Chapter 4 - Who Is She?

Carter's POV:

I am trying my hardest to keep my eyes on the road instead of my beautiful mate next to me, as we are driving to the pack house where my parent's live. I have been in an internal battle all day with Jaxxon my wolf. All he wants is to hold her and be with her, but I know how that would turn out. She is human, she doesn't understand the connection we have. And the last thing I want to do is force it on her before she is ready, she would resent me and I would never be able to forgive myself.

I think back on earlier today when I saw her gracefully jump out of her truck in front of the diner. I had that feeling every werewolf talks about when their mate is coming near. My heartbeat picked up, senses heightened by a thousand, when her truck slowed to park. The sweetest smell of vanilla and coconut filled the air. My Beta Jared sensed the change in me, and the rest of the guys did too soon after. All of our eyes were locked in, waiting to see who got out of the truck.

And then there she was. At first, we only saw her dark long hair laying flat against her back, swaying as she turned her head and body. She was wearing dark bootcut jeans that fit snug around her perfectly round but small ass, and a white cropped tank top tight against her skin. She reached for the back door of the truck, and I felt my stomach drop wondering who would be getting out next. All of a sudden, the largest german shepherd I have seen jumps onto the ground, and sits perfectly in front of her with ears perked and alert. His eyes locked onto her every move, just as mine were.

When she turned we could see her face, and there was no one more beautiful. I glanced over to see the guys with me just as intrigued as I was, and let out a low growl I thought only they would hear. Her dog snapped his attention to us across the street, positioning himself in a protective stance in front of her. The hair between his shoulder blades, and along his spine rose, barring his teeth at us. She glanced at him and looked in our direction, letting out a small laugh. We all heard her whisper, ""Buddy I think when I told you we are done with men you took me a little too seriously." The guys next to me start to laugh.

"Alpha I think you'll have some competition there," Jared laughs. I shot him a glare and we watched her walk into the diner. I mind linked them to follow. I didn't want to scare her, but I couldn't walk away from my mate only minutes after seeing her for the first time. It had already taken all of my strength to not run right up and pull her into a hug.

Once we got into the diner, I saw her sitting at a table along the back wall. After a few minutes our eyes met. I instantly felt Jaxxon spinning with excitement. She has the bluest eyes I have ever seen, with a dark navy ring around the edges. Her long dark eyelashes cover the color unless she is looking directly at you. Her skin is a tanned olive tone, so smooth and flawless. I couldn't look away, and I saw her cheeks become flushed with red. She looked down and continued to eat her burger. I saw her slip a piece of bacon under the table to the dog and I laugh. He may be some real competition I thought at the time.

I watched her out of the corner of my eye, and I could see the wheels spinning in her head. Her brows furrowed as she mixed her chocolate milkshake with the straw. She is deep in thought about something. Her and the dog got up and start walking out, I made a low clicking noise I knew the pup would hear. He happily booped his nose to the back of Jared's arm causing him to laugh. She blushed again and Jared pets the dog, as I so obviously stared directly at her. She left and Jaxxon is telling me to follow her. But I didn't. Not yet at least.

The guys and I finished up our food and head back to our trucks, I started driving towards home coincidentally in the same direction she left in. As I reached our town I looked over at the pack hospital my mother runs. She is also a human. She met my father, the Alpha at the time, after she finished medical school and was traveling for residency. I stopped in my tracks as I see my mate's truck in front of the hospital. I mind linked the nurse who sits at the front desk asking if she had seen her come in. She responded that she was looking for a job and was meeting with my mother in just a moment. I let her know that she was my mate, and a human, so she was not aware yet. The nurse said she would pass it on to my mother before she introduced the two. I drove home, not sure what the outcome of the conversation would be, but hopeful it would be in my favor.

An hour or two later, my father arrived at the door of the cabin with a smile on his face. That you don't see often. He informed me that my new found mate will be staying in the cabin for a while, as she gets situated in town. As he was talking to me I can smell sweet vanilla and coconut nearing, and I reached for the door before she could knock. We stand there staring at each other once again, before my dad interrupted and introduced himself.

"Hi I am Myranda Ross" she said with a smile. Myranda. Jaxxon howled within me, begging me to reach out and hold her. Her voice is so sweet, and she holds herself with confidence although I could hear her heartbeat racing with nerves. We walked through the house, most of which is a blur as my eyes never left her.

We walked out to the truck to grab her things, and our hands met reaching for the handle. The sparks flew between us where we touched, and her breath hitched causing Jaxxon to surface. My dad left and we walked into the cabin, she went straight into my bedroom. They clearly did not tell her I live here too. We talk back and forth for a minute, I let her know I would be moving to my parent's house, but she insisted I stay. I gave her space although I did not want to, and take a seat on the couch.

Denver, her dog, hopped up next to me and curls up next to my side. He looked at me, with an interest in his eye. I know he knows what I am. And he probably knows who she is to me. As she emerged from her room some time later, she rolled her eyes at Denver cuddled up with me. I patted the couch next to me and she sits down, her face lights up at the show on TV, NCIS. After a bit more small talk, we left to head to my parents for dinner.

Here we are. The drive went quick as I relived the day in my memories. This has been the first day in a very long time that I have been happy. Content. That's what finding your mate does to you. But of course the Moon Goddess presented me with the complications of a human mate. And I knew it would not be anything close to easy getting to the point of being together. She is perfect, but I can tell there is something within her she is holding onto, or maybe holding back. Glancing at her one more time before putting the truck in park, she look back with a sparkle in her eye. Oh I am in trouble.
