Chapter 4 - Corrupted System, 4.

Josh and Spencer shared a multitude of experiences, including the pain of loss, the weight of grief, the acceptance of resignation, and the resilience of overcoming. Despite being Janine's brother, Josh made the difficult choice to step aside, allowing her to pursue happiness without the burden of their shared trauma. It was a decision rooted in love, and Josh knew deep down that he had made the right sacrifice for his sister's well-being.

Josh's life had been shaped by profound emotions and intricate feelings, causing him to analyze himself like a ticking time bomb. Once a rebellious and chaotic soul, he had matured into an adaptable adult over time.

Spencer, his loyal friend, and brother figure, had saved him from his own self-destructive tendencies on numerous occasions. Josh understood that he could always rely on Spencer's unwavering support, no matter the circumstances.

With a law degree from Stanford and a minor in business, Josh established Smith Private Security, becoming a prominent figure in the financial sector. He lived by the motto "nothing to lose," embracing risks without hesitation. While many perceived him as a high-stakes player, the truth was that nobody eagerly awaited his return home each night.

Despite his professional accomplishments, Josh wrestled with feelings of loneliness and a yearning for love. He attended weddings, including Spencer's, yet couldn't shake the lingering belief that no one would truly love him or be willing to give their lives for him.

In his own eyes, he resembled an aged property, concealing hidden flaws that only surfaced after purchase, leading to regrets. However, beneath those imperfections, he remained a sharp and skilled individual with a wealth of experiences that few could match.

His life had taken him to numerous places, and he had lived through various personas. First, as a mercenary, where each day brought something new, and later as a gangster, with Spencer facilitating legal arrangements and providing secret services to the government. Josh's journey had been filled with unexpected twists and turns, and he had learned to adapt to whatever challenges came his way.

As Josh sat on the plane, en route from London to Sydney, a sense of drowsiness washed over him, prompting deep introspection. Thoughts of his mortality the passage of time, and his pervasive sense of solitude consumed his mind.

As Josh sat in his seat, contemplating the uncertainties of love and companionship, a somber realization washed over him. However, he knew he couldn't allow these thoughts to consume him. There was a business to run and a life to be lived, and he couldn't afford to be dragged down by such musings.

Deep down, Josh acknowledged his complex nature, harboring a multitude of contradictions and hidden depths. He had weathered countless storms in his life, emerging from each one stronger and more resilient. While he may not have had all the answers, he trusted that he was on the right path, and that was enough to keep him moving forward.

Spencer occupied a separate seat nearby, their connection not as close as it once was. Little did they know, their destinies were about to intertwine in a tragic twist of fate that would leave no survivors.

Recalling the memories of Spencer's beloved wife, Emma, Josh couldn't help but harbor a hint of resentment towards her. He felt Emma's acceptance of Spencer's love was selfish, as her own demise nearly claimed the life of their dear friend.

However, Spencer, driven by noble sentiments, had endured everything life threw at him, including the pains of love and the inevitability of death. He remained devoted to Emma until her final breath, and Josh couldn't help but wonder if the passage of time had ever truly healed Spencer's wounds.

Amidst their contemplation, the pilot's voice crackled over the intercom, delivering a chilling message to the passengers:

"Ladies and gentlemen, we have encountered a severe cold air mass ahead. Please remain seated with your seatbelts fastened. Thank you for your cooperation."

Minutes later, the plane plummeted into turbulence, unlike anything they had experienced before. Violent shudders wracked the aircraft as it struggled to maintain stability. The sudden loss of cabin pressure triggered the automatic release of oxygen masks, their descent accentuated by the thunderous impact against the fuselage.

In that harrowing moment, Spencer felt as if his time had come. He had fulfilled the promise he made to Emma – to embrace the life bestowed upon him until fate itself intervened. With unwavering resolve, he surrendered himself to the judgment of a higher power, accepting whatever lay ahead.

Josh, contemplating his own journey, reflected on a life that had swung from the depths of villainy to redemption. Having indulged in the luxuries of fine boats, cars, and mansions, he had found solace and peace in his final moments.

