Matthew walked into Norvella's house. Once he was inside the house, his eyes were immediately drawn to the messy kitchen.
Kitchen utensils were scattered on the floor, and the cabinet doors were wide open. Many of the foodstuffs had rotted, giving off a cloying scent once it mixed with the smell of feces.
Apparently, the little girl was trying to find food in the kitchen, but she couldn't find anything and ended up making a mess in the kitchen.
Matthew used a handkerchief to cover his nose from the stench, then walked to Norvella's room, whose door was slightly open.
The closer Matthew got to the room, the more Matthew smelled a more pungent stench than in the kitchen and living room.
Matthew lowered his handkerchief slightly to detect the smell, and he frowned as he recognized the stench as the scent of a corpse that had been dead for days.
"Mrs. Norvella," Matthew called her name once again, hoping that someone would answer his call.
