[ Jacob knows something… ]
Old Yu had the right point that even the usually shrewd Alice realized it too late. Jacob suddenly helped her from Vincent, could it be for no reason?
Jacob, who is actually a foreigner, believes that Alice is innocent of Renésmee's disappearance? Maybe he did know something, maybe he had evidence or something relevant that he believed Alice.
But instead of answering, Jacob refuted Old Yu's accusations and confused people. Jacob said, "You think I could do anything bad to Nessy?"
Huh. Though Alice wished Jacob had something for her.
"Did I say you did something bad? I'm asking if you know something or not, whether it's good or bad. You should know better how Renésmee's condition is right now, you can feel it, you're connected to her but you're here and defending a foreign woman."
Old Yu only represented everyone's thoughts.
Jacob's behavior was strange and unreasonable. It's only natural for someone to question it.
"Or… did you see anything in Alice?"
The chances are almost nil but who knows right?
"Tch! Look how ridiculous this is now. If I could see anything in other women then I would have left this pack a long time ago."
What Old Yu did was sprinkle salt on Jacob's wound, even though he didn't mean to. "Jacob… we also hope you can find someone other than Renesmee."
"Yeah and your hopes don't help me at all. Thank you very much. If all you want to do is force Alice to admit something then stop. I'm willing to vouch for her that she's innocent. So you can stop judging her like this."
Jacob led Alice away from Old Yu's room, led her down the winding hallway and suddenly they were in the library.
Alice didn't pay attention, she thought about the argument between Jacob and Old Yu all the way. She still didn't know why Jacob had helped her and asking that now seemed a little too rude. Jacob had helped her a lot, questioning his kindness now, wasn't that a bit harsh?
"Thank you," said Alice. She didn't know what to say and thank you was the word she hadn't said to Jacob. "Thank you for everything, thank you for believing in me and protecting me."
Oh, by the way yesterday Jacob got hurt protecting her. Alice glanced at Jacob who looked fit. There was no trace of bruises or cuts on his face.
[ Has it all healed? ]
Even though Jacob looked bad and lousy yesterday. Vincent beat him to death. Normally it takes a few days for the bruise to heal and about a week for it to heal or it could take longer.
"Is your body okay?"
"Me? I'm fine. That bastard didn't even break a single bone of mine. We werewolves have a good immune system. The wound like yesterday was nothing. Thank you for worrying about me."
[ Uh? Should Vincent fractured some of his bone so it called something? ]
"You don't need to thank me. My worries are of no use or help to you, as you said to your senior."
Opps… why did Alice bring it up like that.
"Sorry, I—"
"It's okay," he said so, but Jacob took his eyes off Alice and stared far away. He was clearly lying.
"Don't compare yourself to them. I know you're being sincere and I really appreciate it."
Jacob said again, "By the way, you can take off the robe now. Vincent isn't around and no one else will be coming to the library."
"Oh really?" Vincent and his friends were away. They couldn't possibly know that she took off her robes with Jacob. "Will my scent not bother you?"
"How bad does your body smell anyway? I think it will get worse when you sweat. It's already summer now. The weather has warmed up. Don't you feel hot?" Jacob went to open the window.
Alice listened to Jacob's suggestion. Ah… it felt better when Alice took off the fur robe.
The cool smell of Alice's pheromones made Jacob turn to her. Vincent may be right, this woman's scent is unique, like Renesmee… even more Alice smells nice like snow. No wonder Vincent was annoyed.
"Does my body smell all the way up there?" Alice happened to see Jacob's nose twitch.
"Yes, but take it easy. You don't smell bad, it just smells like the scent of snow."
Alice had heard it from Noah before. If it's true that her scent smells like snow, what's the problem? "Don't werewolves like snow?" she asked.
"Why do you ask that?"
"Vincent doesn't like my smell and it seems the others do too."
"We love snow, winter scents are the best. It was the greatest season for us. Women usually smell better than usual, those who already have partners will mating with their partners and we—"
"Wait a minute." Alice prevented Jacob from explaining further.
Duh what an explanation!
It means Alice does smell like women enticing men in their mating season?
Is that what made Noah stick to her?
Alice glanced at Jacob who was smiling stupidly like someone who had been enchanted or so because of her smell? Should she put her robe back on?
Jacob started laughing at Alice as she touched her fur robe, "sorry, sorry, that's not what I meant. You smell good but it's not like that. I was just trying to make a joke with you. I'm not meaning to tease you like this, I just wanted us to talk more casually. You know…"
"Is that true?" Alice's hand left her robe. Remind Alice to ask someone about her body smell later.
Jacob pulled a large book from the shelf and invited Alice to sit beside him. Alice hesitantly approached and looked into the book Jacob had opened.
Alice's curiosity was piqued when she looked inside the book. Strange characters continued to form writing. At first it seems strange but it all looks beautiful because they are strung together.
"What does this text mean?" Alice pointed at the title line of the page.
Written over there:
[ Μεγάλη Ιστορία της Εδέμ ]
Which means the Great History of Eden.
"You can't read this?"
Alice shook her head. The evidence that she was not part of the Land of Eden grew stronger. Yet they can still speak to each other in the same language. Where did she actually come from?
Jacob swallowed his curiosity. That problem can still be put aside for later. He started by teaching Alice the basic letters so that Alice could read and write. He also explains further how life in Seth Valley is and how the werewolves operate.
So the following days Alice and Jacob would go to the library to study.
Alice was still wearing her fur coat when she came out of her room or while she was eating with the rest of the pack, she would only take off her fur robe when she studied in the library with Jacob.
Summer days are passing meaningfully. It took a month for Alice to begin to understand the sentences in the book and began to read the historical records of the Land of Eden.
"Great! You learn fast." Jacob complimented Alice after she managed to read a page of the book without looking at her notes.
"Yes, thanks to your help." Alice smiled brightly because she felt happy to have learned new things with Jacob.
Alice's smile was too bright for Jacob to stare pensively at her. Unexpectedly she looked very beautiful. Jacob couldn't even remember the last time he'd called someone beautiful. It seemed that only Renésmee could be called a beautiful woman.
Jacob looked at his left hand which was on the table. The imprints were still there but he couldn't feel anything. His heart has been empty since Renésmee disappeared.
[ Nessy, where are you now? ]
"Jacob!" It's not Alice. The call came with the sound of the door opening violently.
