Chapter 6 - THE GREAT ESCAPE

CHAPTER 6:THE GREAT ESCAPE

The woods was dark, gloomy and quiet…too quiet as Lilianna brushed aside the shrubs and made her way into the woods walking with trepidation and her hand clutched tightly on her torch light. The barks were becoming faint and less loud as Lilianna quickened in her pace. She couldn't afford to let some innocent and defenseless pups stay alone in the forest.

They could get hurt. She tried to pinpoint the direction the howls were coming from when she tripped over a branch and fell face splat into something wet. She groaned as she slowly stood up and turned her face then screamed when she saw what it was. It was blood. She quickly flashed her light on the ground and saw that she was standing in a bloody bloodbath as wolves were seen everywhere and also humans covering their body. She took some steps backwards as she hit a tree behind her back. She was hyperventilating and scared. She didn't know what the hell happened here and why there was a bloodbath.

She thought of running away but the little whimpers came towards her ears as she craned her neck in the direction of where it was coming from. She had to so something. Taking a deep breath, she exhaled and slowly made her way towards the are making sure not to step into any blood or carcass of the wolves that had died here. It seemed almost like a pack of wolves and judging from the claws on their body, they seemed to be have attacked by other wolves.

So wolves fighting wolves? What was this? Trying to establish territory? One pack should have just left the area to the other and this bloodshed would have been avoided. She shuddered as she made her way past the bloody scene. It turned her so much that she was physically sick but she could still hear the helpless howls of the pups in front of her. They needed her, they sounded hurt. She only hoped that they weren't the last survivor of their pack. That would be hurtful, for them to grow up without their parents.

Pushing a shrub behind, she finally stepped into the marked area where she could see three furry balls, scurrying around each other as she stepped forward slowly. She mistakenly stepped on a twig and they turned to face her, growling at her as Lorraine could see the problem.

The one who had white and black furs had one of her paws in a trap which was dripping blood and the siblings obviously was over protective. On closer look she saw that the one who was injured happened to be the female then the other two, once completely white and the other completely black were female and male respectively. And not far from them laid a big black female wolf dead. Lorraine gasped in shock when she saw this, she couldn't believe her eyes.

That had to be their mum as the girl would bark at her and then go back to nuzzle the wolf trying to wake her up. The scene broke her heart. She tried taking a step forward but all she could see was a sneer from the completely black pup. While the one who was injured was the one howling in pain as they tried to get her paw out but they had no idea what they were doing.

And from the way they were standing, she knew that they had just started walking as their steps were shaky and not ordinate and they kept on falling down. She took a step forward and they glared at her, signaling to her that she was stepping on private property and she should back off.

Lorraine wasn't going to back off, they were going to be dead soon especially after the massacre that she had just witnessed, the predators were definitely not far behind.

"I am trying to help." She whispered but it did no good as they just growled at her. She knew that there was only one way to earn their trust and that was the hard way. She surged forward and reached for the injured one as the two jumped on her hand biting her hard trying to get her to drop their sister but Lorraine ignored the pain as she tried to get the trap off. Even the injured one was howling desperately trying to get away from the human. Lorraine could see that all of them was just scared and were trying to do what they thought was right.

Finally she was able to get the pup free from the trap as she stepped back, the other pups rushed to their sister and started licking her as Lorraine looked at her hands they were all bloody and she had wounds and bite marks.

But she ignored it, she was happy to see that the pups were safe…for now. There was still danger ahead. She knew that she had to get the pups back to town and into her office, because they were not going to survive here in the wild especially with no parents and a dead pack, but how to get them to follow her seemed to be the issue.

She walked closer to them and knelt down as the two growled at her but the one that she had saved, walked slowly into her hands as Lorraine carefully carried her brushing her furs which made her relaxed. The other two seeing this dropped their guard and walked slowly towards her as she ended up petting all of them. Lorraine was happy that they had learned to trust her. That was one step to getting them out of there.

She kept on rubbing their furs as they snuggled against her, and some rolled on the floor and she helped them up. But as they were lost in their play, there was another twig snapping as more growls from all over the direction could be heard. The triplets pup quickly got back on high alert and started barking at the shadows as Lorraine squinted trying to see what was happening when she saw the eyes.

It was so dark and filled with hatred as it walked from the shadows and the pups kept on barking. Lorraine saw a wolf which had a scar on its face and she shrank back in fear. She knew this wolf. This was the same wolf that had scarred her childhood. But it was impossible….it was supposed to be a nightmare, like the therapist told her.

She stood up and walked back away from the pups as more and more wolves came out of hiding growling as they faced the pups. Lorraine was trying to stop the flood of memories that came rushing back, a past that she thought she had finally buried. She could still see the look of terror in her mother's face as she shoved her hard in the tree trunk to protect her from the same wolf that dragged her to her dead. It was the same wolf, they looked exactly the same but that had to be impossible because they all told her she had imagined it.

The wolves had no intention on even acknowledging her, rather they were advancing towards the triplets and they kept their stance standing in front of their dead mum trying to protect her as they all growled too, waiting to see who was going to attack. Lorraine quickly shook off the thoughts as she saw that the pups had no chance of winning this fight at all. She had to get in action. As the wolf leaped into the air, she ran forward grabbing a stick that she used and hit him on his face which pushed him to the other side as he fell down.

No one had to tell Lorraine what to do next as she grabbed the triplets and started running back where she came from. The pups were protesting as their mum was still left behind and were biting her to get her to drop them but Lorraine only tightened the hold on them. In the distance she could hear the wolves all growling and snarling and fast in their approach. She could feel about 40 wolves including the one that she had just pissed off greatly chasing her. She kept on running, jumping shrubs and pushing her way through vines and twigs as she was determined to save this pups.

"Please if anyone can help me, I need help." She murmured in her heart as she looked up to the bright moon which seemed to be following her. She heard a thud and a wolf howl in pain as she tyurned back to see what had happened but to her surprise she was seeing twigs and weeds blocking the path so that the wolves couldn't see her. It seemed like they are shielding her and in front of her, the twigs and plants all seemed to open as if it was leading her. She could see her car by the side of the road about thirty meters in front of her. She was going to make it. The thought made her lit up with wolf despite death trailing on her path. Then she stumbled and fell down as the pups fell from her hands and she hit her head on a stump.
