She managed to get a job as a nurse in a very prestigious white hospital and was admired being the only black woman there.
Soon months later Aubrey was born.
Rose and Gladys still kept in touch via text messages and WhatsApp in which she learned Gladys was an intern working at a law firm.
Three years later.....
Little Aubrey still asks about her dad.
"Mommy what happened to my dad?"
"Baby he....w..well..., I don't know where he is or what happened to him, he's dead to me, now can we discuss something else like how was school?"
Meanwhile...
"Hello sweetie"
"Curse you Adam!! Let me go!!"
Adam had bound Gladys to a chair in a small room.
"No!! Not until you tell me where Rose is!!"
"I don't know!!"
"You idiot! I know you two still keep in touch you know where she is now tell me!!"
"No place you should know"
"You're asking for the pain Gladys"
Adam said and pulled out a hot piece of iron from underneath a camper gas that was on the floor.
He walked towards her and placed it on her left arm.
He smiled as she yelled in pain.
"Tell me!!"
"She's been living in Virginia with her daughter for a while now"
"Good girl"
He let her go and she ran home and nursed her wounds.
She couldn't help but feel guilty about putting Rose and her daughter's life in danger.
Rose was taking care of her garden when her daughter started yelling in pain from inside the house.
She ran inside and saw her daughter rolling on the floor clutching her belly and crying.
"Aubrey! What happened?!"
"Mom! My stomach it hurts!!"
The ambulance took her to the hospital.
"Mrs Sangria"
"Yes"
"Please come in"
"If you look at the diagram you will see a tumor has been growing in her stomach"
"What! Are you serious!"
"Has she been complaining of pains"
"Actually yes she does"
"I recommend an urgent surgery"
"Um okay but how much will it cost"
"50,000$"
"What! That's half my salary, I don't have enough money"
"Until you have enough I recommend she stays here for proper care"
Rose walked out of the hospital feeling defeated, did God just want to make sure she remembered that her child was an unplanned mistake.
That evening she called Gladys.
"Hey Gladys I really need your help my daughter is really sick and needs an urgent surgery but I can't afford it"
"How much does it cost"
"50,000 dollars I'm afraid"
"Really that's so cheap I'll send the money right now"
As the call cut Rose flopped back into bed thanking God for a friend like Gladys.
Very early on Saturday morning at about 5:00am there was a knock on the door.
"Hello who is it?"
Rose said sleepily and opened the door.
On the front porch there stood Gladys.
