She understood that max was at work, but it didn't make sense that Travis and Victoria would be out of the house.
"Yes," she remembered as she slightly slapped her forehead and rushed back to remove her key from the purse in the vehicle.
From a distance, she could see Amy's car driving into the compound, and she felt relief and anger at Amy's act.
Ignoring her, she rushed to open their door and found the house was neatly arranged, just like it usually was.
She walked to the dining room, which was adjacent to the living room, and found used plates and glasses on the table, which she took to the kitchen.
Her mind was so engrossed that at that moment, she didn't think much of why there were three plates instead of two when her father wasn't at home during the day.
She moved around aimlessly for a while, not sure of what to do with her anger since no one was at home to rant to, then heard the front door open and knew Amy was in.
"I'm sorry; I couldn't help but follow you. I'm sorry for breaking that to you, but it just didn't feel right to let you blame Max," Amy said apologetically as she cautiously walked toward Steph, who was staring at her with a poker expression.
"I know what you think. Divorce is never easy on anyone, especially the kids. This isn't your fault," Amy said.
Steph scoffed before asking how she knew so much.
"Friends' experiences. I just want to let you know that I'll be with you, Steph. Through it all," Amy said softly, and Steph's resolve broke down.
Amy quickly rushed to hug her, and for a while, it was an emotional scene to watch.
"I don't know what to do, Amy. I came here with a lot of rages to project out, but here I am, with only furniture and the walls to talk to," Steph said as she let herself off the embrace before her eyes landed on the door of her dad's study room.
She knew it would be locked, but she still felt drawn to it, so much so that she slowly walked towards the room, and a skeptical Amy followed her silently.
She held the door hinge and tried to open it, and it did. She gasped in shock as she turned to look at Amy, and sighing, inhaling, and exhaling deeply, she got into the room where the first thing that caught her sight was the unsigned divorce papers on the table.
"So it makes sense," she said, more to herself than to Amy.
"I think my mum was returning these to dad, and she forgot to lock the door. She must have been in a hurry since she knows how dad is always protective of this space," Steph explained, and Amy nodded for lack of something better to say.
As she stood by the door, she saw Steph walk to the other side and sit on max's chair, take a pen and sign the papers.
"Are you insane?" Amy asked in shock as she rushed to Steph
"Isn't it about time?" Steph asked. "I know my mom's signature, I have helped her sign some of her documents, and there's no problem helping her with these as well. No one will know I signed," she answered as she shrugged.
"This is illegal," Amy said angrily. Steph opened her mouth to respond but was interrupted by the ring of her phone. Amy's phone also rang at the same time, and the two looked at their phones in shock, their hearts in their mouths.
"It's Ivan calling me," Steph said in a murmur, and Amy answered by saying hers was an unknown number.
"This doesn't look good,' Amy said as she took Steph back to receive the call and left Steph to do the same.
"Yes, Ivan, what is it?" Steph asked as she gripped her chest, which was rapidly thumping.
"It's Camila," Amy's caller introduced herself in a rush. Amy rolled her eyes and clicked her tongue, ready to start throwing insults at Camila, but the next thing shocked her to the core.
"How? When? Where?" Amy asked, not sure what she wanted to be answered first. After that, she questioned Camila if she was serious, and then she quietly nervously laughed as she did so.
"I wouldn't joke about such a thing," Camila said, then disconnected the phone.
Amy forced herself to turn around and face Steph, who had the expression of a cat that had cold water poured over its head.
"That was Ivan…he says Kevin and Dylan have been arrested for drug possession," Steph told Amy first, and the next thing that happened was Amy falling on the floor with a loud thud.
