is successful, but he remains stuck in his survival routine. So when the novelist killed his favorite character, he got angry, then died.

"Is that so? Then you take care of me?" asked Cyril.

There was no change in the expression of the cloaked man in front of him. Cyril guessed that the reason for the choking death was indeed true. So he would not try to find out the truth about it again.

"Don't try too hard! Because I will try just as hard to get rid of you!" the man said to Cyril.

Cyril did not respond. Just stared at the black-robed man's step-by-step departure. It was only when the door thudded closed that Cyril cursed out loud. Not caring that the man who was the captain of the troops would hear.

"I forgot to ask if it was okay to leave this place," he complained.

No one entered the room until the light in the window disappeared. The discrimination against her was planned and approved by everyone.

"Damn nobles!" he cursed.

He quickly turned his head in shock. Maria appeared to have entered carrying a lantern with the power of a light stone. Maria stopped at the door, afraid to approach.

"I told you that I wouldn't hurt you!" exclaimed Cyril, growing annoyed.

He stood up again, feeling the cold on the soles of his feet and walked away from his bed.

"Maria!" called Cyril suddenly.

Something fell, Cyril didn't know what it was. "Yes, Lord Knight?"

"Am I the only one sleeping in this place?"

Maria did not answer. He knew she was right. This felt really annoying. He felt the same discrimination back then. The annoying friends, the teachers too. I don't know why this was the life he had to live.

"The other building is full, sir! There are other barrack rooms here too, but they are fully occupied. Since you came last, you were placed here by the captain!"

Cyril exhaled. The lantern shining with the power of the light stone Maria had brought was already lit and the room became bright. "Thank you for giving me the lantern and the heater!"

Maria was startled, almost falling over. The maidservant's face turned red. Without saying anything, Maria fled out of the barracks.

Maria's reply was unnecessary as the captain himself had already told Cyril why. Cyril didn't belong here.

"Wait!"

As Cyril ordered, Maria stopped at the door. The servant girl stared worriedly with her big eyes. "Can I go out already?"

"I'll ask the Captain," she replied.

The tingly feeling that suddenly arose in Cyril's heart made him laugh.

Maria's red face turned pale. It was as if the blood that was there was sucked out.

Cyril just watched as Maria completely came out now.

"My life is really pathetic. What do I call it?" muttered Cyril after his laughter was over.

Cyril walked to the window again, opened it, getting a burst of cold that made Cyril feel refreshed.

"Let's think about it," Cyril said to himself.

Cyril in the novel is a gifted orphan. He doesn't know who his parents are, having only been put outside the orphanage as a red baby. Then the head of the orphanage saw his talent for swords and took him to a group of mercenaries. Until the age of 12, the mercenaries made Cyril their slave and punching bag. However, one of the soldiers eventually helped Cyril to learn the basics of swordplay and he did well, developing his own skills.

Then when he was 17 years old, he got an offer to try for the test of chivalry. There he did well and was made an official knight two months ago. In his early days of training as an official knight, Cyril almost died several times in the line of duty.

"Is choking also a duty?" Cyril laughed.

Then he returned to concentrating on remembering.

His first encounter with the crown prince was when he rescued the fiancée of the heir to the throne from robbers. He escorted the heroine to the palace. The crown prince was very grateful. So was the heir's fiancée. Then, like other romance novels, Cyril and the crown prince's fiancée meet frequently. Therein lies the reader's mistake of assuming Cyril is the male protagonist. In the last chapter read by herself, she found out that because of love Cyril in the novel became the antagonist.

"Damn it, it's unbelievable!" said Cyril half-dead.

He had hoped that the character with the same name as him would be happy. At least succeed as a knight. He thought it would be a motivation for his difficult life.

"You trash writer! How can you make someone who fought so hard die in vain!"

He turned his back to the window, staring at the empty beds. He flexed her cold toes on the floor. Everything that was happening sucked. Cyril's life seemed cursed from the start. Orphaned, sold, struggling to live, and finally dying as a traitor. Not to mention the discrimination he received.

Cyril clenched his fists. Feeling annoyed and disgusted. He couldn't just lose. He would not be defeated after fighting so hard.

"No! It can't be like that!" he screeched suddenly. He looked out the window again, checking in case a passing servant would look up, gasp, and try to act like he didn't see anything. "I won't just die like that!" He determined.
