Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 3

"Why do you think you are capable of this?" Erik asked Matt, changing his informal personality to his official one.

"I studied science, precisely, I studied flowers in school. I believe I would be the best help you could need in the flower deterioration case," Matt answered.

"Hmm."

After a series of questions, Mr. Erik finalized his decision.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Matt but you don't get the job, but," he paused then continued, "you can accompany us on the journey, not as a full employee though, but we will consider you once the journey is over."

"Meaning?" Matt raised an eyebrow.

"If you prove to be someone worth keeping, you will get the job."

"Thank you."

Mr. Erik held up an eyebrow as if to say, 'is that all?'

"Boss." Matt added.

"Researching starts tomorrow." Erik informs Matt.

Local Garden

"Okay, get a sample of the toxin so that we can study it." Erik commanded.

"Okay sir!" The scientists reported.

"So, Matt, notice anything strange here?" Erik inquired, pointing towards a flower with green leaves and white petals.

"Hmm, like what?"

"Well, I've never seen this type of flower before and I'm guessing you know something."

"Oh, that, this type of flower is rare and it's actually pretty strong. This toxin is malignant."

As Erik used his syringe to take a sample, a scientist suddenly exclaimed, "Sir, you will not believe this!"

Turning over, he asked, "What?" raising an eyebrow.

"We need to go back to the agency to study it more."

"So you're telling me that you're not confident about whatever you found. If we go back to the agency and the information you found is useless," he paused then he proceeded with a glum look, "you'll be sacked and I will file a report to all science agencies saying that you frittered every single person's time."

Hearing that, the scientist felt chills down his spine.

"Erik sir, that was too harsh." Matt said.

"Matt, you can't teach me how to do my job. There are two types of attitude. Work attitude and informal attitude. As a leader, you can't use your informal attitude or else you wish for disrespect from your followers." Erik lectured.

"Sir, I insist." The scientist persisted.

"Oh really?" Erik raised an eyebrow, "Do keep in mind that your career is on the line." He warned.

The scientist shook his head.

"Off we go."

. . .

"Okay, so what exactly did you find?"

"Sir, this particular chemical is produced by the Dark Laboratories. It consists of three deadly chemicals mixed together under an extremely strong chemical reaction causing the nutrient in flowers to slowly die. It is also a poison, meaning that it may appear safe on the outside for a short period of time. Bees will take pollen and nectar, and this pollen and nectar are poisoned, the bees that take this will die. The fruits or leaves it produces may look healthy but it is not safe. My information can also be used to track down the perpetrators of this crime."

"Perpetrators? What makes you so sure that it isn't one person that did this?"

"Gut feeling, sir."

"Okay, good information. Our next phase of this mission is finding a solution. Believe me, it won't be as easy as the first step. Once I inform Lucas, he will tell us what to do next," as he changed into his informal attitude, he then lifted an arm and cried out, "The power of science shall fix the world!"

"The power of science shall fix the world!" The scientists repeated.

'Jubilation shall come them sorrow right after. Were the humans slowly reaching a solution?'
