'They say your life flashes when you are going to die. That must be true since I am seeing everything that happened in my life right now. It was both a good and unfortunate life for her' Audrey couldn't see anything surrounding her but her memories of how she lived her life all this time, kept playing inside her mind. Other than that, everything was blurry in her surroundings.
'It hurts too much. When will this be over?' Excruciating pain covered her entire body like she was being torn apart in a slow and agonizing matter.
She wanted to give up already. To finally have a rest in this tiring world. However, there was someone shouting, shouting at her to keep on pushing.
"Push!"
"You can do this! For your baby!"
"Push more and don't give up!"
The voices were unfamiliar to her, but this strangely gave her more will to persevere.
'That is right. For my baby, I must hold on for my baby.' Audrey continued to scream in pain. "Ahhh!"
'I can't let it end like this…' She continued to scream even more. 'I must hold on until my baby can see this world.'
They finally made it to the hospital and she was immediately rushed to the Surgery Room.
Doctors covered in white surgical gowns and nurses assisting the doctors were trying their best to save Audrey and her baby.
Outside the Surgery Room, Vonny, Audrey's boss, was walking back and forth, seemingly listless. She kept biting on her right thumbnail and then glancing at the Surgery Room door from time to time.
'She will be fine right? Please let her be fine.' Her worry only continued to grow as time passed.
"Vonny!"
Vonny turned around when someone called her all of the sudden. It was no other than Donna, Audrey's older sister by three years.
"Where is Audrey?" Visible fear and worry were plastered on her face.
"Sh--She is in the Surgery Room right now," Vonny said with a trembling voice. 'To think that I am trembling this much.' She took deep breaths to calm herself, but no matter what she did, her nerves could never stay calm.
"Please take a seat. You are trembling too much." Donna gestured to the bench outside the Emergency Room. She assisted Vonny to sit. But as soon as Donna touched her, Vonny could also feel that Donna was also trembling.
Who wouldn't worry in this kind of situation? When a friend and a sister were in critical condition? They sat at the bench in silence, praying with their hearts that both Audrey and her baby would survive this critical moment.
Donna clenched her fist. When she received the call from Indra that her sister was rushed to the hospital, she tried calling John, Audrey's husband. 'However, that bastard had not even answered her calls nor seen any of her messages.'
'My sister doesn't deserve to be treated like this. I swear…' She clenched her teeth. 'Once Audrey finished her delivery, I will not let that bastard get near my sister and her child. So please…" She clasped both her hands and looked downwards. "Please Audrey, you and your child must survive no matter what."
They waited for three more hours like that until the red light in the Emergency Room went off. Followed by that was the sound of a baby crying as the door opened. Both Vonny and Donna looked at each other.
'This!' Excitement filled their eyes. 'It's a success!'
Both of them stood up as the doctor came out of the Emergency room. However, seeing the serious look of the doctor, their excitement was immediately washed away. Donna and Vonny looked at each other with worry, before approaching the doctor.
"Doctor, what's the problem?" Donna asked anxiously.
"What is your relation to the patient?" The doctor asked.
"I am her elder sister," Donna answered.
"I have two pieces of news for you. One is bad news and the other one is good news. What do you want to hear first?" The doctor asked once again.
Donna narrowed her gaze, from the tone of the doctor, sounded very heavy, "The good news."
"Your sister gave birth successfully to a boy. However, since the baby came out prematurely, he will be put in incubation until he develops more and will be monitored regularly in the hospital. But you don't have to worry, aside from that, the baby is pretty healthy and once the incubation period is over, you can carry him in your own hands."
"Th--thank goodness," Donna said. Both she and Vonny felt like one huge thorn was being plucked out from their chest.
"Then what is the bad news?"
At the question of Vonny, Donna remembered that there was still bad news that the doctor had not said. This time a dread much heavier than before crept inside her heart.
"My sister, she is alright, right? She survives, right?" Donna asked as she looked at the doctor with a hopeful gaze. However, instead of a brighter expression from the doctor, he shook his head.
"I am sorry, your sister lost too much blood, the moment the baby was delivered, she died."
Vonny, hearing the doctor's word dropped to the ground, her eyes widened, and couldn't believe what she just heard. While Donna looked at the doctor.
"I must have heard wrong," She was in denial, "If she loses too much blood, then I can just transfuse blood to her! We have the same blood type!"
"I'm sorry," the doctor said once again, "There was nothing we could do anymore."
"No, you are lying!" Donna shoved the doctor and ran toward the Emergency Room. There she saw the nurses covering Audrey's body already. That was when it finally sank into her.
She walked toward Audrey as tears finally streamed down her face, "No, Audrey. My dear sister," She dropped to the side of her bed, "How can you leave us like this?" she sobbed as she buried her head on the side of Audrey's body that was getting colder as the time passed.
