Chapter 9 - CLASS PARTY

Lights, champagne, snacks and a DJ were being put in place by the time we arrived at the cabins. They had already decorated the roofs of the cabins by the time we had arrived.

"oh....my...God" Wendy said as she got down from the bus. The decorator had caught the fancy of the queen of scrutiny. He or she must be feeling good about his or her work right now.

"This is very nice," Danny said as he got down and twirled on the spot to have the full scope of the decorations.

The setting was of a kind of tropical theme and the decor didn't fail to show this. The decorator put a lot of thought into this. It was very nice.

There was this calm trap music that was playing in the background, you know, just blend in the back while resonating with the calm of the moment.

I am not a prophet but I know that we all were wowed, except Mr Moore. My best guess is that he already knew about it and that was the reason why he made us trek that distance in the first place. He was just trying to kill time for the sake of the decorators.

Nice job if you ask me.

There was a sound like a screech from the sound system before the mic came on.

"Attention, students may I have your attention?" said a voice from the sound system. The system had been wired such that the person could be heard from all over this cabin village without any hassle.

"We are going to be throwing a small "Welcome to the Serengeti" party in your honour"

The students went wild with cheering and shouts.

"the party is going to be starting at 10 in the night and so you guys should go to bed and rest up for the party."

"the party also requires that you come along with your date, this is going to be the night of your lives," the voice said as it turned off the mic and the music resumed.

The students were pretty happy to hear this and some immediately went about finding who their date would be for the party.

"wow... a date uhn?" Danny asked as he swung his arms over my shoulder and winked.

"I wonder who yours will be?" he asked as he looked into the sky in fake concern. This was one of those moments where I just wish I didn't know what he was talking about or insinuating.

"yeah so do I?" I replied as I started heading towards the cabin with Danny just giggling behind me.

"but seriously, who knows? This could be the night of your life" he said before deviating to a stand that had snacks.

I guess I just wasn't too interested in snacks at that moment or maybe I was having other things on my mind. I had no idea if or how I was going to ask Jay Jay to go to the party with me.

I was very sure that even if I didn't want to go to the party, Danny would ensure that he violated my right to peace all in a bid to ensure that I don't miss the opportunity to live my life.

He would say:

"I didn't say you should do anything stupid or irrational, but don't let opportunities keep passing you by"

And then he would leave me to ruminate on his words which, so far so good, I have never heeded.

"oh my God, yes"

I turned around to see Curry ask a girl to the party as his date. For some reason, the sight was a pretty one.

She was all up in his arms and his gang was applauding him and his newfound date. The moment was one that you would love to have framed and hung on the wall of your living room. A reminder of how beautiful love could be.

"pretty sight isn't it?" said a voice from right behind me.

I was spooked by the voice that came from behind me. I turned and saw a long-time neighbour.

"Oh, hi," I said with my hand on my chest

"you scared me!"

"oh, I didn't mean to" she apologized with a soft voice that seemed rather soothing.

"It's fine," I said as I stood straight and continued to watch Curry and the girl, Lisa.

There was a long and awkward silence as she joined me in watching the sight.

"so..." she said. I guess she was trying to initiate a conversation with me. I normally wouldn't budge but I had a few questions for her so I just had to play along.

"yeah, I didn't catch your name," I said with one of my hands at the back of my head.

"Oh, my name is Camilla" she replied as we started to walk down the road of the cabin village.

The cabin village was starting to look like a fair that was crossbred with a forest or something of that nature. The colour scheme was that of a pale yellow or the kind of yellow that you get when you finish drying hay and a touch of green.

"so what's your story?" I asked her as we stopped by for ice creams. She looked at me through her glasses and then took a spoonful of the ice cream.

"uh, what's there to know?" she asked with her eyes fixed on her ice cream.

"Anything you feel is vital for me to know about you" I replied.

"Well, my name is Camilla Kareem and I am from Botswana," she said before looking up at me. I guess she was just trying to read my facial expression to know whether to continue or not.

"oh wow," I said in marvel at the information I had just received. It turns out that she is also black American, although it doesn't show in her complexion or her facial structure.

Let's pause and describe her a bit so you can understand what I am talking about. This Camilla is a tan-skinned girl of average height and good features. She uses glasses and if you asked me, she looks more like someone of Mexican origin than someone from Botswana.

"Sorry, but you don't look like someone of Botswana origin," I said. I guess I just wanted to be sure of the facts and not busy myself guessing and assuming

She laughed a bit at the statement that I had uttered and for some reason, I was also laughing with her.

"is it because of my colour?" she asked before resuming her laughter.

"alright let me explain" she started as we reached the centre of the village where the stage for the concert was situated.

"my father is a proper Botswana man, but my mum however is from Mexico. that's why I came out looking Mexican" she said.

"then I am pretty sure that your mum is a really strong woman then," I said as I took in the last scoop of my ice cream. We both stopped at some restricting railings that had been set to prevent anyone that would want to get close to the stage from doing so.

The stage was very pretty, it had everything that one would need for a concert and it was very well-lit.

We stood by adoring the stage when a man in a black suit approached us.
