Chapter 66 - A War in the Trees

His boots stepped foot back on the ground, exiting the elevator and seeing his soldiers start returning to formation, standing by with their shields and swords in hand.

"Joken, call on the leaders of the formations." Cadin ordered. Joken stepped forward in front of them and began shouting different names. Fractis, Kolek, Pontim, Regon, and Norec.

The five men stepped away from their units, approaching Joken quickly.

"Soldiers, as the leaders of your formations, we will begin moving towards the designated area north of here, once we reach there, you are to move your forces and surround the area on all sides. Once this is done, on my order you will open fire at the platforms above, grabbing the attention of the soldiers. You will continue this until I give the order to stop and to advance upwards, kill as much as you can but stay behind trees and shields. Return to your formations and relay the order to the rest of your men." After speaking the leaders ran back to their formations, in the bushes or in the open path.

Cadin turned behind him to the escorts already waiting for him, mounting their horses. The two mounted their own steeds, Cadin turned to the group of horsemen.

"We will make our way to the trees and advance on them, once we enter on the platforms, kill as many as possible in a short time, to cause chaos in the defender's hearts. Let us begin moving." The horsemen began moving into formation.

In a few minutes the unit began moving again, soldiers marched in sync, leaving the camp and onward to the enemy camp for battle.

Thoughts ran around in Cadin's mind, observing the trees and bushes around him, catching glimpses of the soldiers on both sides beyond the green.

The army continued moving, a growing feeling of vigilance embedded into the soldiers with Cadin still looking forward.

While they continued, Foren jumped down from above, prompting them to stop. Foren approached Cdin.

"The enemy is ahead of us, prepare your soldiers, we will await above once your soldiers have begun assaulting the top. One of my men also said that all of the soldiers are posted above in the training platforms, we only encountered a few in the trees and killed them easily. Hopefully your suggested plan works, best of luck white haired warrior." Foren reported, running to a nearby tree and disappearing in the tree's dense branches.

The sun above is beaten down from open gaps in the treeline, shining down brightly at any soldiers below causing their metal armor plates and weapons to gleam.

In the distance, after walking for a few more minutes, Cadin spotted platforms hanging above, connected to many trees. He raised his hand up, ordering everyone to stop.

"Joken orders the men to start surrounding the area, as for our unit they need to stick near the trees." Joken moved away from the group. Soldiers and cavalrymen were already in formation, raising their shields up and around them.

Joken quickly returned to the compressed group of cavalrymen. Slowly, the loud sound of marching became quieter and quieter, until only the soldiers behind them could be heard with the rest vanishing.

They all slowed down, entering into the treeline with the path just a few steps near them, trying to stay as silent as possible and jumping off their horses. Cadin gripped his sword and shield, peering at the trees, finding any with an entrance built into it.

After finding a few, he ordered his cavalrymen to start heading towards the other entrances. Soon, each entrance was covered with a small team of cavalrymen, all prepared to run up the stairs.

Up above, Cadin could hear the echoes of shouts, loud yelling and incoherent talking.

'On training platforms? That should make locating them easier then.' After a minute of preparing, feeling his hands tense up with anticipation, the weight of the battle's outcome on his back.

"Soldiers fire!" He yelled as loud as he could, suddenly a hundred arrows flew up quickly, Cadin could hear the echo of a few screams of pain, in a few seconds incoherent shouting and rapid movement could be heard, now echoing through the stairwell.

"Cavalrymen, let's head up!" Cadin led from the front. Rushing upstairs the yells only got louder.

He reached the top, every side was filled with soldiers peering down from the edges, firing arrows with a few running back and forth carrying open crates of arrows.

In a moment, Cadin observed everything from where he stood, soldiers nearing the hundreds all around the edges raining down hails of arrows at his soldiers down below, seeing a few arrows rise up and slam into the soldiers or onto the platform floor.

"Kill them all!" With his sword, Cadin swung his blade at the nearest soldier and continued with the rest, some fell from the ledge while others fell to the floor, bleeding out as Cadin continued swinging, trying to block with his shield as more soldiers began taking notice of him. The cavalrymen arrived on different sides and found themselves besieged by a larger force.

As Cadin struggled, trying to push back soldiers in front of him, he yelled down to the people.

"Soldiers! Cease fire and flood the platforms now."

The platforms were all consumed by chaos, Cadin faced nearly ten soldiers with the other soldiers slowly becoming surrounded by leather armored men and women, trying to slash at them with short blades. Cadin continued fighting, slowly the chaos of battle and the anger he felt at the enemy he faced, Cadin began fighting more aggressively, slashing at more soldiers as blood stained the ground, nearly painting the area red as his sword sustained constant blows, slowly being chipped away.

Behind them, the combined shouts of Cadin's soldiers roared out of the stairwell, in seconds a horde of soldiers began pushing the crowd of defenders back, relieving the cavalrymen and Cadin.

On other fronts, soldiers continued flooding in, nearly filling the platforms with hundreds of soldiers. Wooden homes slowly became battlegrounds as fighters rushed in, killing who they could. Some killed and some returning out bleeding.
