The night was far gone. The Eerie silence was…just too serene and gave off a vibe of discomfort. So much so that it woke a sleeping soul.
"Was it a dream? I wasn't dreaming right? That has got to be real." Alvira panted, wide awake, her brows creased in worry and confusion.
The sound of the door creaked letting her know someone just entered the room. It was Kayla and immediately she saw her, she latched at her. "Kay, how did I get home? I mean who…who did I come with?" Alvira asked in one breath, holding on to Kayla who was standing in front of her.
"Looks like you had a nightmare. How are you doing now?" Totally ignoring her question, Kayla asked her with worry instead, placing the back of her hand on her forehead to feel her temperature.
Alvira's brows furrowed downwards. "what are you doing?" She swiped Kayla's hand gently from her head.
"You were not feeling good when you came home earlier and—"
"When I came home….? I came alone?"
"No you didn't, Someone dropped you off and he said you had a meeting with your boss and that was the reason you were home late—"
"So…I didn't come home with my Boss?" Alvira asked, The confusion was getting to her more and more.
"Why are you asking that? Were you not aware of who you were with?"
"You are telling me, I was concious when I stepped in with the man you saw?"
"Not quite, but your temperature was high and you looked sick and tipsy, like you were about to faint. Which you did in my arms." Kayla said, walking over to the side table and carried a glass of water with her. "I even thought you were drunk, but you didn't reek of any alcohol." She continued as she moved back over to where she stood previously.
"I…." Alvira's mouth opened like she was about to say something, but she closed it again. She took the glass of water Kayla was handing over to her and drank slowly from it. But her mind was far from where her body was.
After gulping a fit, she returned the glass back to Kayla.
"You must rest now. I don't know if you could take a day off tomorrow since you are not feeling quite better, you should call—"
"It's okay Kayla, I will..I mean I will manage. It's just my first day and I don't wanna take a break the next day, besides I have pending duties at the office." Alvira said, the frown still etched on her face.
"Alright then, if it works for you. Good night, I will be going to bed now." Kayla said and turned to exit.
"Good night," Alvira muttered back, her eyes jammed with the clock on the wall and it was past twelve almost going to one. 'So it's been two hours already.'
"Kayla wait." She halted her halfway.
"I…Do you know what a bane's Cure is?"
Kayla furrowed her brows in question. "I don't think I've ever heard of that before." She said unsure.
"Oh…Okay, it's nothing just read it in a book and thought it was real." She laughed sheepishly laying her excuse for the question.
Kayla rolled her eyes and shook her head. "Go to bed now, Good night."
"Night." Alvira murmured softly as she lay her head gently on the pillow with her gaze that held utter worry.
For the first time, she hasn't been so eager for morning.
And just as she had hoped. Her alarm rang out, telling it's morning and her usual time to start preparing for work. Four!. Moving on to Alvira. The moment the sound of the alarm resonated, she stood up as if that was what she was waiting for. The dark circles underneath her eyes was enough to tell she had not gotten any sleep last night.
She dragged her heavy body to the bathroom.
In less than thirty minutes she was done with everything, she didn't even put up the minimal make over she does. Only some powder and some colorless lip gloss and she was good to go.
The was more time left, so she decided to go let Kayla know that she's leaving.
Knocking on the girl door, no one answered. Of course Kayla most still be fast asleep, luckily they don't lock their doors when they sleep because it's only both of them in the apartment.
She slowly pushed it opened and walked in. "Kayla! Kayla!." She called out with gently strokes.
"Mmmm?" Kayla moaned in response.
"I'm going now okay, I told you this time. Bye! I'm off to work." She muttered In audible whispers.
"Huh..? This early?" She said in her sleepy voice.
"Yes this early, sleep well okay, don't worry I'll eat something at work." Alvira giggled at her.
"You better do…and come home early this time." She murmured, still in her sleep.
"Yes I will." Alvira gently stood from her squatting position and left the room.
Repeatedly, she still had to trek to the main road to be able to find a taxi, it was hard but she got one. And she arrived around to six in the office.
Remembering Ezra took the key last night, she slapped herself on the forehead asking why she didn't get it back earlier. Well how was she supposed to.
She went into the office of the man who briefed her of everything about the Job and thankfully he was present. She explained everything to him and he handed her a spare key. Hurriedly thanking him she left.
Alvira inserted the key into the keyhole and twisted it open. She made sure she arranged everything that was left improper the last day. And when she was done it was sharp seven. 'Any moment now he will step through that door.' She said to herself.
She made his coffee, just as he instructed her the previous day. Everything was set in stone and now just for him to come. She exited the office and went over to her table. A few of her colleagues had already arrived. They exchange greetings and got started.
It was an hour passed already and the Boss was absent. During all this time, Alvira was feeling some kind of uncomfortable feeling. She kept glancing at her time every ten minutes. The wait was excruciatingly painful.
"Can't believe the boss is absent today. Can you believe that?"
"Like seriously right?, I heard he has never skipped work before. Including on weekends, he will always be here."
"So..? How did you know he isn't coming?"
"I overheard Director Yan talking to the Boss on the call. He said he wouldn't be present, and handed the company into Director Yan's control for today."
"Really."
"You are doubting? Wait and see for you self's."
The Gossip mongers walked passed, gossiping about their Boss. But this gossip only caught Alvira's interest.
"The Boss is not coming….? What is happening?"
