Chapter 1 - Chapter 1- Express-O

"Caffeine is the shit.", I think to myself out loud as I take a sip to get rid of the inevitable grogginess that I always happen to feel in the morning. That semi-consciousness, those heavy eyelids, that Oh, I can't fall back asleep but I want to keep dreaming. Then, one gulp of instant coffee (great, I don't have the luxurious espresso machine yet; it's on my checklist though), and boy, am I ready to go for a run. A run in my head. Or perhaps just a little bit of body weight training to get me going.

"Ciara!" Did I just hear someone call my name? But I live alone.

A chilling shudder runs through my spine as I widen my eyes. Oh, it's my cat. My jaw drops from the shock of what I'm witnessing. Can my cat talk? What the hell!

And then my alarm goes beep boop beep. And well, that was a weirdly frightening dream but something I wish happened for a day or so. I definitely want to know if my cat, Lira, is just as indifferent if she could talk.

Anyway, I definitely am awake now and this is my real life. My life with a cat, a cat who can't talk..yet and coffee and work in a cubicle, and an occasional bucket of ice cream and friends on Netflix. I honestly can't complain because it's pretty peaceful, to say the least. A part of me is also anticipating good things in life, like great friends, free from 9 to 5, adventures and spirituality… okay, I think I can skip the spirituality part. So, I'm a 5 foot four inches tall, 21-year-old girl inside the mind of a 14-year-old, living a normal ass life, anticipating greater things whilst not stressing aggressively.

After all the sweat and showering, I go to my cubicle at work. Yes, I have a normal 9 to 5 job where we sell batteries. It's funnnnnn…okay, maybe not but it's better than nothing.

I have a few friends here at "Batt For Life" but it's pretty much "We roll but we will never think about each other when we're by ourselves at home in our comfy pajamas". It's cool though. The closest person I have at work is Misha. She has this gothic look with dark eyeliner smudged almost, bright red lipstick, and shoulder-length black hair. She's anything like me; I guess opposites do attract. It's fascinating to see how she turns into this sweet charming person like an attentive, innocent little school girl with a raspy voice while she's on her calls being a receptionist but once she's done with it, she turns into a total gothic being with all the chill in the world. You can see a person having a split personality right before your eyes. She loves me though and she's the only person at work with whom I like to hang out after work sometimes, or she drags me into her crazy party life afterward. Sometimes when my wild side kicks in, which is rare, she's definitely the person on my speed dial that I will instinctively hit the button to.

Misha, misha I hear chant-like whispers echoing in from someone in front of me. I look towards the sound right in front of my computer desk and see Misha chanting her own name.

Misha , misha, misha, misha, misha, misha

MISHA! I shout at her," What are you doing, chanting your own name?" I get out of my cubicle and head across her body.

"It's such a weird name, I can't get over it." she says, pursing her lips tight.

"And, you're noticing it now?" I ask her, raising my right eyebrow.

"Yah-huh". She sighs, "I've never had a problem with my name, it's just that this new guy pointed it out and I can't stop thinking about it".

"New guy?" I ask, with just a hint of enthusiasm in my tone.

"Yes, he's in the cafeteria, I guess. Meh, if he didn't have this mysterious aura, I probably would have just brushed it off. Have you seen his eyes? It's crazy! Well, screw him. I can't change my name now, can I?.. or Can I?" Her eyes light up as she goes back to her desk to google something which I'm probably guessing is something along the lines of How do I legally change my name.

Who is this guy that made someone so chill question her own name, I wonder. Guess I'm heading to the cafeteria to grab another caffeine-infused…something.
