"Wake up Gina, you need to get out of bed today." Tess, my good friend says to me.
I groan out loud, covering my face with the covers as she opens the curtains to let the sun in.
"Yeah, that is not the plan for today," I say and she forcefully pulls the covers off the bed.
"I got a job in a new city and I am leaving today." She says to me and I immediately sit up to look at her.
"You are leaving me too?" I ask Tess.
"Absolutely not. I am taking you with me. You don't have any family, Marcus was the only family you had and he's gone. I will not let my friend raise a child alone. Come on, I have already packed your bags and loaded them in the car, to the airport!" She drags me out of bed and I follow her into the bathroom, where a warm bath was waiting for me.
Tears well up in my eyes, the things Tess has done for me since losing Marcus... She has been my rock, my punching bag, and my crying pillow.
"Don't get all emotional on me now. It's a good thing you don't have a job. Would be weird having to explain why you can't make it to your job anymore." Tess says and I smile.
I slowly undress, my lack of energy was due to the night I have spent crying instead of sleeping and only managing to sleep when the sun rises.
Tess leaves me to bathe and I close my eyes to allow myself to relax, but that does not happen and instead, I am met with the sight of my best friend kissing my boyfriend.
Jessica had told us about her secret boyfriend and he wanted to stay private, that he would one day meet us but it was not the time. The time came one Saturday, Jessica called us, sounding so excited that we could finally meet her mystery man. They were having high tea at the famous Old House.
We call it The Old House because that is exactly what it is, an old house. The only standing old house from the 1600s, that has been kept in this town since. It has now turned into a plaza of sorts. Filled with restaurants and boutique shops, and a hotel but the one place that stood out was its dining hall.
It is a magical room that is only ever used for weddings.
A room Marcus and I have talked about endlessly.
When Tess and I walked in, we were met by many familiar faces, old friends, and neighbors. Marcus was right at the altar, kissing my best friend.
Yes, Jessica invited us to meet her husband, my boyfriend at her wedding. Tess took my hand and stormed out of the room, a loud Marcus chasing after us to explain but Tess did not stop to hear him. I could hear him faintly call my name but my feet were moving along, following Tess. I regained my senses once I was in Tess's car and it was driving away, looking out the window was a grinning Jessica and who I thought was mine.
Tess knocks on the door to snap me out of my daydreams, it's a thing now. I wash up and dress up, putting on the dress Tess laid out for me.
"Come on, we need to pass by the doctor's office to finalize a few things and then we can be on our way. I think the change will be good for us." Tess says and I force a smile.
She was right.
It was probably for the better to leave, change my number and never have to hear from Marcus again. Since throwing my phone against the wall a few days ago when Marcus would not stop calling, it has been quiet and I welcome the silence.
I am angry. I am hurt. I am shattered.
My days just go by, I barely notice it go from morning to night. I can only tell when the sun rises because I would still be awake, trying then to fall asleep.
We make it to the doctor's office and I get my vitamins and my file for the pregnancy and we leave.
It was time to start afresh. To try again, for the sake of the baby growing inside of me.
