Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

" What?" She screamed out in shock.

Dead?

" Who's dead?" She asked in a tiny voice. It definitely can't be her parents. She spoke to them a while ago, so what the hell was this man talking about?

" The owner of this phone and his wife!"

" Which hospital are they being transferred to? Tell me now!" She yelled out. Right now, she was sure she would go crazy. This was too much for her to handle. Why should misfortunes happen to her on a day that was supposed to be a happy moment for her? Whom did she offend and did not know? She wondered.

" Saint Unique hospital. Around…" she hung up before the caller could complete what he had to say as she quickly diverted her direction and drove off to the hospital while tears gushed out of her eyes.

No! At this rate, she was sure that she was cursed. If she wasn't cursed, why was misfortunes happening to her? Just a tiny, timid lady going through shit? She thought.

She already had a bad day with what her sister and her fiancee did to her and now, her parents got into an accident and…. Died? No! She has no reason to believe that Statement! It was definetly not true! They were unconscious. She would not believe them until she saw it with her own eyes.

" No… no… gather your shits together, Zoe. Your parents aren't dead. I bet they are unconscious and waiting for you to probably heal up or something. Calm your nerves. Everything would be fine!" She muttered in tears as she tried to smile but then, she seemed unsettled. Something was definitely off even if she wanted to deny it.

In as much as she tried not to think about death, she could not help but wonder if everything would be fine.

At this moment, her phone rang again. This time, it was one of the bridesmaids. She sighed sadly. They must have known that she was already keeping them waiting but then, what could she do?

Not go home or go back home and face the embarrassment alone after what those people had done? They were probably expecting her but unfortunately, she would not be there. She already knew that they would be worried by now but she was too shameful to see them. She did not have the guts to bear the mess they had created. They should be the one to take care of the mess that her sister had created. She thought and sniffed as she drove towards the entrance of the hospital still in tears.

" Please, have you seen anyone… couples…" she trailed off and tilted her head as she stared at the nurses. She did not know what to describe them as she looked at the receptionist who seemed impatient.

" Miss, we have other things to do. If you would excuse us!" She said rudely as she began to write something she did not know about.

Other nurses looked at the woman in a white, stained wedding gown with her flushed face which was disorganized. Some concluded that she was crazy. They wondered if she ran away from the church or something else.

" I heard they were wheeled here. A couple. They are middle aged too. Please, help me" she said in tears and tried to demonstrate the way the looked with her hands.

" Oh… could she mean those dead couples that were wheeled here a while ago?" A nurse asked her coworker.

What? Dead? Her parents? They can't be dead! That isn't even true. She thought and frowned.

" They aren't dead. They are only unconscious!" She said.

" But they were the only couples brought here since this morning!"

Still, Zoe refused to believe that shit. She was sure that it wasn't true! Who the hell did they think they are? How dare them say nonsense about her parents? She thought in anger.

" Watch your words! They can't be dead! Let me see them!" She ordered with a deadly gaze while the rude nurse sighed and signaled to her to follow her while the other nurses followed suit.

She hurriedly ran over to where they was and opened the door of their ward. Her heart broke to pieces at the sight of what she saw. She diverted her gaze to the ECG monitor and saw that what they said was true. The monitor had stopped working which indicated that they were long gone! They were dead! .

Still, she did not believe it!

" They aren't dead, right? The monitor must have malfunctioned! What do you think?" She said in a small voice.

" Dad…" she called out. She had lost the strength to shed tears harder but still, tears would not stop flowing from her eyes.

" Mom! Why… did you have to leave me? Please, ma'am! Do something about this! They are all I have left!" She said as she hurriedly ran to hold the nurse hands.

" Ma'am, you have to take heart. Right now, they have to be transferred to the mortuary and…"

" Shut it! They aren't dead yet! Don't tell me that! They are just unconscious! Do something! It's part of your job, right? Do something! How do you expect me to live all alone? You have no idea what I've gone through in this world! They must not die!" She screamed at the nurses and held her clothes while the other nurses tried to free their head nurse from her tight grip.

Just then, the doctor came inside.

" What's going on here? Ma'am, you're causing a scene! Respect yourself! This woman is one of our workers here!" He said to caution Zoe but she would not hear any of it as she aggressively rushed to the doctor. He signaled to the nurses to take the bodies out of the room. Zoe noticed what they were about to do and held his hands.

" Please, doctor. Save them. They are all I have. I'm sure they aren't dead! Please, don't take them out of the room." She screamed out as she held the doctor's collar also. She would definitely go crazy and she could feel her world already crashing right in front of her. This was not the life she craved to have. This was not the life she bargained for. All her life, she had imagined it would be rosy with happiness but it was the opposite. She rushed to her mother's side and sobbed harder. She cursed the day she met Kingston. She cursed the day she fell in love with him. She cursed the day he proposed to her which were all a fake. She cursed his existence. She was sure that they would not be on their way driving to the church if there was no wedding and no accident would occur. She blamed Kingston and her sister for all these mess.

Just as the nurses covered her father's face and was about to do the same to her mother, the ECG monitor suddenly beeped. She stiffened. Her tears stilled. The nurses and doctors stood on their spot with just one thought in their mind. Did… the monitor just beep?
