Chapter 4 - Home, part 2

I have to enjoy this princess treatment because I know that it will not last. I will take over the home the following day and run for the next five months. This is a reason I do not like coming home for the holidays.

" Wake up it is seven already, I am off to work." My mom knocks rapidly on my door.

" Okay I will be up in a minute"

I have to wake up early because there are cows to be milked. I have to clean the houses and do all chores. My mother does not usually do the laundry when she knows that I will be coming home soon. I have to do the washing first so that I would catch up with the latest juicy gossip.

" Hey, when did you get home," I can recognize that hoarse voice even without looking up. That is Ben our herdsman.

" I just got home,"

" You are glowing, you should just get a job and a husband in that big town," he teases

" Well if I get a chance I won't hesitate to grab it."

" The tea is ready, it will really help with this cold."

We both sit down to take tea with some left over coookies and Ben is mesmerized. He has never eaten cookies and he keeps briefing about the village. This girl, the other darker one fled away grom school, about the girls who got pregnant and who are allegedly responsible, who is committing adultery with you, in this village you affair is everyone's affair as well.

" Thanks for the tea and I hope you will buy this sweet biscuits again. I will be back shortly to feed the cows, let me run some errand for my wife."

I try persuading him to feed the cows before leaving but he insists that he will be back shortly.

I count that as an added chore to my already many chores because for the next five months other than the holiday breaks for the high schools I will have to feed the cows as well.

I can never get a break. Feeding the cows is the hardest job and I hate it with passion. It leaves my hands with scales and I am even gaining muscles with cutting and ferrying the grass and other animal feeds. I put back the flask and scamper to the farm before the sun is too hot. I am just dressed like an.old woman. Nappier grass usually leaves cuts on the skin and I do not want cuts on my skin.

It is already noon and I still need to do some laundry. Am so tired and bored because it has been quite sometime and I have to adjust to this manual work.