The aircraft, caught in a treacherous state of Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL), succumbed to the overpowering forces of nature. The atmospheric pressure plummeted, leaving the passengers gasping for breath. With a bone-chilling crash, the plane met its tragic end, plunging into the depths of the unforgiving Indian Ocean, where no one would emerge alive.

In those fleeting moments of chaos and desperation, the passengers' senses were overwhelmed. The deafening cacophony of screeching metal, desperate prayers, and frantic cries for mercy melded together. The acrid scent of burning fuel mingled with the saltiness of the ocean, assaulting their nostrils. The violent impact unleashed a wave of disorientation as bodies collided with unforgiving surfaces, causing pain to reverberate through their bones.

As the wreckage sank deeper into the abyss, the darkness swallowed their hopes and dreams, leaving only a profound silence in its wake.

Date: 06/28/20xx

The news of the tragic accident sent shockwaves through various media outlets. Headlines detailed the heart-wrenching event that unfolded in the depths of the Indian Ocean.

"Today, on 6/28/20xx, an Airbus A380 carrying 380 passengers disappeared in the Indian Ocean. The sudden emergence of a massive cold air mass, accompanied by fierce winds and ominous clouds, is believed to be the cause of this devastating incident."

At airports in Sydney and London, grief-stricken family members gathered, seeking solace and information about their loved ones who were aboard the ill-fated flight. The search for survivors and the wreckage of the aircraft continued tirelessly, with hopes of finding answers and closure.

As Josh took in his surroundings, his thoughts were consumed by the plane and the fate of his companion, Spencer. The surrounding environment seemed alien and surreal, like nothing he had ever witnessed before.

His heart raced with a mix of fear and determination as he spotted Spencer lying a few meters away, partially obscured by a gentle mist. Struggling against his own disorientation, Josh mustered every ounce of strength to crawl towards his friend.

With a desperate urgency, Josh shook Spencer, willing him to wake from his slumber. Gradually, Spencer's eyes fluttered open, and he groggily whispered, "Josh, am I in heaven or hell?" The weight of their situation pressed heavily upon them, prompting Josh to ask with a grave tone, "What happened to the plane? What about the other passengers?"

Spencer could only shake his head weakly, his voice strained as he replied, "I don't know." As they supported each other to their feet, their attention was drawn to a figure in the distance. Despite his own struggle to walk, the man seemed to hold the possibility of answers, urging Josh and Spencer to approach him cautiously.

The man turned his head, attempting to focus his gaze on the approaching duo. "I had a feeling something significant was about to occur. After all, how else would I end up on the same flight as Spencer Walker and Josh Smith?" he mused, eliciting wary glances between Josh and Spencer.

Spencer's quick wit kicked in, and he retorted, "Astra, consider yourself under arrest!" Astra appeared bewildered by the accusation. "Arrest? It seems I stumbled upon something of great importance in this place. Is it NASA, the FBI, or perhaps Area 51?"

The enigmatic location left Josh and Spencer grappling with the same question: "Where were they?"

Abruptly, the expansive environment seemed to contract, shrinking to a mere 20-meter radius, causing an unsettling sense of vulnerability to wash over them. They instinctively assumed defensive postures, bracing themselves for the unknown.

Then, a mysterious mechanical voice resonated throughout the space, its words carrying a profound message. "In sharing the flame of a lit candle with one that has burned out, nothing is lost. Through shared light, a brighter path is illuminated."

The voice continued, revealing the nature of their unexpected journey. "Welcome, Josh Smith and Spencer Walker, to the 'Two Emperors and their Loves' system. You have entered the realm ABO." The bewildered friends exchanged puzzled glances, their minds buzzing with questions and curiosity.

In a moment of revelation, a hidden door materialized before them, unveiling the images of two couples. The mechanical voice returned, sounding urgent and distorted, "Intruder detected. Intruder detected. System corrupted. Self-destruct in 20 seconds."

Starting countdown: 20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14... Without a moment to spare, Astra made a frantic dash towards the door, her urgency evident as she sprinted ahead.

With the countdown reaching 7, they propelled themselves through the door, their hearts pounding with a mix of fear and anticipation, unsure of what awaited them on the other side.
