Chapter 4. The Sky

" - Let's experiment, throw a god into a black hole, what happens to him?

- The death of the experimenter will happen." - Alexander Rudazov

*****

The first thing he saw when he opened his eyes was the white ceiling. The whitewashed walls, the unhurried footsteps in the corridor, the dim light, and the smell. Ooh... the smell of medicine, disease, and chlorine, the doctor's face flashed in his mind. Trying to lift his head, he immediately lowered it. His head rattled like the worst booze and his body ached as if he had first fought to the death with a mad god and then been beaten to a pulp... Oh, yeah, that's right.

- You're pretty banged up, you want a drag? For medicinal purposes only, of course. - Lucy's voice came through. The cat was sitting on the nightstand to the side of his bunk, smoking something.

- What is that? And what the hell are you smoking anyway, if someone comes in and smells it, what will they think?

- It's marijuana, I got it from a doctor here. I don't exist in this world in the usual way, so I can only interact with it within certain limits, so no one but you can smell this heavenly scent.

It's an interesting subject, about Lucy's existence, of course, not about the miracle herb. He would have continued to question him, but a nurse came into his room, followed by a black-haired man dressed in a black coat, and there he was, smelling of cigarettes.

- You're awake! It's amazing, you were brought in such a bad condition, but it's only been two days and you're already awake. - This nurse is quite talkative.

While she chatted about how bad his condition was and what a horrible disaster it was, she checked his IV, gave him some painkillers, and then asked him how he was feeling. All this time the man in black stood in the corner of the room and silently watched the white-haired man.

- All right, the patient has recovered and I don't see any abnormalities. I will leave you alone, please sir don't be too long, the boy still needs rest. - Then she left the room, and there was an awkward silence between the protagonist and the man.

- Um... My name is Emiya Kiritsugu. I am the one who saved you. - Emiya Kiritsugu is clearly not used to dealing with children. - Do you remember your name, boy?

- I guess after the fire, my past name doesn't matter anymore. - The answer sounded weak and quiet.

I agree that for the first words from a child, it sounds too pathetic, but not to tell him his old name, which if no one recognizes, will cause questions about who he is in general, and given that this is a magical world, it would not be strange if the knowledgeable people think that our protagonist is very suspicious.

- Um... Okay, I'm not sure if you remember what happened to you, but I'll let you in on the truth. I'm a magician, and before this... before the fire, my life was filled with various, so to speak, magical dangers. Now, I think I'm going to retire and buy a house in this town and settle down here. I asked around about you, because of the fire there are a lot of people who lost their home and family. You belong to the group that lost all of the above. So how about I adopt you? - Kiritsugu said all that in an even tone.

This man certainly doesn't know how to communicate with children, any child would be hysterical upon hearing that they have no parents and no home. But on the other hand Kiritsugu is a mage, and judging by his dead eyes and emotionless face, a mage with a bad past, so no wonder he doesn't get along well with simple life.

- Well, if I have no one left in this world, then I will be your new family.

- Have you forgotten me? We've been through so much, and when a strange-looking man comes along and offers you a roof over your head and strange prospects, you immediately forget about my pathetic figure. - But only our Monster Hunter reacted to Lucy's remark, which puzzled him greatly.

- If that's the case, you need a name, how about Sora. It means sky in Japanese. - Unlike his terrible communication skills, Kiritsugu had good naming skills.

- I like it. And Master Mage, will you teach me magic? - Sora asked deski.

He accepted his offer for the most part because if Kiritsugu was a Mage, he could probably teach it to him.

- No," was the short and succinct reply.

But that was to be expected from someone like Kiritsugu. His aura suggests that he is a loner to the core, and here Sora has fallen upon him. Though perhaps he cares so much for the boy, thinking that all the sorrows in his life are from magic and if the child doesn't know it, he won't come face to face with such a horrible world. Or maybe he just thinks it's a childish whim, not a serious request, and magic is a dangerous thing for sure. Or maybe he's a bad magician. Or maybe all at once?

- Well, you rest, and I'll go and take care of things. - After these words Kiritsugu left the room.

And Sora turned his gaze out the window, where the yellow sun was finally shining and a clear, blue sky spread out. But in the blink of an eye, his head buzzed. A tremendous amount of information was constantly flowing into his brain. [The method of solving all equations] the ability itself is already the initial stage of the Triad of Omnipotence, which implies a strain on its user, and he is also a child. It is fortunate that Sora will use only a portion of this ability, called the Eyes of Knowledge. These eyes will allow you to instantly understand the nature of all the things the wearer's gaze falls upon, but on the other hand it is unlucky that it is a passive effect.

Although, thanks to Synergy, his brain will develop much faster and better than that of ordinary people, so sooner or later he will surely get used to such loads.

The catastrophe was eventually attributed to a gas leak, a magician must have done his best, because it would be impossible to explain the hell that was going on there by a simple gas leak without a miracle, without magic.

A couple of days later, Kiritsugu picked Soru up from the hospital and brought him to his new home. All the way, Kiritsugu gave Soru a strange look because he was walking with his eyes closed while holding his hand, but writing it off as unwillingness to look at the city and remember the hell the child had gone through, he pushed it off to the back of his head.

Their new house looked like a traditional Japanese-style homestead, as Kiritsugu described it. Inside was a spacious courtyard, and in the corner was a barn. There were quite a few rooms in the house, of which Soru was most interested in the dojo and the basement room, which was fortified with magical inscriptions.

The house itself and the area around it were surrounded by a magical barrier. Kiritsugu was surprised to learn that Sora could see it and explained that Mages could sense the barrier, but could not see it.

Living with Kiritsugu, you could tell that any other kid in Sora's shoes would have just starved to death. The man didn't cook at all, and when he tried, it turned into a strange black slurry that gave off miasmas, how such a thing could be cooked is still a mystery.

About eating. Because Sora needed to develop his brain quickly, he started to eat a lot of sweets, and thanks to Synergy, he increased the efficiency and speed of monosaccharide absorption, which contributed to his pumping.

In addition, he discovered the most real magic in a world without magic. So much information, and for a "bookworm" like him, it was heaven. Starting with simple cooking recipes, Sora moved on to more interesting information. Studying the geography and history of this world was particularly fascinating, after so many years in Terraria such a variety of cultures, legends and myths was astounding. Afterwards, he discovered science and it was easy... easy, thanks to Synergy, which permanently improved his brain, and the [All Equation Solving Method], which buffaloed him even more, he learned biology, chemistry and physics quite easily, and math was a breeze.

Another discovery was the martial arts in this world. In Terraria Sora fought in a way that would kill a monster and not die himself, no special techniques, in addition a huge help were artifacts, not to lie, saying that without them he would not have survived.

And so the martial arts, at a glance he knew they would be useful, for controlling strength, accuracy of movement, and using the enemy's power against him, all of these were incredibly important in combat. So he began to learn them from videos, again thanks to being the main character, Sora quickly memorized the stances and punching techniques, all that was left was to practice them. That's what he did at his home dojo. Boxing, Aikido, Taekwondo, Muay Thai, and bow-wielding Kyudo and sword-wielding Kendo.

Of course, Sora did not become a master at anything, but he still acquired the basic skills, moreover, in only six months. And when he was seven and a half, he already spoke several languages, knew various sciences at high school level, and had a set of apprenticeship in martial arts.

Does that prove he was a genius? Well, Lucy didn't think so, though listening to a cat with a terrible hangover from an even worse drinking binge and lying in a puddle of his own vomit is a crappy business. At least he's the main character.

Anyway, somehow that's how his life in this world began.
