Chapter 82 - What I want best for you is your safety

For the past few days, Dexter had been calling Treasure on the phone but she wasn't picking up. He had called and texted her severally but she wasn't responding to any.

Sometimes, he thinks she was intentionally getting back at him for not answering her calls at first. The only reason he was ignoring her calls in the first place was that he didn't want to come in between her relationship.

He thought she was dating that psychopath that beat him up the last time but now he understood that he was just a sick weirdo. He was glad to know that she was single which means that he could talk to Treasure whenever he wanted. He regretted not asking her if she had a boyfriend in the first place instead of ghosting her.

However, Treasure wanted to avoid Dexter completely and by that, she was doing him a huge favor.

She chose to avoid Dexter because she knew what her stalker was capable of. She didn't want her stalker to find out that she was friends with Dexter but unfortunately for her, it was too late. Her stalker already knew about their friendship.

It was 6: 30 in the evening and Dexter was taking a walk to Treasure's house. Luckily for him, he knew where her house was because he has escorted her to her house before.

He was curious to see Treasure and talk to her and also because he misses her. Besides, she looked really happy the day she met him at the supermarket until he talked about the strange man.

Due to how frightened Treasure was at the supermarket after hearing about her stalker, Dexter suspected that she knew something about the strange man that attacked him. He wanted answers so he could help her in any way he can. He saw fear in her body when he described the strange man and since then, she has been avoiding him. He knew something was up with Treasure and he wanted to get to the bottom of it.

Shortly, Dexter arrived at the doorstep of Treasure's house and he knocked on the door. He was on a red oversized hoodie and black trousers looking smart and handsome as usual

In less than a minute, Treasure's elder brother, Kim came out, standing by the door which was half open.

He was shirtless and barefooted wearing an ash color joggers. He had some creepy tattoos of snakes, and scorpions and some write-ups on his chest and arms.

He was holding a cigarette in his fingers, smoking profusely whereas Dexter could almost throw up due to the cloud of smoke coming out from Kim's mouth and nose.

"ahem ahem" Dexter coughed fanning the smoke off his face with his hand and Kim rolled his eyes.

"whatchu want?" Kim said to Dexter, sneering at him because he thought Dexter was judging him.

"I came to see Treasure" Dexter replied wondering who he was.

Kim is just a 24-year-old man, almost the same age as Anne. He's a gangster who has an emo look and it was impossible to ever think he was Treasure's brother because of how different they were.

"Why do you want to see her?" Kim asked

"She's my friend, and I wanted to see her… Who are you anyway?" Dexter asked Kim.

Kim took in his cigarette and breathe out the smoke. The smoke got into Dexter's eyes and Dexter was on the verge of reminding Kim that smokers are liable to die young.

"The name is Kim, I'm Treasure's elder brother. Now tell me who you really are because my sister doesn't have any friends" Kim said.

'This is Treasure's brother?' Dexter asked himself in his head because it was hard to believe.

"well… my name is Dexter, I used to go to the same school as Treasure," He said.

"Treasure, Treasure" Kim whispered to himself, checking out Dexter. He saw him as a good-looking guy who looked responsible but he never thought that his sister would be friends with this handsome young man.

"Nah… my sister literally has no friends not to mention, GUY friends," Kim said and was about to shut the door close.

"wait! I'm really Treasure's friend" Dexter said and Kim groaned loudly, opening the door.

"Dude, you gotta leave my house. If you are really friends with my sister, she would've at least talked about you even once… Or are you a fraud? Or you're just a bad guy" Kim said vehemently.

Dexter felt a little sad that Treasure has never spoken about him. The reason is that Treasure feels that telling her brother about who she was talking to is a waste of time. Kim is a terrible listener who only invests his time in drugs and women.

"Listen, man, I'm not a bad person or a fraud… just hold up for a second," Dexter said as he reached for his pockets and brought out his ID card, and showed it to Kim.

"look at this, my name is Dexter Robyn Stewart and I'm a detective. I work at NYPD and my ID right here proves that I'm not a fraud" He said. He wanted to prove to Kim that he was genuine and not a scam. He guessed that Kim was only being a 'protective' brother to Treasure.

"FUCK!!!" Kim exclaimed with a serious face looking at Dexter's ID card.

"So… so you…you work with the cops? For… for real??" Kim stuttered anxiously but Dexter misinterpreted it as Kim being surprised he was really a detective.

"Of course," Dexter smiled feeling proud of himself and he kept his ID card back in his pocket.

Kim panicked immediately and Dexter wondered why. Kim doesn't like anything that has to do with the cops because he knows he's a dirty criminal.

"Treasure doesn't live here," he said in a high-pitched voice and shut the door in Dexter's face.

Dexter gasped as soon as Kim shut the door closed on his face. "what's with him?" he muttered with a confused look.

He knew very well that this was Treasure's house and Kim was obviously lying just to avoid him but why?

Anyways, Dexter heaved a sigh and walked out.

"Dexter!" Treasure yelled Dexter's name and Dexter turned his back and saw Treasure standing at her doorstep.

