Chapter 33 - Making the First Move

"We understand your reasoning Cadin, but despite the points you have made. We will still detest your plan."

'Words don't seem to be working right now.'

Cadin placed the large map on the table, unrolling it so the others may see.

"These camps reside near to ones we have attacked, there is no doubt that they have witnessed what we have done to these camps, thus, we must take them by force, or waste time for a hopeless end." Cadin explained with his hands on the map, speaking with a rising tone of anger.

The leaders stayed silent, some buried their faces in their hands while others looked at him with emotionless faces. Whispers slowly rose up from a few, speaking to each other on what must be done next. But it was clear that they were still in fear, fear of Cadin's agression towards the camps and his plans of conquest.

The guards positioned themselves near the walls, facing the table and it's occupants with their weapons still drawn, gripping their weapons tightly, seemingly anticipating or preparing for something.

The leaders continued talking to one another, finally two of the leaders, Corlin and Vektis agreed with Cadin while the others continued vehemently denouncing him.

Without warning, guards from both sides charged at the same time while the leaders spoke. They attacked the leaders as they turned around, confused. Swords and spears dug deep into the unsuspecting leaders where they stood with only three still staying alive, fighting off their attackers.

Cadin and Joken got up with their weapons drawn, they began attacking the soldiers, showing no mercy as Cadin cut through their armor, driving his sword through their chestplates or slashing at open parts, taking them down quickly. One by one, the group of soldiers lay dead on the floor in puddles of their own blood.

Blood flowed on the table from the bodies of leaders with their heads lying on them, dead in their chairs before they could even get up and fight back.

Corlin was one of the survivors, pulling out his short sword from a soldier's corpse on the ground.

Muffled cries from the outside began, alerting the remaining leaders, it wasn't just them getting attacked.

'Who is attacking this camp?" Cadin walked to the doorway, prepared to fight the threat down below.

'At least the unruly leaders have been taken care off.' He thought to himself, running down the stairs to the door, hearing screams and cries of men and women get louder as he got closer.

Ramming through the door, Cadin realized what was causing the noises.

Immediately, the heat of fire struck his body before he could even see the camp outside. The camp was under attack.

Walls burned down as sections of it fell to the ground revealing the darkened forest outside. The wooden homes that once stood were now unrecognizable, consumed by bright orange flames tearing them apart, screams flooded out of the homes as people ran out aflame, falling to the ground with a loud thump, silencing their cries of pain.

Surviving civilians ran away in blind terror towards the leader's home or any form of cover, chased by barbaric attackers wearing leather armor and metal helmets, pillaging any home still standing and butchering those who survived their initial attack. The last guards of the camp held a few back, despite their low numbers and the viciousness of their attackers, the soldiers held firm, striking and parrying against the enemy. Near the doorway in front of Cadin, the bodies of civilians and soldiers alike lay in pools of blood, their heads facing the dirt, never to see the light of day again.

Cadin looked in shock at it all, a camp once protected by fortified walls and sturdy protection from anything outside, guarded by many soldiers wearing strong metal armor and weapons. All destroyed in front of him in a matter of a few minutes.

"Take out these barbarians!"

The leaders rushed out swords drawn, enraged and filled with anger upon witnessing what they had done to their ally's camp.

Cadin joined with them alongside Joken. Soon, the cries of the dying populace and sound of burning lumber were drowned out, Cadin began slashing at the weakly armored fighters, taking them down one by one in anger. His sword slowly became more and more coated in blood after each strike, spraying the ground around them.

The leaders held their own, fighting on all sides with their weapons, getting wounded in the process as they took out fighters charging towards them.

Minutes ticked by, and the attack slowed down, corpses of the dead barbarians grew in number. The screams though continued, homes started crumbling quickly after bits and pieces broke off, sending the buildings themselves crashing down in large blazes. Cadin ran frantically trying to avoid the falling wooden structures, seeing fires spread to more parts of the area.

With each fallen home, he felt the immense heat from them slam into his body, followed by a wave of black smoke only growing in size with each one crashing down, choking him while he tried to breath, covering his mouth with his hand.

After the smoke dissipated, he could see the camp again. Destroyed and aflame.

The sun above was setting, what should be cold winds blowing through the place was replaced by the fire and heat of burning wrecks of piled wood or stone.

He looked around and saw the scale of the attack's aftermath. The smell of fire and wood filled his nose along with the faint scent of blood from his sword while resting it on his shoulder. Only the leader's home remained standing, standing in front of the destroyed homes of many still aflame in a large pile of rubble and wood. The walls of the outside were now barely even present, exposing the camp to the elements.

On the ground, corpses of camp soldiers to barbarians and civilians littered the ground, blood forming puddles that nearly obscured the original ground beneath.

'How can some small tribes even do this?' Cadin was confused and baffled upon witnessing the destruction around him, getting a clearer view compared after the fight. Such large defenses and advancements in camp, all destroyed after a few minutes.

'At least the reluctant leaders are dead though. But how could this happen?'

Corlin and Vektis were the only surviving leaders, standing near the standing house alongside soldiers that have survived the onslaught.
