The last night storm had been a terrible one with trees falling and roofs flying off houses, but the sun which shines this morning in the land of Lausfall showed no sign of a storm last night.
Edna woke up to the beautiful weather of the morning, the sun shone hard, penetrating through the old gray blinds of the house, the chirping of the birds hummed a sweet early morning song that made the morning more beautiful, slowly, slowly she got up from bed walking with each sluggish step towards the window and opened the blinds and the sun gave out all it's shine on her Illuminating the room, she winced her eyes to adjust them to the sun and stared towards the horizon marveled by it's absolute beauty. Living by the beach was an absolute advantage as to great views like this but a great disadvantage since it was far from the capital where she worked as a hatter, in a big shop owned by the government.
Tired from too much stress, Edna decided to take a quick walk on the shore to stretch her numb limbs before going to work, as she walked she notices the scattered palm trees on the beach, a terrible storm must have happened last night but was too asleep to notice so she thought. She bent down to pick up the little barks and leaves of the tree as she was the only one who could do it, the beach had been an abandoned beach after the plague, at that time she had been five to notice a killer disease had been spreading back then, her mother and father had move here till the plague had been over and at the time they had returned to the capital they had realized it was their biggest mistake as their well trusted accountant had betrayed them and shared their wealth among her father's brothers, with no one to help and no evidence of the fraud, the family had move into poverty, her father ran away in shame and left them to fend for their selves. Her mother realized she could make hats and decided to work at the local hat shop, following her footsteps, Edna learned from her and they were happy with the little they had even though they were not comfortable as before. Edna moved here a few years after her mother's death to get away from the painful memories of been alone, the house had suit her as it match her loneliness the house and beach had been home ever since, Edna decided to put the memories aside and clean up the beach, as she picked up the last straw she heard her name been called, she turned to see Sam, the carriage boy who came to pick her up every morning and took her to the capital, he waved his hands at her, she smiled at him and waved back "I'll be there" she yelled to him and ran to the house.
Sam followed her into the house and made himself comfortable on the antique sofa. It had dust all over it and was torn at various sizes, a roach came out of the cut, Sam jumped in his sit in fear and yelped.
"I can't believe you call this place comfortable"
"it's quiet and lovely and free from city stress" Edna said as she put on her croset
"well, I'd rather live in the city stress than this dump, I mean it has roaches for God's sake
"yeah well I like it like that, besides it's no dump I clean it every day"
" no wonder you're always late for work"
Edna laughed as she came out wearing a mint green dress with white short puff sleeves, she went to the table by the window and picked her shoes under it. She then put on her straw hat and went to pick her old brown bag.
"is there anything in that bag of yours? always carrying it but never seen you open it"
"mind your business Sam"
She got her keys and went out with Sam following her, she locked the door and they head up to the rocky path that led to the main road where his carriage was.
"So..... how are you feeling Sam, you know after the vaccine?"
"Fine..... I guess"
"No that's not what I meant, I mean towards Emma ?"
"Well just like what the government said, they're no more feelings or love in me."
"Wait, as in you didn't try to stop them at all, I thought you loved her?!!"
"Of course I did Edna, I tried my best to talk sense into them but they thought I've ran mad. They said if I didn't take it, they'll hand me to the government and boy, I'd never wish that for my enemy I had no choice but to do it"
"Oh poor Emma, she'd be devastated"
" I don't even want to remember her face when I told her"
"Oh no.. you have ? ahh I wonder when someone would just stand up to these tyrants called the government"
"well these tyrants you call them have been keeping us safe, from every danger outside Lausfall, especially the dark master"
"But still they can't use that as an advantage over us you know"
"it's the vaccine that keeps us safe Edna you know that besides, that why they can do anything they want, they're the government"
"Well" Edna said as they got to the carriage "Someone has to stand up to them even if the person is not from our generation"
"hmm.... well I hope so" Sam said as he got on the carriage with Edna and rode off to the capital.
