- I don't think the situation got so bad. Maybe after a few days help will come, and the army steps up. Why are you so pessimistic?
Susanne frowned at Davies she thought he's over dramatising the whole thing.
"This guy must have watched too many post apocalyptic movies or something. The army couldn't be defeated in such a short time. Even if our army is gone it's not like the whole world got destroyed in a single day right?"
Whyle Susanne was thinking about Davies weird way of expressing their situation the old man on the other side of the wall got back to work and started to hit the wall again.
Both of them looked at the ominous hole on the wall and Davies knew that sooner or later he going to have to deal with him.
- Yes you are right. What I said was really the worst case scenario. But let me ask you something. How many military planes helicopters tanks and cars have you seen? There was none. Not even passanger planes, like the whole world got paused yesterday and we stuck in a nightmare. The military would have been mobilizer long ago flooding the streets and the sky, yet there are none. Maybe the current military is prepared against bombing, tanks guns and other stuff. But a fast acting virus is different. It's not like they wear gas masks 24 hour a day. If the military bases also faced the same kind of outbreak than there is no way they had time to get prepared. It's not like they are some kind of superhuman, those soldiers are the same like us, only work for the money but when shit hits the fans they also going to try to survive because that's the basic instinct in all of us.
-Yes but they are trained for combat not like us.
Cutting off his worlds annoyedly about him trying to make her scared and because of his nonexistent belief in the soldiers she slammed her feet hard on the ground in anger.
Davies got a bit surprised but he continued anyway, because he did belive he's not wrong.
- Yes they are trained for combat. How to shoot back when they are shot, roll in the dirt and stuff like that. They are definitely have more chance to survive when someone put a gun in their hands. But if out of four soldier three of them got infected do you really think they can defend themselves? The armory most likely locked, and only the guards on duty carry weapons. If the one guy who has the keys for the armory got turned and run off to god knows where I don't think the remaining few soldier could fight themselves out of this bad situation with bare hands. It happened simply too fast and by the time the government found out what's going on it was already too late to send down command on the chain. I do hope that our situation is bad compared to other cityes but I don't think that's the case.
The old man got even more active hearing Susanne slightly raised voice and now he started to work with double the speed.
" I should deal with the old man when he makes the hole big enough for me to stab him. There is no way I could try to capture him, I'm not so naive to believe this sickness going to get a cure any time soon. And right now I need to take care of myself and not some random old guy. "
- Alright there is no need to think about this for now. We going to see it for ourselves soon enough if you are right.
She simply sit down on a couch with a dejected expression sighing loudly.
- Anyway what are you plan to do with your neighbour?
Looking at the wall again she was starting to get anxious thinking about what happened to her last night.
- I'll take care of him the moment he made the hole big enough. If he breaks trough the wall and makes a hole big enough for me to climb through than at least we could have a bit bigger space. And I could stab him from a distance before he gets to us.
"I think I heard somewhere that the old guy is a hunter, if I could get my hands on a rifle than my chance to survive this hell would at least triple."
- You plan to kill him?!
Sussanes eyes slightly bulged out and shouted in surprise.
- If you want to do it than you are more than welcome. I won't enjoy it but it's not like I have any other idea what to do with him. Like you said soldiers are trained for combat but I'm not, so I do what I can to keep ourselves safe.
Davies said with a sour face while thinking about yesterday morning when his biggest problem was some nausea and to pick up a sick paper from his doctor's nurses. And now only after a single day he plans to kill someone to stay safe.
-And what if they find a cure in the future? Also maybe this is not permanent and after a few days they get better alone. On the TV before it went out they said the infected is only under heavy hallucination and not capable of thinking while they are sick. And they are attacking humans purely on instinct.
Davies was looking at Susanne slightly weird. Whyle thinking about those horror movies he seen when a woman always goes towards the weird sound in the middle of the night only to get herself killed and show some off her skills in screaming.
"Well she did not say her friend got eaten yesterday but I think after four infected got their hands on her I don't think they simply just strangled her. So why is she still so naive? Not like I told her to do it herself."
- Yes it could be they find a cure but I won't take the risk of trying to capture him alive. I'm not some hero. If I can help someone without too much risk like I helped you, than okay I would try my best. But this is different. The guy is sick and they clearly only eat human flesh or at least they won't eat a sandwich like you and me. So even if I catch him and we bind him what are we going to feed him? Watch him slowly starve to death? And I don't want to end up like him, I love my life and I can't nor will I ever take such a risk for a stranger.
Susanne clearly know he is right. But if she accept that he plans to kill someone wouldn't that make her an accomplice?
" Should I simply stand at the side while he kills someone? He's only sick it's not like he wants to harm us."
- I won't stop you but I don't think it's a good idea. Can't we simply block the wall so he can't get here?
Looking around the wall was 3 meter wide.
" Not a bad idea but if that old man can get through solid wall than I have nothing else to block him with."
- Not possible. You ran next to his door when I let you in. It was closed right?
Davies suddenly got a bad feeling. What if that door is open and the others from the corridor also get inside here. Than it will not only be the old man who he needs to take care of but who knows how many others.
"I don't want to acknowledge but I really want to get inside his building and the easyest way it to let him demolish tha wall between us."
- Yeah he's door was closed when I run up. But I did not try to get inside his flat. There was blood on the handle so I thought it's better not to try it.
Thinking back Sussane remembered clearly that door because after she run up the stairs, that was the first door after the corner and she already lifted her arm to try to unlock it when she seen the blood all over the handle. So she decided to skip that apartment and went directly to Davies's place.
- That's good.
After talking some more they both went quiet while Davies finished prepared lunch then put it inside the fridge the lights started to flicker.
They spent more than a hour in total silence while Davies was sitting front of his pc with the spear in hand and susanne sitting on the couch. Both of them looked at the ever growing hole on the wall and the flickering light. There was already short term power outages and they keep getting longer as time passed. After a hour of silence Davies tryed to chat with Susanne about everyday things to lessen some tension from their mind.
He found out that she's a college student on an one week vacation from Stuttgarts medical college, so she came to spend some time at her friend's Anna's place. 21 years old and currently single. Her parents lives near hamburg and they did not answer her calls when the outbreak happened. They have a small boat so she hopes they left to the water when the outbreak happened.