There was a sweet smile on Dexter's face as soon as he saw Treasure and he approached her. Fortunately for him, he hasn't gone that far so he was able to hear his name.

Treasure was in a sky-blue flare dress and her hair was left center-parted. She looked so pretty and the medicated glasses she was wearing made her cuter.

Kim didn't want Treasure to come out to see Dexter after finding out he was a detective but Treasure disobeyed. He hated the fact that his sister was friends with someone who works with the cops because he's a criminal and also a former member of the black blade.

Treasure didn't have the heart to let Dexter walk away after he had come to her house to see her.

"That was my idiot brother Kim," Treasure said to Dexter pointing at the closed door. "He must've acted weird and I'm sorry for that"

"He was really weird" Dexter chuckled softly.

"Dexter why are you here?" she asked.

"To see you, I wanted us to have a talk… I feel like you're avoiding me and I wanna know why," he said.

"I've been busy," Treasure said.

"hmm… too busy to pick up a phone call? or reply to my text? that's impossible" Dexter said.

"See who's talking" Treasure mumbled but Dexter heard her and he figured she was just using his words against him.

"I get it, I did that too." Dexter sighed. "The truth is I didn't pick up any of your calls because I was ignoring you not because I was busy."

"so why did you lie to me?" she said.

"I'm sorry… I should've just told you the truth. I thought you were in a relationship and it wouldn't be fair if I was you know... too close to you" he said.

"It's okay, I understand... but don't think I'm avoiding you because I am upset with you, I'm not even upset with you, to begin with," Treasure said.

"so what's up?" Dexter curiously asked.

Treasure took a deep breath. "I don't want us to be friends anymore," she said in a low tone.

"What? Why?" Dexter was confused and surprised at the same time. "wait a sec, is it because your brother doesn't like me?"

"no, it's not that" she shook her head.

"then what is it? Why should we stop being friends?" He said.

"it's for your own good Dexter, I want you to stay far away from me," Treasure said in a serious tone.

"Not until you give me a good reason for that," Dexter said firmly and Treasure slapped her forehead out of frustration.

Dexter walked closer to her "Tell me, …is it because of that man? The man with the eye patch who asked me to stay away from you?"

"good night Dexter!" Treasure said, immediately turning her back to leave.

"Treasure please wait" He held her hand, stopping her from leaving.

"let go!" she said.

"No! tell me what's wrong so I can help you… Remember, I am your friend" he said with reassurance.

Treasure turned to face Dexter and he let go of her hand.

"If you're my friend then you have to listen to me and stay away from me. I'm begging you Dexter" she pleaded, looking into Dexter's eyes.

"or else what? that man is going to attack me again?" He scoffed.

"he attacked you?" Treasure exclaimed, looking at Dexter with wide eyes.

"Oh, God! no" she whispered, massaging her temple.

"Treasure, please tell me what's up with that strange man. You can talk to me and I'll be sure to listen." Dexter said, also changing the topic after seeing that Treasure was worried he got attacked.

"I'm sorry but I'd rather not." She sighed.

Although, deep down, she wanted to open up to Dexter and tell him everything that has been going on with her life. Her nightmares and her texts with her stalker but she couldn't because she was scared. She didn't want Dexter to get involved for his own safety.

Too bad for Dexter, he didn't know how to convince Treasure to tell him what the problem really was. He wanted to know who that strange man was and why he was threatening him to stay away from Treasure. He wanted to know the connection between Treasure and the strange man.

"Well, uhm… it's okay if you don't feel comfortable sharing anything with me but I still want us to be friends. We don't have to talk about that man until you feel comfortable enough to tell me." Dexter said but he felt disappointed that Treasure didn't trust him enough to tell him what the problem was.

"but it shouldn't come in between our friendship right?" he added.

Treasure leaned closer to Dexter and hugged him with her face buried in his chest. She suddenly got emotional as Dexter was eager to know if she was really okay. The way he kept reminding her that he was her friend made her feel important and Treasure wasn't used to that.

Dexter could hear Treasure sobbing silently and he hugged her even more tightly, gently patting her back to console her.

"It's okay, it's okay" he whispered to her. He didn't understand why she was crying but he just wanted to be there for her.

After three minutes of sobbing in his chest, Treasure disengaged from the hug and Dexter removed her glasses which were now wet due to her tears and he cleaned the tears under her eyes with his thumbs.

He dried up her glasses and wore them back on her pretty face.

"thank you" Treasure muttered and he nodded.

She felt a little embarrassed and shy meanwhile, Dexter just wanted her to be comfortable with him. He liked her a lot and he wanted her to be okay at all times.

Dexter lifted her chin "it's okay, just let me be there for you" He said softly and Treasure nodded her head.

"Dexter, that man is very crazy and dangerous and I don't you to ever get involved with him... What I want best for you is your safety because you're the only friend I have" she said earnestly.

"I understand," Dexter said

"goodnight Dexter, thanks for coming to see me" she gave a faint smile.

"Anytime Treasure, have a good night" he gave her a flying kiss and she chuckled softly.

She got inside her house and Dexter left too.
