Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

After Davies washed and peeled the carrots he finished up the rest of the preparation and started to work on the meat.

"Lucky the electricity still runs. No idea what I'm going to do after the system goes down and humanity fall back to the dark ages. I think I read something about power plants without workers to perform routine work would cease to function in at most 24 hours its the same for nuclear plants and coal powered ones too.

At least there is only a slight chance of nuclear meltdown because they automatically shut down without proper maintenance. So I don't need to worry about that, because the most likely cenario of my death right now would be starvation, freezing, sickness or some random bloke eat me than shits me out at side of the road while chasing the next unlucky comrade.

Let's focus on electricity first. The best way to solve it is to break inside a house that fully solar powered and has a well preferably generator pumped and the building is connected to it. The only problem those kind of houses only exist in smaller villages. Before this I could drive to the closest village in 10 minute, now... Its like a god damn nightmare mode in the worst kind of game. Don't even talk about searching for a building with solar panels on the roof while fighting or evading god damn starving cannibals. My three portable solar panel is way too small for anything useful. They could charge my phone or laptop but no way to use them for an oven or a fridge. I could gather more of them but I have no idea how to connect them together and what kind of battery and transformer would need for something like that. I think I have to give up on electricity for now. Maybe I should scavange some gas flasks and switch to gas powered oven. There should be enough flasks left inside the closest Obi or Toom for years to come. Problem again is transporting them. "

While Davies was cooking and getting ready the lunch and solving his problems inside his brain folds, Susanne was checking out the house. She was not amazed about what she seen, in her eyes Davies was a boring person. His home decor barely exist the walls are empty no photos or any kind of pictures. The floor is bare laminate flooring with no carpet or anything. There was no flowers anywhere in the building only a small meter high lemon tree by the balcony door. The only colorful place inside the flat was the gaming pc and its 2 meter diameter zone. She could imagine him spending all his home time front of that desktop.

- So Davies what is your work if you don't mind me asking?

- Well I had a few works before. But so far all of them are temporary places. In my mind I'm not really the guy who knows what to do with his life. I could say the one I liked the most when I was working as a postman. But I don't think it matters anymore. After this all ends I would need to find a new job if and its a big if something like that could even happen.

Thinking about it for a moment he decided that there is no reason to talk about work or anything like that. If every country and city is same like this one, than the known human civilization is doomed.

- Why do you say that?

Susanne was frowning at him after she sat back down on the tv couch.

- Well... for starters let's say every city is the same like this one. I think we can certainly say 70% of the city's population got infected in a single day or more but definitely not less. The government failed to contain the outbreak and most likely there are no command chain anymore. Only some lone group of soldiers going after their head and government workers hiding in bunkers and far away island where they flew with private jets. If 70% of human population got infected and the cure can't be made in the next few days it will be too late to turn back from here. These are not zombies, they need nutrition but there are too many of them so they can't get enough food. If nothing changes than most of them should starve to death in a weeks time. They are not smart enough to start agriculture or rise cattle, nor can they grow vegetables. Their only source of food is the remaining 30% healthy person. So if out of that 30% in best case cenario 20% survives til the infected starve to death than we are left with 400 million survivor. You think the scientist and the doctors or maybe engineers going to be that 20%? No. The rich the lucky the athletic and the ones who would do anything for survival. The rich would not plow the field to start up civilization again. The athletic would not start up power plants because they have no idea how to do it, and the lucky would be too few.

- What about the ones who would do anything to survive?

- Yes. Guys like that would evade other human beings. Would be smart enough to take care of their families and themselves and would not get mixed up in the upcoming fight over scraps. If the government dissapears there are nobody left to keep the fragile illusion of civilization. In the end we all are animals. The only reason we act like civilized beings is because of the fear from the punishment if we don't follow the rules.
