Chapter 5 - Hunger

I looked in the mirror and tried to fix my hair. With the humid and warm air blowing in it all day, It was pretty much unsalvageable. I sighed and raised an arm before I realized that I needed a quick shower.

I hurried and grabbed a new pair of fresh underwear, blue jeans, and a burgundy sweater and laid them on the bed before rushing to shower. It didn't take long before I stepped out of the shower.

I wrapped the white towel around my body, turned the doorknob to the right, the cold metal nearly stinging my skin, and pulled the door open. My eyes widened in pure shock.

"What are you doing here?" Water was still dripping from my body as I stood in the doorway, my black hair sticking to my wet skin.

He was standing at my desk, eyeing the several paintings and sketches scattered across the wooden surface. His dark curls fell to his face as he looked down, almost concealing his features.

"You were gone for more than a minute." he simply stated. Was he worried about me?

I grabbed the towel tighter, the top part of my breasts clearly visible and dewy with the running droplets of water.

Tearing his attention from the desk, he looked at me and I could have sworn something changed in his face. His silver eyes gleamed even brighter than the moon.

"I meant that I'd be out soon." I frowned. He just stood there, studying me, his eyes traveled from my wet hair down to my toes. His eyes darkened and I did not know if I was breathing anymore. I felt naked, so naked for my liking. With only a soaked towel shielding my skin from his hungry eyes.

He took a step forward, then another, the sound black boots tapping against my wooden floor rang through the room, carefully closing the distance between us. My heart pounded louder with each step. He stopped right before me, I had to glance up to look into his eyes. Lust. I could see it hidden in there, and I was sure my eyes screamed it.

Slowly, he closed his eyes, and his nostrils flared. He took a deep breath and his eyes were once again locked on me.

"You smell absolutely... exquisite." His silver eyes darted to my lips. I did not dare speak, my voice died in my throat.

"I'll be downstairs." I could barely hear his thick, low voice over my heart drumming in my ears. He spoke, but it sounded more like a growl. As if he was trying his hardest to control himself. His hot breath danced against my wet, flushed skin.

I stared deep into his unusual eyes. Then glanced down, a silver necklace rested peacefully around his strong neck and against the hard of his chest. I closed my eyes, trying to steady my quick shallow breaths, the smell of pine filled the air. I swallowed, a familiar ache burnt inside me and I had to push my thighs together. If he was to touch me he would literally feel how hot my skin glowed.

He stepped back, then headed to the door. I watched him leave, the tight black t-shirt hugging every toned muscle of his broad back.

Maybe befriending him was not the brightest of my ideas. He left, but I was too dumbfounded to move an inch. I stood there, the room felt so empty with him there.

Moments later, I headed downstairs, pushing the sweater's zipper up, I scanned the small room and fiound no sign of him. I, however, heard a noise coming from my kitchen. I followed the noise until I finally saw him. He was looking through my pantry, a confused look on his face.

"I seriously can not let out of my sight for one second before you go through my stuff." I said with a small scrunchie between my teeth as I push my hair up, tying the elastic band tightly around it. I felt so comfortable with him there, so at ease.

He closed the cupboard, "I was bored." He said as he turned around, his eyes met mine, and a small smile spread across his face.

"What?" I raised a brow in confusion.

He leaned against the fridge, arms crossed.

"You look nice."

I was silent, trying so hard not to giggle like a girl in love. "Oh, shut up." I scoffed, but deep inside I was ready to climb to the roof and shoot to the skies.

"I liked it better when you were practically naked, though."

I had to pretend not to hear him, "so, where do you wanna go?" I took a seat at the little table in the middle of the kitchen. He does the same, sitting right across from me.

"You said we would go grasp a coffee or something."

"Grab. Coffee." I emphasized. He raised a hand, pressing it against his forehead, shaking his head he sighed, "I don't understand you, humans, anymore. You come up with the weirdest terms each day."

"Us humans? As if you are not one?" I felt as if I already knew the answer to that.

"I keep telling you what I am, you just do not seem to accept it." With that he leaned back, crossing both his legs on the wooden table. His black boots were practically in my face.

"So, you mean to tell me you're nonhuman? Your father is the God of death, and you are here to do his work?" I tried my best to hide the mockery in my words.

"I am here to finish his job for him, yes." He sounded deeply annoyed.

"Okay, and what does that make you?"

"Rey." He simply stated. "Just Rey." He looked at me, I could see a deep sadness burning in his eyes. He looked... Lonely? In need of a friend? Someone to talk to? I got to my feet, the sound of the chair pushing against the hard floor echoed through the room.

"Let's go."

I decided to take Rey to the closest coffee shop, it was only about ten minutes away from where I lived. I usually went there with Lily when we both craved caffeine in the middle of the night.

I did not say anything since we left a while ago, and neither did he, and to be completely honest, I found the silence comforting.

I glanced up at him, he seemed as lost in his own thoughts as I was in mine. The faint light emerging from the several light poles lining the street cast a shadow on his fine features. His lustrous eyes, framed with thick brown lashes, his full luscious lips slightly parted, and his defined cheekbones added to his heavenly beauty. My hand ached. I had to paint him, whatever happened, I had to paint him. I knew he would make a masterpiece. He was literally flawless.

I found myself wondering what he thought of me. I mean I was not by any means the prettiest girl in town, I was in no way 'girly.' I shook my head, why was I wondering about his opinion of me? It did not matter. Not to me, and certainly not to him. My chest tightened at this thought.

"You're awfully quiet." I decided to break the silence. He hummed peacefully. "What is going on through that head of yours?" I mused.

"It's just that I was never able to be this close to a human, let alone go drink coffee, or whatever you want us to do, with them." I felt my heart skip a beat.

"I am really glad I got to meet you." He darted his gaze to me, and I nearly jumped.

"It's by far the nicest thing Father has ever done for me, even if it was not his intention."

"Tell me more about him," I did not know if by my question I would be crossing any lines, I hesitated for a moment, he did not seem to react so I knew it did not upset him, "your father, I mean." I added.

He smiled but it was hiding a feeling of sadness behind it, a small sigh escaped his chest, "You would not want to know, trust me."

I was quiet for another moment. Enjoying the cold breeze gently caressing my skin. The young man's curls moved lazily in the crisp night's gentle wind.

"Avalyn."

"Hmm?"

"My name. It's Avalyn." It was the same in which he had told me his.

"I know." Was all he said.

"Are you really not a human?" I found myself asking. His eyes darted towards me, I felt a shiver run down my spine. His gaze was unbearably intense.

"I am not."

"Then what are you?"

"I am what you call the grim reaper."

I always thought the grim reaper was the God of death. He, however, claimed that it was actually his father, not him. "You don't look like a grim reaper, though."

"Ah. I left my bony hands and deadly scythe at home, I apologize." He smirked. I got goosebumps all over my skin and I had to tell myself it was just the night's cold breeze.

"That imagery is exactly how you think we look, It is how you view us."

"You see, you associate us with fear, with illness, and with decay, hence, the bones. We do exist and we are everywhere around you, yet we remain skillfully hidden from your eyes, that is where the 'hooded robe' falls in place."
